New York would be incredibly short-sighted to fire Cashman if the season ended in disappointment. I hate the Yankees, but the dude’s a front office wizard

You’d be a wizard too, if you were able to basically not worry about spending restrictions. When you can trade a guy like Chapman at the deadline- knowing you have no doubt about outbidding everyone else, to resign him. Well, that’s quite an advantage.
Add assuming a contract like Stanton’s, or taking on ‘extra’ players like LeMahieu – because you have the money. Doesn’t take a genius to succeed.
Now, compare that, to how the GM’s at Tampa Bay have to operate.

DJL wasn’t a ‘flex our cash’ signing

You still habe to win. And look at all the young talent in New York. He’s been able to wheel and deal to get younger and remain competitive. He’s not getting fired any time soon.

I’m not saying he has it as difficult as small market teams, but he’s still a respectable manager and makes some savvy trades regardless. The Chapman trade gave them Torres, LeMahieu was found at a bargain price, and he built a pretty good bullpen with Ottavino, Britton, Green, and Kahnle. The Stanton trade is a blackeye, but every manager has their mistakes

He has only 1 w.s. under his belt since gene Michael and bob Watson handed over the reins to him( about 15-20 yrs ago, and the w.s. was because he spent millions and millions, plus a-roid was jacked out of his mind in 2009..the 96,98,99,00 teams were built by the above mentioned and radomski and friends

The Dodgers haven’t won under Friedman and he’s considered a top-5 GM. I’m not saying Cashman is flawless, but to suggest he needs to be replaced is typical New York overreaction

I even remember in the mid-2010’s when they were weighed down by big contracts and a shallow farm system, they still produced winning seasons. Even in 2016 when they were “sellers” at the deadline, they managed to win 84 games.
There’s also the fact that teams like the Yankees typically have owner mandates to spend money. What Cashman has done well is adjusted as baseball has advanced into analytics and sabermetrics.
Not to mention the most impressive caveat of all: He’s survived and been pretty successful in the toughest market of them all for over two decades. You can fire him, but there’s no guarantee the next guy would survive in the Bronx.
All that being said, I think Cashman is an excellent GM and he’ll leave the Yankees when he retires.

Mark must be from the burbs. Visit NYC in the summer and you’ll understand why hot garbage is worse than cold garbage.

More energy—->more decomposition of waste. Not even to mention the confident NYC rats.

Good to read Mark mentioning both the time batters take stepping out of the box and pitchers stepping off between pitches as simple ways to speed up the game. Pitchers stepping off or having a slow pace is often cited; it seems like hitters stepping out of the box between pitches has become problematic.
Gwynning
Agreed. If you need to adjust your equipment between every pitch, then remove the daggum equipment. Pitchers and batters should be ready to go. Let’s roll, giddyup meow! Here’s hoping the high strike will be consistently called as well. A truer implementation of the strike zone will help to speed up games!

Has it ever happened that through 3 games of the season, every team is either 2 and 1 or 1 and 2?
