2:05pm: The results were not concerning, a source tells MLB.com’s Anthony DiComo (via Twitter). That’s obviously great news for the Mets.
12:22pm: The Mets have decided to send top starter Jacob deGrom in for an MRI on his ailing back, manager Luis Rojas told reporters including Newsday’s Tim Britton (Twitter link). deGrom left his Summer Camp appearance yesterday after a single inning.
There’s still no reason for serious alarm, to be clear. But it’s hardly the best news to follow up on yesterday’s development. Sending deGrom in for imaging does indicate that the organization has concern beyond the level of regular maintenance.
If all goes well and the MRI reveals minimal damage, perhaps there’s still a shot for deGrom to resume his march towards Opening Day. But even the missed build-up opportunity represents a threat given the shortened second training period we’re in. And the Mets will obviously want to exercise ample caution with their best player.
JerryBird
They will still “give” him the Cy Young no matter what he does. Scherzer and Ryu got robbed the past two seasons. Wonder who will get robbed this year.
metsfan68
Give him? ,so a guy with an e.r.a. in the unconscious zone with no run support didnt deserve them? Wasnt ryu lit up like an irish guy on st Patrick’s day after the a.s. break? Scherzer i will look up.
Halo11Fan
I’m with you. deGrom earned it. And that’s not even taking into account the Mets defense, which is flat out bad.
bobtillman
Excellent under appreciated point

@halo
Hence why their pitching staffs never lived up to their full potential

JerryBird you are an AHole and Metsfan68 you are a bigot.

Lol good one
newpony13
Scherzer’s numbers don’t even come close to deGrom and Ryu. Ryu lost his mojo in the second half unfortunately. deGrom earned it the last two years so idk what nonsense you’re on m8.
Smooches :*
SoxRewl
Sure, I would have voted for Scherzer last year if I had the vote…but to say DeGrom wasn’t deserving is folly. Some years there are more than one great season from a pitcher.
Ironman_4life
I agree totally. There both cy young worthy pitchers. But in a 1 game losers goes home im puttin my money on Max.
Halo11Fan
I’m putting my money on the better team.
Scherzer has been far from a lock in the post season. Jacob deGrom in his limited capacity, has been better.
kodion
JerryBird
What is your “definition” of ACE?
DarkSide830
youre a fool if you think he didnt deserve to win in 2018 at least, and 2019 he was very deserving as well
LongTimeFan1
@jerryBird –
That’s just nonsense. Degrom out pitched both, both seasons, deserved the CY Young both seasons.
rct
Is your argument here that, for some reason, Cy Young voters are biased against Max Scherzer and Ryu in favor of a Met? Is this based on anything at all?
deGrom, 2018: 1.70 ERA, 217 innings, 269 Ks, league-leading 218 ERA+ and 1.98 FIP, 0.912 whip, 11.2 k/9
Scherzer, 2018: 2.53 ERA, 220 innings, league-leading 300 Ks, 168 ERA+, 2.65 FIP, league-leading 0.911 whip and 12.2 k/9
There’s an argument to be made for Scherzer, but to say that he was ‘robbed’, when deGrom was a slightly better pitcher, is not correct. The only thing Scherzer was measurably better at was Ks, but deGrom’s ERA+ and FIP were much better than Scherzer’s.
LongTimeFan1
@rct
Degrom’s 2018, was also historic in some of the streaks he amassed.
metsfan68
Someone will check me but wasnt degron on the d.l. too in 2018? Missed 1 or 2 starts.theres maybe 20 more k’s
bklynny67
Love clueless people. It wasn’t even close the last two years. What stat do u look at? Probably wins… LOL

Lol get outta here with your nonsense… Jake is the best pitcher on baseball. Period
1.70 ERA 2 Years ago is a fluke? Mets hater
carlos15
Ryu and Scherzer either didn’t have the innings or the consistency of performance. 2 years ago wasn’t ever close so that comment makes no sense on the face of it. Last year was close but Ryu had a bad second half and didn’t throw enough innings, he averaged less than 6 innings per start and Scherzer missed too much time. Same reason Kershaw didn’t get it in the past when he was much better than Scherzer. Verlander shouldn’t have gotten it, Cole was better.
VonPurpleHayes
You could argue Ryu, and he would’ve gotten my vote, but to say DeGrom didn’t deserve it is silly.
phattboy4 2
Scherzer was awful the first 1-2 months of the season. Degrom was great all year
neverender82
actually, Jakes opening to the season wasn’t pretty at all. in fact that was part of what earned it for him. How much insanely better he was the rest of the season.
neverender82
thats incorrect. look at how bad Jacob started the season and then how he dominated the rest of the year
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
Considering it’s not the first time he’s had back problems, I would have thought it would be SOP to get him checked out as thoroughly as possible.
Bill M
That makes too much sense. Your comment doesn’t meet the posting requirements for this thread. Good day to you, sir!
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
Aw, jeez, I spit my coffee laughing at this one…
LongTimeFan1
@HubcapDiamondStarHalo –
Degrom hasn’t had any concerning prior back problems.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
Granted it was just listed as “tightness,” but he did miss his Opening Day start in 2018 due to a back issue. I’m certainly of the opinion that, concerning back problems, you can never be too careful.
Mrtwotone
As much as I hate having to face him I hope he is ok. Always fun to watch
Gwynn4TheWin(field)
That means you’re a decent person that doesn’t wish harm on someone just because they wear a different uniform. Good on you. It boggles my mind when people are happy that a player on a rival team gets injured because it helps their teams chances. Like yeah you don’t have to deal with them, but they’re a person man. You’re happy they got hurt?? Come on SMDH
Halo11Fan
If an Astro goes down, I’m not going to shed a tear.
If a PED user pulls a muscle, I’ll smile.
I’m a big fan of Karmic Justice, not that such justice applied to deGrom.
DarkSide830
agreed. amazing talent, a guy you love to see have pitched in the last game before the 4 game set your about to face the Mets for.
metsfan68
I checked the stats, degrom pitched more innings and a ton more k’s, he deserved it over ryu…e.r.a 2.42 to 2.32 or close to that in ryus favor
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I’d have understood Ryu getting it last year. He had a better ERA+ (179 to 167), though slightly worse FIP and WHIP numbers. I think it would have been a razor-thin margin if he’d managed to get 200 innings. He had a hell of a season.
In 2018, definite edge to DeGrom, but Scherzer had one of the best seasons I can remember for a guy who didn’t win it.

Please be precautionary

As long as they don’t use the Carl Pavano MRI machine!

Please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please please… Dear god no! NO NO NO… AAAHHHH
Come on Mets… why did you make Degrom carry the team on his back?
echozulu88
Man, Mets fans can’t catch a break
mlbnyyfan
Who cares if DeGrom won the CY Young. Scherzer won the Championship that’s all that really matters. DeGrom I’m sure would trade all his awards for one Championship.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
@mlbnyyfan, Probably so, but you have a lot more control over individual awards than over winning titles. DeGrom could have gone elsewhere, but he decided to sign an extension with the Mets. Either he’s higher on their chances than the average baseball fan or some things are more important to him than even titles.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Not a Mets fan, but this really sucks for them if it’s serious. No realistic shot at the playoffs if he goes down. Yeah, they have Alonso and Thor, but those two won’t push them by the Nats and Braves.
MikeyHammer
Thor is out. Looking more like Stroman, Matz, Porcello, Wacha.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Did not know that. The rest of the rotation is ok, but it’s not exactly going to strike fear into the hearts of opponents.
The Human Rain Delay
Thor had Tj in march
hyraxwithaflamethrower
Yeah, I saw that after Mikey’s comment. Must have somehow missed it when it happened a few months back or just totally forgot about it somehow. Hopefully, DeGrom’s injury is nothing and they can at least have a shot at the playoffs. I’d love a good 3-team race in the NL East.
brucenewton
Mets will just push his next start back worst case. They’ve never been too concerned with pitchers dealing with pain. Good bet deGrom doesn’t finish the season.
