Royals outfielder Hunter Dozier will open the season on the coronavirus-specific injured list. The club announced that he has tested positive for COVID-19.
This is obviously quite disappointing (and rather worrisome) news to receive, particularly on the eve of Opening Day. Dozier will be sidelined until he’s able to clear the virus from his system and register two positive tests. He says he is experiencing some symptoms. Hopefully, he’s able to make a swift and full recovery.
It’s concerning also that Dozier has been active with his teammates this week. He has obviously been isolated since receiving the test results, but it’s hypothetically possible he could’ve transmitted the virus to others in the organization before that time. It isn’t yet known if any other personnel came into such close contact with Dozier that isolation will be required.
Dozier, who’ll soon turn 29, entered 2020 hoping to build on a breakout effort last year. The first-round pick finally made good on his original promise, turning in a .279/.348/.522 batting line with 26 home runs and a league-leading ten triples over 586 plate appearances. While he benefited from a lofty .339 BABIP, Dozier backed it up with excellent exit velocity and sprint speed.
The news will dent Dozier’s earning abilities after the season, when he’ll qualify for arbitration for the first time. And it’ll hurt the Royals’ hopes for a surprise run in 2020. The added opportunity will open the door for a variety of other players for at least a few weeks. The newly acquired Franchy Cordero should be in line for significant action, with players such as Bubba Starling and Brett Phillips perhaps also seeing increased chances.

2 Negative Test!!

There goes the Royals as World Series favorites in this short 60 game season.
DarkSide830
well rip to that guy who thought the Franchy trade would allow them to contend
Halo11Fan
He obviously didn’t catch this from his teammates. I realize it’s hard, but all you have to do is isolate for two months.
The players at this point have to take some responsibility.
Hopefully he didn’t spread it to any of his teammates.
ba2929
Lol like 5 guys on the team have just recently tested positive so I’m not sure how you can say he “obviously” didn’t get it from his teammates.
Halo11Fan
On KC? Who are the five guys that just tested positive.
Anyway, the point stands, he got it from someone.
kcfan76
Since summer camp started Junis, Salvy, O’Hearn, Keller, Gallagher, and Dino have all had positive tests. Viloria is out with an “undisclosed illness”.

OK, then Jakob Junis.
It starts somewhere. Someone isn’t isolating. It’s selfish. At some-point, player zero, has to take responsibility.

He has a back injury, small brain person

Well if the Royals weren’t out before…
I like Hunter, and it’s a shame to see him get knocked out right before the season. These younger players deserve the chances they get to help their team right out of the gate, but now he’s gonna miss most of that opening day feeling. I hope he gets better.
Side note: So about 4 days ago I was starting to feel the left side of my throat swell up. Then about two days ago, my brother told me I have sick breath. I brush my teeth religiously each day, so it’s not like my teeth are rotting. So I have been taking even more precautions around people, and trying to keep my family from getting whatever it is. I’m not saying it’s corona, but this is the most mild sickness I’ve ever had (whatever it is). I still feel relatively fine, but I also know that I have sick breath.
Lastly, I don’t get sick that often. Maybe once every two years, because it’s not like I’m out licking people’s faces at the store lol. I’ve rambled, but I just wanted to share my experience.
bobtillman
So you think licking people’s faces is a bad thing?
Halo11Fan
bobtillman. It depends on the face.
ScottCFA
Ranger, you might want to get tested on the basis of your symptoms.
bravesfan
His name always messing with me. I keep think of the twins old 2nd basemen… such an uncommon name

Like it or not we’re going to have to get used to incidents like this. From Mookie Betts to Hunter Dozier to Rob Refsnyder. It’s going to be a season-long occurrence.

It is what it is, we will see over the next few days, whether he transferred it to others and how many if he did. Regardless, this is why they have the testing and also the expanded rosters. I wonder when the last time he played was.

There is both good news & bad news wrt the science of COVID19. The good news is that the vast majority of us will suffer a low viral load & not infect any one as long as we practice sound social distancing (distance, mask, hygiene).
The team is likely still safe with Dozier infected.
The bad news is those that suffer high viral load potentially can infect everyone they come in contact with that’s not practicing sound social distancing. The science says less than 20% of infected are responsible for over 80% of the cases.
It’s summer so ditch the dark colored masks for lighter more reflective ones.
The worse news is that we can forget immunity certification.
The largest study so far on immunity has found it peaks in the 5th wk of infection
& drops significantly by the 12th wk. This news has caused govt’s worldwide
to pre-order vaccine even before anything’s been proven effective vs a high viral load infection. That’s what’s most important because high viral load infections typically cause a high viral load in the infected regardless of their risk group.
The US has quickly struck a deal with Pfizer for as many as 500M doses of their at present “fantasy” vaccine.
The real threat to live sports then is the presence of high viral load infected.
I can only hope the team doctors are being vigilant. It’s not enough to test for
positivity any more. They must test for high viral load & perform detailed contract
traciing.
Until the science says otherwise the only way ahead is vigilant social distancing measures & vaccinations in at leat Nov & Apr months. If that’s not enough expect
Oct, Feb, & Jun Squeezing in a 4th vaccination every yr is likely too burdensome for people.
Best case scenario: A + test will automatically subject you to comprehensive viral load testing. If that is +, you & everyone you’ve come in contact with will be subject to comprehensive contract tracing. Vaccinations will be mandatory. If you test – for high viral load vaccinations will be optional.
There are reports of some people showing immunity for 6 or more months & in fact
2003 SARS victims appear to be immune vs SARS-V2, but those numbers are no where near large enough to even consider an idea for immunity certification.
I know it seems like we are living in a horror film but the worse may still to come.
America has a stronger, more contagious strain of SARS-V2 than overseas & some scientists are beginning to wonder what it’s impact on influenza might be when both are present in the body. The CDC is now estimating some 40M Americans have likely been infected by SARS-V2 this year & that spread could grow to 60M before
influenza strikes again. The worst case is that the interaction of both viruses in the body at the same time produces a stronger more contagious influenza virus for years to come. Such an event could render flu vaccinations ineffective.
If that’s not enough to churn your stomach, say hello to my little friend: mr mosquito.
With SARS-V2 being able to survive on car hoods for 5d, it’s a sure bet to be transmittable with bites. After every rainfall check for places where standing water collects & drain them. It could be as simple as a patch of uneven ground in your lawn or garden. Rake it or sweep it away if you have too. Don’t risk over-watering.
Better to water light now regardless of the heat.
Regardless of how vigilant we are with masks & such a blood sucker can simply bite a
high load COVID19 person & then bite you & you are likely to become a high load COVID19 persoon too.

Certainly detailed info
Technically correct
@chisoxjuan, I know you are trying to help, but I found several inaccuracies related to the information you shared as facts. However, even if those got cleaned up, your post tries to use science and statistics before being severely undermined by the wild theory about mosquitoes at the end.
I looked for official sources and found that the WHO has definitively stated that coronavirus cannot be transmitted via mosquitoes, while the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention also said it “has no data to suggest” that the coronavirus is spread by mosquitoes or ticks. Even if the mosquito did digest the virus, it would have to survive the digestive process and transfer to the insect’s salivary glands to then infect a human, which sounds pretty complicated. Probably best to omit that theory moving forward.
Now about Uribe…
chisoxjuan
We all learned during the AIDS epidemic that viruses can be transmitted from one human to another via blood suckers. Their digestive process does not happen immediately. It basically happens after the hunt if you willl.
As for the WHO & CDC, both orgs have been consistenty trumped by reports out of Asia.
It was S Korea that debunked the belief that human sweat is not a major factor. They reported the rapid spread of the virus in Yoga classes.
We now know that anything that increases the humidity in the room is a major factor.
That’s why the virus keeps spreading in America where there are locker rooms & other sweaty places. That includes bars & restaurants. The masks themselves can cause people to sweat more & increase humidity.
Social distancing isn’t enough in places where wet air keeps circulating.
The re-opening plans should have kept poorly ventilated places closed.
If a bar or restaurant doesn’t have a patio to serve outside then it should’ve kept
it’s doors wide open & retrofitted or installed big picture windows that can be open wide.
Pretty much anything that quickly moves dirty, wet air out should’ve have been in the planning.
