July 8: The Giants received their test results from Saturday this morning, per a team announcement. All were negative among both players and staff, and workouts will resume today. It’s not clear whether they’ve had an additional wave of results since those now-four-day old tests.
July 7, 2:45pm: The Giants have yet to receive results from Saturday’s batch of tests, manager Gabe Kapler tells reporters (Twitter link via Alex Pavlovic of NBC Sports Bay Area). Their hope is to receive those tests today and return to workouts Wednesday.
2:20pm: The Giants announced Tuesday afternoon that Summer Camp workouts at Oracle Park have been suspended, pending results from this weekend’s wave of COVID-19 testing (Twitter link via Kerry Crowley of the San Jose Mercury News). It seems the club has still not received results from Major League Baseball’s lab in Salt Lake City, Utah.
They’re not the first team to suspend or postpone workouts due to lags in the testing process. Both the Astros and Nationals called off Monday workouts for the same reason. In a statement on the matter, Nats GM Mike Rizzo offered particularly pointed criticism of the league’s testing inadequacies — apparently much to the chagrin of commissioner Rob Manfred. The cancellations by the Nats and Astros, as well as delays from clubs like the Angels and Athletics, led to broad criticism for the league, prompting Manfred’s office to issue a statement defending their testing procedures.
Notably, the league chalked up the delays to “unforeseen delays” due to the July 4 weekend and concluded that “we do not expect a recurrence.” Expected or not, it appears some kinks in the system still need to be ironed out.
The Giants have been able to get the results of some tests, as outfield prospect Hunter Bishop and minor league righty Luis Madero are both known to have previously tested positive. However, MLB’s testing protocols call for tests to be performed every other day. To this point, collecting, shipping, testing and processing all of those samples in a timely fashion has proven difficult. The league and the MLBPA are in the process of searching for a second testing site, which could help to avoid further issues like the early ones we’ve seen so far.

You’d think people at Oracle Park would’ve seen this coming.

Only if you’re a seer. The sayers of soothes have to sit in the upper deck.

This is all just so futile. I just do not see one ounce of evidence that suggests to me that this season is safely playable.
clrrogers 2
Well, not with an avatar like that.
WiffleBall
I don’t know about safely, but certainly with travel between 25 cities and 2 countries, with current protocols– quarantining, isolating, etc– I don’t see how you can field 30 competitive teams every day for 60 days.
Does anyone want to see two minor league rosters playing in a world series?
scottn59c
This season doesn’t count.
WiffleBall
Counting or not, does anyone really want to see a World Series with minor league players? I believe the 2020 CBA does include a clause whereby the league can cancel play if teams “cannot field competitive rosters”.
oldmansteve
So the Tigers can cancel the season?

Better watching live baseball than watching reruns of reruns of classic games that are now being replayed already……..

speaking of ounces…….Has anyone else seen that Pic of Pablo Sandoval? Holy Cow. Dude is HUGE.. Dude showed up to camp sooooo overweight. A total Fatso. He looks completely incapable of tying his own shoelace let alone perform as a professional Athlete. The Giants.LOL
Datashark
Future Offensive Lineman, after baseball career.

Nose Tackle 🙂
Jean Matrac
DubsDynasty:
So what? Sandoval is on the roster on a minor league deal. If he’s too fat to play he’s gone. It won’t cost the Giants a thing.
DarkSide830
the league needs to process the tests at each team’s stadiums. that would make this much easier.
WiffleBall
Unfortunately it would mean setting up 30 high grade medical testing labs. Another reason why all 30 teams playing at home is a bad idea. If it were 3 or 4 cities, each with 3 or 4 fields, it could have worked as you suggest.
ldoggnation
They should have stuck with just Arizona or AZ and Florida.
mlbdodgerfan2015
Do we have a poll? Season starts and gets played. Season never starts and we are done. Season starts and is cancelled at some point during the season.
WiffleBall
I think barring some new crisis in the next 3 weeks (like a huge rise in deaths, and stay at home order in a major city) it starts, but ends either due to said order in a major city, or simply because too many major league level players are in quarantine midway through the season, and some team (or multiple) wind up starting more minor leaguers than not.
mlbdodgerfan2015
Yeah, seems like Manfred is intent on getting through the season. But a lot of positive tests and more players/coaches opting out. It’s scary when those around you are testing positive and the testing is not doing much to prevent the spreading. Seems like a disaster waiting to happen.

Season starts and gets played. Individual games are cancelled, but the season goes on.
Robertowannabe
I agree with your scenario. Season will be played but some individual games canceled.

So all that uproar about commenting policy and nothing changed. Slow clap.
DarkSide830
i dont know if it’s been as bad so far
Robertowannabe
Nowhere near as bad as it was before the pause and new rules. Used to be some real nasty name calling.

I agree with Dark Side; I haven’t seen the same level of vitriol…it seems like it’s working so far
SFBay314
Fourth of July delays? Who could have seen this coming on the calendar? Manfred is the worst
Bill Skiles
Dodgers supposed to play the Giants and then the Astros, both of which may not be ready if they don’t get these tests done soon.
.
mike156
As a matter of good business, you would think MLB would have done a better job of sourcing the testing. Better now than later, but it should have been done already. There were a lot of reasons (economic and health being obvious) for not having a season. But bad planning shouldn’t be one of them. Mistakes were made, now they need to be fixed.
John Campbell
It’s not looking good.
I still haven’t heard anything about whether the Jays can play in Toronto.
toooldtocare
Rarely does a plan of this magnitude goes smoothly from the outset. Adjustments need to be made, and hopefully they can get back on track. Seems pretty ambitious to test every other day and get results back quickly.
Cara Steen
There will be cancelled games, unlikely to be made up as teams have to shut down during this abbreviated season.
Cancel it already.
Dorothy_Mantooth
They really need to have regional testing sites across the country. Using just one lab in a recipe for disaster. Summer weather (thunderstorms, tornados, etc..) ground planes all the time, along with the 4th of July apparently. Given the need to get the results back so quickly, they have to use much more than one facility to do this effectively.
BlueSkies_LA
The plan was poorly conceived and badly executed. MLB must have the most inept management of any professional sport.
Cam
I’m inclined to agree – they are really making a hash of things.
Robertowannabe
The fun has just begun for the NFL. Now that they are having to consider the possibility of an altered season and reduction of TV money because of it, They are starting to talk about some concessions from the players and of course the players are having none of it to start. The NFL and NFLPA will be just as ugly as the MLB/MLBPA fight was/is.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
Agree with your post… and to me, the most frightening part of it is the delay caused by the 4th of July holiday. The ONE thing on your list that can be planned for and this happens…
troll
i don’t see why the schedule has teams going to the same parks twice. just play a seven game home and then go to other park and play seven. same two teams together for 14 days
BlueSkies_LA
The theory is the visiting teams won’t be cooped up in hotels for days at a time so the players will be less tempted to go looking for something to do. We’ll see how that works out.
giantsphan12
Now that some teams (Giants, As, Astros, Nats) haven’t even gotten their “intake” results back yet, but do have player’s congregating at the parks, we may already have the virus spreading among those teams, their staff, etc. I think it will only take one mini-outbreak on one team and you’ll see most veterans, league wide, who have made the bulk of their career income opt out. Then, MLB may have to throw in the towel. It’s too bad that MLB had three months to work out the testing protocols and still messed it up, causing yet another snag to the possibility of a season. Oh geez….
rangerslegend34107
They should of held the season at the Spring Training facilities as they originally discussed. Centralize everyone and try to streamline testing more efficiently. Having the whole league spread across the country and only having one testing facility is a joke. Some teams are going to be put at a disadvantage simply because of the logistics. They’re also leaving big gaps open so teams could see a spike in cases simply because they don’t have test results back. They need to get a handle on this right now. If one team has a breakout then the whole season is done.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I know it’s easy to look at this as… well a fiasco.
Hey, maybe it is.
But in my experience just trying to get our company of a mere ~ 60 employees through this I’ve found it’s really hard to foresee everything.
Good example: “how, exactly, do I pull a building permit, sir?” As we were figuring out how to move forward so was *everyone* else. And, my battle has been microscopic compared to what MLB is working through.
I’m not trying to make excuses or take a side, or whatever.
Just relating my experience. This is complicated, man. & there’s no real precedent any of us can follow. I didn’t expect it to be smooth.
whyhayzee
Why don’t they just use the same labs that tested for PED’s, they did such a good job with that.
braveshomer
hahaha…yes this exactly lol !!! ^^^

The winner this year will be the team that has enough players to make a team by October.

Call the season off before ball players start dying from COVID 19.
I’ve been a Giants fan for 58 years and what they are doing with this starting and stopping is crazy and stupid.
qturner
Yes, call this season off. Focus on staying as healthy as possible. Live to fight another day. That goes for everyone. Baseball is a game, played by grownups for money. This season is already over.
Ancient Pistol
Wrong! The season has just begun and many are happy for it.
kreckert
Well… I still don’t think there’s going to be a season, but it’s nice to have some good news for a change.
MWeller77
I agree with you – I appreciate the good news, I don’t think there’s going to be a seaons, and I really hope I’m wrong about the second part
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
I know MLB is scurrying to find more testing capabilities, which is good. I’m sure they realize that if any (all?) teams start running into the danger of four day delays on results, the season has barely a prayer of completing.
5TUNT1N
Luckily I haven’t needed to get a COVID test, I can only imagine having to get stuck in the nose almost to my brain multiple times a week just to continue my regular day to day. I’m not complaining I’m all for the health safety aspects, just as someone who has to wear a mask for 7-8 hours a day I could only imagine that would get old pretty quick especially if they were not giving my results in a timely manner.
metsfan68
I had it..its far from pleasant
Robertowannabe
I have not had a covid test either but have had to have a colonoscopy. Which is worse, prep for a colonoscopy or a covid test? Guessing though having to go through multiple covid tests would at least equal if not out do the prep as you only have to go through it once and be done with it for several years.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
A buddy of mine had to be tested recently (negative, thank the stars). When I asked him how tough it was, he said, “The woman who tested me touched my soul…”
