A quartet of Atlanta Braves tested positive for COVID-19: Freddie Freeman, Pete Kozma, Touki Toussaint, and Will Smith, per Sportscaster Kelly Crull. Though the teams do not have to release the names of the players who test positive for coronavirus, in this case, the players consented to have their names released in order to spread awareness.
Smith and Toussaint are asymptomatic at this time. Freeman tested negative upon intake, but started developing symptoms before workouts were to begin, per The Athletic’s David O’Brien. Since it appears Freeman caught the virus while at Braves’ camp, this will be an important situation to track.
Not to mention, it’s possibly a blow to the Braves on-field expectations for 2020. There’s no telling how severe a case Freeman is dealing with, and even after he’s back to full health, he’ll need to pass the new protocols to return to play. Freeman, 30, is the longest-tenured member of the Braves. When he made his debut in 2010, Chipper Jones, David Ross, Derek Lowe, Jason Heyward, Tim Hudson, Craig Kimbrel, and Brian McCann were still a part of the team.
Though it seems like he’s been around forever, Freeman still produces like a superstar. He hit .295/.389/.549 even while dealing with an elbow injury that sapped him of some power.
Smith, meanwhile, could return earlier if he remains asymptomatic, but it’s important to remember that anybody appearing without symptoms who test positive could simply be pre-symptomatic, at which point there’s no telling yet what kind of timetable for a return might be. Smith was to be an important piece of Atlanta’s bullpen after joining the club from San Francisco via free agency. As the Giants’ closer last year, Smith went 6-0 with 34 saves and a 2.76 ERA/3.23 FIP over 60 games.
Toussaint had an outside shot at winning a spot in the Atlanta bullpen, though he figured to join the big league club at some point during the season as he has in each of the past two campaigns. Kozma was to serve as a depth infield option after playing all of 2019 for the Tigers’ Triple-A club.
bravesninersnation
Ugh damn, feel better team!
Manfredsajoke
Finally a superstar (Freeman) diagnosed. Manfred will call the “season” off. I’m fine with it 60 games is laughable anyway.
black69
Lol yea. Right.
ham77
As long as you’re satisfied then that’s all that really matters.
WiffleBall
Two counties in texas just issued ‘shelter in place’ orders because hospitals have reached full capacity. This is when the deaths will start.
If you want to keep insisting this isn’t a problem, go ahead and be ignorant. But it’s not about the odds of young and healthy people dying, it’s the risk of them infecting more vulnerable people, like the elderly, those with diabetes, heart conditions, and other auto-immune disorders.
The reason the US has been so hard hit is that we are a country so focused on individualism, and unwilling to consider the collective good and look out for our neighbors.
rct
Well said, Wiffleball. It’s crazy the number of people in this country who ignore evidence and experts and think they know better. People ignore medical doctors and pandemic experts in favor of their preferred politicians or pundits who have no qualifications.
Almost every other country has this under control. We have dozens of examples to follow and you still have people complaining about masks and social distancing. Tens of thousands of people listening to Joe Rogan and Brandon Schwab or Ron DeSantis and Greg Abbott. Maddening.
radzyfsu
The hospitals are over run because they laid off workers and everyone is starting to get elective surgery done now that they couldn’t 3 months ago. The media scares the crap out of everyone so when people get a cough they rush to the ER. My father in law had and he was 70 and a cancer survivor. I had it and I’m diabetic. I was sick for a day. So keep keep driving in your car alone with your cloth mask that does nothing
rct
More disinformation and downplaying of COVID. Hospitals are overrun because there are many more people who have COVID. This is a fact. Your assertion that it’s because of an uptick in elective procedures is a lie. It is not backed up by any evidence whatsoever. You are lying and spreading disinformation.
The virus affects different people in different ways. Only a fool would think that their own, personal experience with something translates into everyone’s experience.
I’m glad that a diabetic like you ended up being fine, but that’s not everyone’s experience. Perfectly healthy, young people have died from it. This is a fact.
And wearing a mask cuts down on the virus spreading. This is another fact. Stop downplaying COVID. You are not only wrong, but you’re contributing to the spread of it. If we don’t have baseball this year, it will be because of people like you spreading this garbage around.
brucenewton
The largest hospital complex in the world ( in Houston ) have shut down elective procedures. They are running over capacity because of covid cases.
Warisalie
@rct when I was at the hospital nobody was there except people with covid. The emergency room was empty because people were so afraid. I live in Maryland and this is all fact
giantsphan12
@rct: I agree with you 100%. Thank you stepping up!
giantsphan12
@AFK, I call BS! No, the cloth masks don’t protect the wearer like an N95. They have proven to protect OTHERS from the wearers’ breathing/aerosols/spittle. They also have a mild protective effect for the wearer. But you wear it to protect others from yourself (if you give a s**t about anyone but yourself).
Admiraltrey
AFK711,
Exactly this, and actually those masks are probably worse than not wearing a mask at all because it gives people a false sense of safety. They believe they’re doing their part because they have a mask on, so it’s fine to go out and behave normally, and others around them see the mask and figure it’s safe, too. But it isn’t.
Not to mention all the “safe, caring” people who wear a mask and literally pull it off their faces to have conversations in person or on the phone. They’re no different than people with no mask at all, they just appear to be “doing their part”. It’s absurd.
Appalachian_Outlaw
It’s great that you and your father-in-law are both okay. It’s not a guarantee it turns out that way for everyone, though.
Dorothy_Mantooth
I was on the fence about the effectiveness of masks but since I live in Boston, MA, one of the hardest hit areas in the country, (#3 overall state in total deaths) I have seen first hand how effective wearing masks and social distancing can be.
The governor put a mask order in place about 2 months ago, and since that time, the infection rates and deaths are WAY down in MA. In fact, MA has been one of the least impacted states in the country over the last 60 days. Everyone has been, and still continues to wear masks. Even the heroin addicts in Boston are wearing them as the stumble down the streets. I don’t go anywhere in public without a mask now and will continue to wear one for the foreseeable future as it’s clear to us in MA how effective they truly are. I just don’t understand why so many people are opposed to wearing them. It’s perfectly clear they prevent the spread of the disease and ultimately save lives too. As one of the few Republicans in MA, I believe in all of the freedoms that our Constitution grants us as citizens, but if you truly care about your fellow man, neighbor, family etc.. you’ll stop being so pigheaded, put on a mask and help our country get this under control. We all want the country to reopen, see our sports teams back in action and want to get back to work too. Until a vaccine is available, why not wear a mask and avoid crowds? It’s worked well across the globe but we refuse to do it for some reason even though it has proven to be very effective. I just don’t get it.
mfm420
science doesn’t actually say that, but you go ahead and keep being wrong (it’s all your type knows how to do).
don’t bring up science when you don’t actually know a thing about it.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Science is not an exact science my friend and there are always scientific studies that contradict other studies, whether it has to do with COVID, vaccines, the flu, pain treatments, etc. I’m just looking at facts. How did Korea and many other countries get this virus under control so quickly? They heavily tested, everyone wore masks, they quarantined those who were positive and used contract tracing to have others quarantine as well. As a result, the virus is over 99.5% contained and death rates are down to zero. Same with New Zealand and other successful countries around the world.
If this has proven so successful elsewhere, why don’t we adopt it here? This isn’t a political issue or a personal rights issue, this is a common sense issue. Since we don’t have any drugs or vaccine to fight off this virus, why wouldn’t we follow proven, successful models? Masks, social distancing and quarantining the sick has been proven to work, regardless of what some scientists say about effectiveness of masks or how deadly COVID truly is. The longer this spreads, the longer it’s going to take to our country to get back to normal and getting back to normal should be everyone’s primary goal.
bhambrave
There have also been reports that some of the Asian countries are misreporting their data, blaming illnesses that might be Covid-related on something else. I agree that we should be more diligent, more uniform and universal in our protocols, but don’t put blind faith in statistics from other countries. They might be misleading.
UGA_Steve
That comment on elective surgery is quite possibly the most ignorant comment I have ever heard.
UGA_Steve
The cloth masks, practically any masks, are not to protect YOU. They are to protect everyone around you by helping to intercept a percentage of particles flowing from your mouth and nose when you breath/talk. Are the 100% effective, absolutely not, but they certainly can still help.
The problem with cloth masks are there are so selfish many people who only think of themselves. You know, the ones that keeping stating cloth masks do nothing.
SashaBanksFan
As one of the few Republicans in CA, I agree with you Dorothy. Well said. I even wear a mask whenever I’m outside exercising. I have become accustomed to it. It’s not preferrable but I do it. Wearing a mask can’t make COVID any worse and can only help the situation. If you can’t wear a face mask for health reasons then wear a face shield. One of the most American things we can do is sacrifice for someone else, whether it be for someone we know or someone we don’t.
LongTimeFan1
@ Afk711 –
You’re busy thinking about yourself, while mask wearers think about others.
You can be among the selfish or not, risk sickening or killing your family, friends or strangers – or not.
lebzet
This isn’t true. There was a study that showed that a mere paper napkin over the face did a very good job of stopping the tiny droplets that spread Covid.
EasternLeagueVeteran
Well, what about the hospital in Houston they started to build, then tore down because they were not going to have enough admission, covid or otherwise? Which hospital are you referrng to that is overrun. Give up a name.
EasternLeagueVeteran
They CODE cases Covid because it means an additional $33,000 from Medicare.
flmetfan
Amen, brother.
Sheep8
Why pay attention to facts? They only get in the way of a good argument!
Cubguy13
I have a heart issue and I don’t expect ppl to wear masks around me. That would be selfish of me to expect everyone around me to do for me when I could simply stay in my house and order whatever I need.
pt57
Wearing a mask isn’t burdensome, and unless you become a hermit, you’re going to come into contact with other humans.
Admiraltrey
Wearing a mask actually can be a burden. It’s harder to breathe, and especially in the heat of a Georgia summer it can lead to overheating issues as well.
99.5% recovery rate, and the vast majority of that 0.5% fatality rate is comprised of elderly and health-compromised individuals. If those at risk stayed at home and had no contact with other people, the fatality rate would drop even lower than it already is. Most people get it and have either mild symptoms or no symptoms at all.
Not to mention the fact that New York and New Jersey combined account for nearly 1/3rd of the fatalities in the entire country… They obviously got hit pretty hard, but the rest of the country is doing just fine.
UGA_Steve
I don’t have a heart issue and I do not expect everyone around me to wear a mask. In fact, I expect them to continue to be selfish, as it’s human nature.
Me, I wear a mask to try to prevent even one person from getting something that could be fatal. Am I showing any symptoms or have I tested positive .. nope. Will I ever truly know if I saved someone? Nope. Doesn’t matter. To me, it’s worth it.
bkbk
No, we were hit hard because the national leadership literally did nothing. Even today, a simple “masks are mandatory” from the national level and tiny bit of enforcement, would collapse the spread. As is, we are destroying our country and its not clear why.
Connorsoxfan
It doesn’t even make sense. He’s literally killing off his base.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
I have wondered why no one ever brings up the elephant in the voting booth.
Gasu1
It makes sense if you think about who he is, and how he thinks, as demonstrated by past behavior.
Warisalie
@josh bell…. k buddy. Keep voting like you do. Let me know how that’s working out. Failed cities in debt. Junk school systems who can’t spend their already over funded money correctly or they steal it. From Baltimore and when they brought in casinos the money was supposed to be for schools. I don’t see any changes lol. 3 mayors in a row resigned or jailed for corruption. Only 600,000 people here with over 300 murders a year(only reported). They do nothing to stem the tide of drugs. They have high recidivism because they let criminals back out when it’s their 3rd gun charge. Wonder why ppl are dying? Because a certain party panders and won’t do the right thing.
When they did vote on a tough crime bill in the 90s they paid and are still having to answer for it, when they did the right thing back then.
But keep on doing what your doing. Definition of insanity, doing the same thing expecting a different result
ronnyalton
@Warisalie,

the state of being seriously mentally ill; madness.
“he suffered from bouts of insanity”
That’s the definition of insanity.
bhambrave
@mfm420: That’s a terrible thing to say. You better hope karma doesn’t exist.
Joggin’George
Terrible thing to say but typical for those on that side of the political aisle these days… and yet somehow they think they’re the compassionate good guys.
herecomdatboi
this is why he will be reelected, because of retards like you
bhambrave
@herecomdatboi: I thought enlightened people didn’t use that word.
Joggin’George
Literally killing off his base? You’re literally misusing that word
DarkSide830
travel restrictions arent “litteraly nothing”
wild bill tetley
The states have to Govern. Some have, some haven’t. Protests literally break the social distancing rules and nobody is talking about it. The National Leadership could have taken control of things, and you (and others) would have called him a Dictator. He’s been anything but. The most vulnerable to Covid are an older crowd more likely to vote for this US President than the ex-VP.
We haven’t even touched the looting, theft, vandalism, arson, assault or a takeover of public property, but let’s not allow your false narrative to be torn to shreds.
pt57
No, there should have been a national policy or guidance. It doesn’t really matter what a state gov does if the bordering states do nothing.
mfm420
and you left out the fact your type helped spread this.
you don’t remember all the protests you guys did wanting states to open, do you?
no masks there.
or whining about churches opening up? oh wait, that was proven to spread thousands of cases, oops.
bhambrave
Did you support the George Floyd protests? If so, then you’re also part of the problem, since most of the protestors didn’t distance.
mfm420
yep.
but then i don’t support murdering folks like you do.
i also don’t support kiddie diddlers like you do, either.
way to duck the question, btw (it’s how i know what your faith is)
bhambrave
I didn’t duck anything. I happen to agree with you about the protests, but both sides violated protocols. You’re awfully judgemental about people you’ve never met and don’t know a thing about.
andremets
Mfm420, your comment about “faith” is really offensive.
carlos15
He literally closed borders to stop the virus from coming into the country while his opponents said it was useless and xenophobic. You’re an idiot
Gasu1
“He literally closed borders to stop the virus “. To foreigners only. Americans abroad were told to rush home. Thousands of Americans who had been living abroad were crowded into airports for hours, allowing plenty of opportunity for the virus to spread among them, and then to their communities. You think Americans are incapable of bringing the virus into their own country?
bhambrave
He didn’t tell them to rush home. You’ve been misinformed.
AHH-Rox
Amen, wiffleball.
It boggles the mind how so many of the people who claim to follow the “love your neighbor” guy (I do too) are unwilling to sacrifice a tiny bit of personal convenience to protect the health of their neighbors.
Gasu1
That was also the guy who said “You cannot serve both God and money.” Whatever happened to that?
mfm420
nothing.
it was also the same guy who said he’d return in his followers lifetime… the last of whom died about 75ad, with no return, oops.
bradthebluefish
Well said @Wiffleball. And I am on board of a “shelter in place” policy when hospitals are at full capacity.
mj-2
No ones ever pretended it’s not a problem.
Multiple bars in Texas also sued the state for closing them back down because they’re going bankrupt
Maybe try acknowledging sheltering in place forever has real consequences too? That seems to be the problem with some of you who keep screaming at people the virus is serious.
You turn right around and act oblivious bubbling yourself off isn’t serious too. Because it is.
Lol at “ignore the evidence” too. No ones ignored anything. At some point you have to make a choice. Sure would be nice if we could al just turn our lives off for 6 months and suffer no consequences, but that’s not life.
Wake up and get realistic about all sides of the situation. Otherwise you’re just as close minded as the people acting “ignorant”.
My guess is you’re one of the people who had no problem standing shoulder to shoulder at the “protests”.
brucenewton
Wearing a mask and social distancing is simple and easy to do for a few months. It’s not ‘shutting down your life’ in any form.
Warisalie
@mj super well said my friend
Gasu1
My guess is you’re one of the people who has no problem accusing others of hypocrisy while never, ever taking a close look at your own behavior.
looiebelongsinthehall
MJ. Financial consequences can be addressed later. Those bar owners though have no right to open when the state says they can’t. Their license contains regulations and restrictions. The same government that issued the license can temporarily or permanently suspend/revoke it. To prove that the decision was capricious is not easy to prove.
mfm420
and my guess is you’re one of the people who protested to open back up churches, screaming about freedom.
the same places that helped to create most of the cases.
look in the mirror if you want to see the people responsible for this getting worse.
Joggin’George
mfm420 : look in the mirror if you wanna see the hatred and obtuseness careening our society into civil war. Like, are you completely incapable of stating your own case without letting everyone know how much you despise anyone who thinks differently?. And you think yours is the side of togetherness and tolerance? Again, mirror, look.
looiebelongsinthehall
Agreed Wiffle. Our country’s name has United in it but there’s selfishness from those in the White House whose priority is on November to the young ignorant ones who simply are looking for instant gratification. This country needs to get our act together fast.
sherlock_
These players are part of the 38 positives, correct?

Not good they’ll all miss ST and be set back at least 30 to 45 days, not good

BuddyBoy

downeysoft42
And awayyy we gooo
Dorothy_Mantooth
One step forward and two steps back. Starting to really wonder if there will be a season or not.
Orel Saxhiser
Opt-outs will escalate over the next few days. So will the number of positive tests. These guys had to travel to make summer training. Negative upon entering camp; positive detections will soon follow.
BuddyBoy
We will see.
inkstainedscribe
Freddie lives in Atlanta. Didn’t have to travel and tested negative when he arrived at camp. I’ll be shocked if MLB opens the season unless teams are willing to start playing with 10-15% of the roster on the IL.
braveshomer
Lies! Freddie is invincible!…..man this sux for all them, but do we all keep pushing thru or let the fear set back in? Tough times for everyone and there is no right universal answer
Ducky Buckin Fent
@braveshomer
You really put that very well. No matter what side one falls on this I really hope no one can disagree with your sentiment.
For your efforts I now hope to see Yanks Bravos World Series.
I am fickle, however.
😉
pplama
I don’t think a single MLB team will play more than 15 regular season games.
I also think we’ll start seeing more and more players opting out for ’20.
We’ve just become too distrusting and selfish to defeat crisis that require relying on a strong centralized response and unified front.
Hope a vaccine comes quickly.
BuddyBoy
Sky is falling!!
Joggin’George
I don’t possibly see how this season is going to work or why so many are insisting that a season must happen at all costs. We can survive one summer without baseball. Heck we’re already almost half way through it. We’ve learned to make do while sacrificing much more important things. For the sake of safety and logic, for the integrity of the game: just cancel the season!
flmetfan
Right on!
sascoach2003
And, what will people be doing for the 4th? Getting together. 2 weeks from now the numbers will spike again!!
Cubguy13
So cool how the numbers only spike from recreational activities. No spikes from all those riots but those damn beach goers and 4th of July celebrations are killer
basquiat
The protesters wore masks.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Absolutely not. @basquiat
The park by my house was jam packed with non mask wearing protesters.
From the Department of Irony: the same folks protesting the police are now advocating for a state wide mandate to wear masks.
Question. Who will enforce this mandate? Private security? Concerned citizens? The Coast Guard? Spider Man?
Ya know?
Most cell phones have a calculator app. I advise some folks start using it because something ain’t adding up.
BuddyBoy
Lies
Ducky Buckin Fent
@haworth
Still figuring out this format.
Was “lies” a response to me? Because everything I posted is 100% accurate.
Were there protesters wearing masks?
Yeah for sure.
I’m in Minneapolis. Where all the protests started. Had a front row seat. At least a third of the people protesting at the park in my neighborhood were not wearing them.
I’m sure you can find news footage.
& yes. “My” governor is trying to issue a mandate for everyone to wear a mask.
& yes. The folks protesting a truly awful event & a really crummy cop are in total support of said mandate.
So.
What exactly is the lie?
Dorothy_Mantooth
Protesters in certain states wore masks. More protestors than not decided against it. Just a stupid decision if you ask me.
brucenewton
The virus is running uncontrolled from all activities where social distancing and/or masks are being ignored. Non-n95 masks don’t stop the spread if you’re not social distancing. Everybody that doesn’t do both are contributing to the spread.
Warisalie
Lol ain’t that funny? Like them Michigan protesters who wanted to open up? They were the worst! Gun toting but jobs……. and yet….. not one person was shot or injured lol. But yet the people “protesting” looted, burned, shot, and threw objects. Strange isn’t it?
Ducky Buckin Fent
@warisalie
I mean…kinda?
Tell ya. I served tours for this country.
The way things are right now is disheartening. At least to me.
I (suddenly and quite unexpectedly) became a single parent 16 years ago. I truly worry about the country my son is inheriting.
It wasn’t long ago that as a builder I was respected. Ya know? Now I’m “evil & insensitive & value profits over lives”. I can’t say I care for that very much.
Uh?
It appears Sensible Dialogue = Wishful Thinking.
Looking forward to have the Yanks playing to accompany me on long work days.
Go MLB season 2020!
mfm420
and it turns out, the ammosexuals did most of the looting and burning, oops.
try again, fascist.
bhambrave
@mfm420: Link?
Ducky Buckin Fent
Man.
So very disheartening. I was part of the peace keeping effort in Bosnia. I will freely admit that was the height of my personal idealism. But I did it.
Yet, today on the internet I am called a “fascist”.
That’s what I get for my efforts at trying for some kind of helpful dialogue.
Disheartening, man. Can’t put it any other way, man.
Note: I resisted personal attacks, name calling, sweeping generalizations, etc simply because that stuff is not helpful.
Happy Independence Day, everyone.
🙂
Joggin’George
Amen, Ducky, well said. You sound like a great person. Unfortunately there is so much hatred and intolerance these days starting with those who love to shout “fascist” at everyone and anyone.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I appreciate the hat tip.
I’m as flawed as anyone else, though.
Sports can be a really good vehicle to explore society as a whole. Here we have a real opportunity to converse, find common ground, grow, maybe even heal a little.
We are (& i can certainly suck, too!) not taking advantage of this unique situation.
Tough seeing our country so divided and angry.
Have a great Fourth, man.
russ5tide
So they are out at least 14 days. Hope they are alright
sadosfan
Well there goes their chances. Better luck next year.
oldmansteve
Lol you act as if he died or something
mike156
It was inevitable that at least one prominent player would test positive and develop symptoms. Let’s hope he recovers fully. I think what a segment of the electorate doesn’t get is that this isn’t a hoax, it can be serious, public health measures, like social distancing and masks, are needed, and over 100K have already been lost. Now, maybe MLB can find a way to minimize risk and play the games to give us the pleasure of watching them. But reality is reality, and we ought to start facing it.
BuddyBoy
Sure the virus is real but to say the response is anything but political at this point is absurd
mike156
You mean, public heath measures are political. Not wearing a mask, not engaging in social distancing, or taking other precautions….they aren’t?
Joggin’George
To be fair it can’t be denied that politics is on display when the government and the media give a free pass to protesters (not to mention rioters) concerning the rules and suggestions while turning the screws on just about everyone else. That being said, shelter in place, wear a mask when out and practice social distancing. To not do so is crazy. Common sense shouldn’t need governmental edict but it is what it be.
DarkSide830
its funny that 31 guys were known to have tested positive, yet when we hear the names of those 31 it suddenly becomes more jarring to people. relax, its still 1.2%. you can say they should cancel but the players knew the risk when they didnt opt out. they knew there was a good chance they might get it. frankly saying they should cancel ia unreasonable. that choice was for the involved parties – the owners and the players – to make, and they said yes to it.
oldmansteve
Exactly. We can simultaneously acknowledge the reality of the virus and still chose to live life as we desire. If the players want to play, they can play. Who are you to say they can’t? It’s like I woke up and I’m not in America anymore with some of these comments.
basquiat
Georgia’s governor hasn’t taken this seriously since day one. Many residents don’t either. Freddie’s testing positive will get their attention. It’s only a matter of time til this effort is cancelled.
DarkSide830
there you go. we blame leadership yet why would we expect any politician to dissent with the same majority that elected them. people need to stop blaming leaders and takea bit of responsibility.
braveshomer
while I absolutely agree we need to stop blaming leadership for our own personal decisions….its also true that the mass population can’t be trusted to make the right decisions, hence why laws are made lol. Like someone above said we in the U.S. are a very self involved society that could care less about our neighbors well being if it effects our own in any way. Both sides of the argument is a crap shoot.
DarkSide830
oh yeah, fact is there is a balance that is nessicary. i just hope people learn from this so it doesnt happen again with some other pathogen (not like its likely people will learn from it, but one can hope)
chippahawk
Defund the media, defend the police. Stop talking about it and it will go away. People acting like masks and staying 6 feet apart is laughable.
1738hotlinebling
A lot of people have it , you contract 5 virus every second
bhambrave
When I go out in public wearing a mask, people look at me funny like I’m a coward or something. They don’t realize that I’m wearing it to protect them, not myself. Masks aren’t very effective at keeping you from contracting it, just from you transmitting it.
BuddyBoy
If the mask doesn’t protect you, how do they protect others? Are you saying the masks work upon exhale but not upon inhale??
DarkSide830
its not that they dont protect you, its that they greatly block the outward flow of particles, but some particles that are airborne can get in unless you have a strong filter. unless you intentionally cough very violently the mask will be able to mostly limit the ammount that gets into the air. anything that is in the air is liable to get on the mask and sink in, even if the presence of the layer provides something of a mitigating effect.
bhambrave
You can still get the virus through your eyes, unless you’re wearing a shield or protective goggles. the mask keeps most of the droplets from getting airborne, protecting the people around you.
wiggysf
I was about to make this same comment. Unless you have a mask with a filter, it doesn’t do much to defend you. But it sure does stop you from spreading the virus.
DarkSide830
and that’s the tragedy of the situation. the masks thing doesnt work unless everyone does it. you cant just tell people to wear masks if they afraid, because the one without the mask in a room of masked people is arguably safer than the masked person in a room of unmasked people. i for one have bristled at some of the mask laws, like i wolnt wear a mask when im walking alone around the neighbourhood, but indoors or in highly trafficked outdoors areas i always do, and i dont see any reason not to unless you have a respritory issue that prevents you from being able to.
munlou
There are a lot of morons out there i don’t understand what’s so hard about wearing a mask it does no harm and in the long run it will help your elderly friends and neighbors
SalaryCapMyth
This is bad news, especially if Freeman got it in Braves camp. For a second there I STARTED to think the Braves were going to get off easy and then I saw this as I’m heading to work.
Losing Freeman is bad enough. If the Braves lose Smith also than that resets the Braves bullpen BACK to the same group that blew two late leads in the playoffs against the Cardinals.
Freeman alone might costs the Braves a playoff spot.
This could have a larger impact though. We’re starting to see a lot of players test positive and we’re starting to see some big names drop now. What does this mean to players like Trout who already stated they don’t feel safe playing and learns players are getting sick in camp?

All these right wingers making this a political forum are literally ruining this site. The pompous left wingers trying to educate them are not doing this site any favors either. This is a baseball site… take your garbage opinions and proclamations elsewhere please. Nobody cares about your feelings.

Thank you, Tommy. It’s always more enjoyable to talk about baseball. When a good deal of the people here are talking about things related to culture wars, baseball talk goes out the window and the site devolves into a pissing contest.

My apologies play ball !!!!!!!

So what? Now will the Braves think about trading for a 1st baseman to cover while Freddie is out or let Yonder Alonso or Charlie Culbertson play 1B while he is out. I say let Charlie play First
russ5tide
I honestly don’t think Freddie could have contracted it at Braves camp. Isn’t there like a 7-10 day incubation period? Seems to me that he would have contracted it before camp seeing as they have only been at camp for 4 days now. I dk though
Dorothy_Mantooth
It’s only a 2-3 day incubation period, so he could have caught it there or on his way there. We’ll know in 2-3 if he caught it there as there will be a slew of additional positives following it. Let’s hope that is not the case.

I support stay at home and be safe, wearing masks, social distancing… I agree with all of it.. but the level of hatred and venom, the antagonist snobbery coming from the left on this board and all over right now is very telling. It’s sickening that a baseball discussion that leads to discussions on public safety so quickly degenerate into excuses to insult folks who don’t walk lock step in with certain ideologies.
SalaryCapMyth
I like much of what you said but when I go up and down these articles, I see both sides saying terrible things. You really have no reason to come down on either side more than another.
Joggin’George
Yea I can accept that. Maybe my point would be stronger if I removed the partisanship from it. I just wish folks could disagree without insulting and hating each other.
Appalachian_Outlaw
Big blow to a short season, but that’s really of lesser importance. Hope Freddie, and all the other players make a full recovery.
