The Mets will promote well-regarded pitching prospect David Peterson to start tonight’s game, according to Tim Healey of Newsday (via Twitter). That’ll require active and 40-man roster moves to make way for Peterson.
Peterson, 24, is a former first-round selection who has shown well in a steady march up the ladder. Last year, he worked to a 4.19 ERA with 9.5 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 over 116 innings at the Double-A level.
The Mets are in a bit of a pickle with their pitching staff. Corey Oswalt struggled in a spot start in the place of the injured Marcus Stroman, who’s still hopeful of a quick rebound.
Bringing up Peterson now appears to set him up to log a full year of service, if he can stick in the big leagues, based upon a pro rata conversion to the typical 172-day scale. Waiting just one more day would’ve foreclosed that possibility, but the Mets are obviously angling to win now and need the start this evening.

Maybe out if All this Mess in 2020 They’ll Find a New Rotation Piece

Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t they have to wait one more day to get the extra year?

Oh boy, if that’s true then that was another great baseball decision made by the Mets today
findingnimmo
Ha! if that is true.

They had to bring him up. Who else was going to pitch. You going to worry about something five years from now.. he probably won’t even be anything more than a 3/4 pitcher. People like to hate on the Mets for no reason.
jimthegoat
They didn’t “have” to do anything. Going with a bullpen day for one day or calling up one of their AAA depth guys for one start isn’t going to kill them.

@Metfan You don’t worry about calling him up because the plan isn’t for him to stick around. He’s simply Stroman’s fill in. Give him a couple starts til he’s back and then option him down. You can call him back up after a day at any point this year. The only thing this call up will likely end up burning is an option year. But that would’ve been burnt up had you waited til tomorrow anyway.

Yep….that is true……the cut-off to achieve an extra year of control is after today.
If he remains in the MLB for the rest of this season….
(He would accrue 62 days of service time /67 total service time days in the shortened season) x 186 original service time days = 172.11 service days.earned per the MLB/Union agreement.
You need 172 days to earn 1 service year.

They can just send him back down once Stoman returns, and he won’t get his year of serivice!

Just as they will probably option Jimenez once the rosters reduce and keep the year of control. Alternatively, if either is needed all season, they could spend part of next season at AAA . That said, this may be a moot point is Peterson turns out to he a back of the rotation guy or worse who bounces back and forth between the majors and minors. Oh, and it he pitches very well and they keep him, it may be worth it. The main downside of adding Peterson now is that it burns an option year for him if he gets sent down and requires a spot on the 40-man roster, which already seems to have 42 players plus Thor if the Mets website is to be believed. Secret DFAs or guys put on the 60/45 day IL, I’m guessing. Fingers crossed the next guy to go is Tyler Bashlor.
jbigz12
Yeah. This is a pretty easy call. Peterson will be back in the “minors” before the years over. Looks like a spot start or two here.

I think he will be a solid MLB pitcher. This became a faster track to the majors than if it had been a full season. Would have had at least 1/2 season at AAA.
Joggin’George
Even in a shortened season I think they’re gonna need a lot out of Peterson. Thor is out, Stroman May soon return, but the injuries have probably just begun. Plus between Porcello and Wacha, at least one will likely pitch their way out of relevance.
zanderap
Oswalt didn’t start, he relieved Porcello and pitched poorly over 4 innings.
jyosuckas
Was gonna point that out, I think the writer meant to say “mop up duty” rather than “spot start.”
