JULY 28: The Rangers placed Kluber on the 45-day injured list Tuesday, per TR Sullivan of MLB.com. They also activated southpaw reliever Brett Martin, who had been shelved after a positive coronavirus test, recalled outfielder Adolis Garcia and optioned fellow outfielder Leody Taveras.
JULY 27: Rangers righty Corey Kluber has been diagnosed with a grade 2 tear of the teres major muscle in his right shoulder. He’ll spend at least a month resting the injury before attempting to resume throwing.
It’s a brutal outcome for both the 34-year-old Kluber and for a Rangers team that acquired him from the Indians over the offseason. Given the timing involved in the shortened season, it’s all but impossible to imagine him retaking the mound in 2020.
Kluber is earning at a $17.5MM annual rate this year and can be retained for a $18MM salary in 2020 (or bought out for $1MM). It’ll be awfully difficult for the Rangers to take that bet now.
The Rangers will call upon southpaw Kolby Allard for the time being. If all goes well, he’ll be a competent back-of-the-rotation piece, though it is hard to imagine the lefty coming close to Kluber’s potential contribution.
spencer99
Rip. Good thing they didn’t give up much for him
Simonmike
Lol like he died. Maybe you’re referring to your playoff hopes.
No Soup For Yu!
Or more like, “rip in his teres major.” Rangers didn’t really have serious playoff hopes even before this.
toooldtocare
No Soup……not even Mulligtawny?
JohhnyBets67
Another Jon Daniels trade that didn’t work out so hot for Texas or the other team. Though I’d rather have Clase coming off a PEDS suspension. There’s a chance Cleveland get something out of him for the next 4 years.
Lanidrac
With a 16-team field in a 60-game season, they would’ve had a decent chance to slip into the playoffs with Kluber. Without him, not so much.
Halo11Fan
Then this is a new injury. Even so, the Indians traded him for a reason.
CNichols
It’s “new”, but he’s in his mid-thirties and had a rough go of it last year with the broken arm and then the oblique issue when he tried to come back.
I think the injury risk is elevated in this bizarre season with a shorter summer training to get up to speed. Just a bad combo all around with an arm that has more innings on it than most trying to come back from a year lost to injuries in a very unusual circumstance.
hiflew
Yeah and the guys the Indians got were traded for reasons too.
Halo11Fan
True, but the Angels dodged that bullet.
hockeyjohn
The Indians traded Corey Kluber for several reasons. 1. Save on salary. 2. They had plenty of starting pitching. 3. They needed a controllable mlb bullpen pieces that throws with great velocity which their bullpen lacked last year which Clase was supposed to bring. With that said, I will always wish Corey well and thank him for all he accomplished as a Cleveland Indian.
Polish Hammer
Uh yeah, they traded him for a reason…the reason is they picked up his option for the sole purpose of trading him and getting something out of him instead of walking with no return. With his injuries and performance last season his market was slim. The Tribe got Clase and see him as a big piece of the back end of their bullpen for years, this lost suspended season notwithstanding.
brandons-3
Reason #35631 why I’m not a general manager. I would’ve definitely traded for Kluber, especially knowing I could have him for at least two years on an affordable contract. Of course, it’s money washed if he’s not able to pitch.
hiflew
Money laundering is illegal.
philliesphan77
Lol
SalaryCapMyth
Brandon, I think most of us would have pulled the trigger from our outsiders perspective. The cost to get him seemed like a bag of baseballs.
Ducky Buckin Fent
@sans
Yeah. I would’ve traded for him as well.
Ricky Adams
I’m a ranger fan and even knowing what we know now, I still make that trade. Anytime u can get a former cy young winneron a buy low trade with bounceback possibility, u do it. Esp if all u give up is a 4th outfielder type that’s worn out his welcome and a young reliever.
SalaryCapMyth
See I entirely agree with Ricky Adams. The only reason I think you don’t roll those dice is if you have perfect hindsight.
filthyrich
I heard that my hindsight would be arriving in 2020. Still waiting!
Mrtwotone
Man that’s rough. Would love to see this guy come back strong though. One of my favorite players
Orel Saxhiser
A shame. This happening in a season that might get canceled is the ultimate insult to injury. Verlander, too.
Tom84
gosh darn it i had high hopes
knolln
clase can and will do his time.. no, there’s no reason cleveland traded him besides poor decison making. corey is the ultimate dude.. prove us wrong.
hockeyjohn
Look for Emmanuel Clase to become Cleveland’s closer in the future. He will also still have 6 years of control.
ChangedName
That sucks, this season is a mess already and it’s only been three games. He’s one of the best pitchers of this generation and it would have been cool to see him re-establish himself and stay healthy.
toooldtocare
As former Rangers manager Ron Washington said…”That’s how baseball go”.
Logjammer D"Baggagecling
Did he say that in 2011 game 6?
toooldtocare
If he didn’t, he should have! That and make Cruz run laps for his bonehead play.
CNichols
The tricky part for Kluber here is that option likely won’t get picked up now, so he’s going to need to get paid on the FA market this offseason and there is a ton of uncertainty with that.
Part of me thinks he’s better off taking this rehab as slow as possible and missing this entire year because that way he can go into hopefully a more normal year next year completely healthy and sign a one year “show me” contract to display that he still has something in the tank.
On the flipside, I wonder if Kluber is thinking that he needs to come back ASAP this year, even if its just out of the pen at the end, so that he can show that he can still pitch before he hits the market. I think someone is going to take a gamble on him either way and sign him to try to capture some of that pre-2019 magic, but when he gets back on the field might have a big impact on what that deal looks like.
SalaryCapMyth
So many of us talked about how Cleveland just gave away Kluber that I think Indian fans have a little bit of leeway to express themselves. Anyone who is honest has to admit that this result was always a significant possibility.
The winner of this trade is very much in the air and it could be that nobody wins.
Halo11Fan
Angel fans ripped the Angels for not getting Kluber. And of course Ranger fans talked about him being a done deal.
SalaryCapMyth
I remember that. You kind of got the impression that some Angel fans pretty much wanted to hire anyone who could generally throw a ball toward the back stop. Every team has those fans.
Halo11Fan
Four Angel Starters have allowed a total of one run to the A’s in 3+ games.
Unfortunately, that’s not counting Ohtani. Who gave up five runs without getting an out.
SalaryCapMyth
Thought I should have mentioned in my previous post, trading for Kluber was a frequent topic brought up by Braves fans as well.
Been following the Angels some this year. Sadly, though the line up hasn’t exactly been inspired it’s the bullpen that’s dropped the ball for you guys, right?
Halo11Fan
Either pitchers are way ahead of hitters, or the Angel’s pitching staff is great.
But right now, it seems if you throw a strike with something on it, players are not hitting it. At least A’s and Angels hitters are not hitting it.
Canning is pitching now, he looks great. Heaney looked great. Bundy looked great. Batters look really behind.
Halo11Fan
And as soon as I say it, Oakland puts up a crooked number.
fishy14
Watch the white Sox this year
They can hit
Can’t catch the ball
And really can’t pitch that much
Baseball 1600
At the end of the day the Angels still did not make a significant acquisition at SP where they needed one. They’re banking on Ohtani returning to form and Teheran not being mediocre for the first time in his career. Imo a questionable move getting Rendon instead of Cole.
Halo11Fan
Baseball 1600. Maybe, maybe not.
Adding Ohtani, Heaney, Canning and Bundy might be significant. We’ll know in two months.
The Human Rain Delay
There were also a Ton of Angel fans who thought Ohtani was going to be a + from jump street this year as well after not pitching much in over 2 years…..
Halo11Fan
Count me in. Did you see Richards yesterday?
Ohtani had TJ 22 months ago.
SalaryCapMyth
@bball1600 You don’t know what a mediocre pitcher is then. His ERA+ clearly demonstrates that. His durability is ALSO not mediocre but hey, you keep going with your false naratives without looking at anything.
cdav45
This isn’t a career threatening injury as unfortunate as it is. As an Indian’s fan, I think they got too little for Corey, but that’s just my take. I hope he gets well soon and returns to form. He has reached an age where minor injuries are not uncommon, but his discipline in training is second to none.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Sounds like a buy low candidate for Chaim Bloom next year, provided that the season can last until August 31st (which doesn’t look too probable right now).
Briffle2
A lot of Captain Hindsights around here regarding the Kluber trade.
Polish Hammer
Exactly!
axisofhonor25
That’s a pretty decent injury. Peavy had something similar when he was with the Sox.
James Midway
I don’t know what that is, but it sounds painful.
thejuice01
I tore my Teres major and lat completely. Other muscles take over or you can have surgery, but it takes while I think. I’m not a doctor or a pitcher, but I don’t think we see Kluber on the mound for a long while.
coachtim
Well there goes the Rangers picking up his option. Had such high hopes. In prayers Kluber ⚾️
johndietz
I remember all the Angels haters that were calling for them to trade for him lol
CKinSTL
It doesn’t sound good for 2020.. but hopefully he can get back to form in 2021. He’s a fun guy to watch when he is on.
DarkSide830
Allard should fill in quite well. i think his perception by others has fallen due to the lack of K’s, but he looked good last year and is still very young.
wileycoyote56
I wouldn’t write anyone off this season, lightning in a bottle can make anyone a playoff club. They’ll get that parity they’ve been after in MLB
jessaumodesto
Basically out for the season
getoffmylawn
I’m an Indians fan and I’m very sorry to hear about Mr. Kluber, who is the consummate professional who has done well for the Indians and it’s fans. Hope things work out for him in Texas and that he gets healthy, but if Texas doesn’t carry his option for 2021 I would LOVE to see him back here in Cleveland. Until that time comes, be well, Cory.
jim stem
Do they recover his salary in insurance?
