The Astros have selected the contract of righty Brandon Bailey, the club announced. He’ll be on the Opening Day roster.
This represents an unlikely outcome for Bailey. He was left unprotected by the ’Stros in the fall, then selected by the Orioles in the Rule 5 draft. The Baltimore organization sent him back to Houston, leaving Bailey without a 40-man spot.
Some pitching absences helped clear the way for Bailey. The 25-year-old had a nice 2019 showing at Double-A, posting a 3.30 ERA in 92 2/3 frames with 10.0 K/9 against 4.0 BB/9.

O’s dumped their rule 5 guys way too quickly

Seems like a 60 game season would be the best time for a bottom dwelling club to try out a Rule 5 arm. Bailey wasn’t ready to pitch in the bigs, but over a two month period, I would have kept him on.

Os returned home before the season got paused. Had they known rosters would have expanded and they’d play shorter I’d think they would have kept him.
doublee919
Sorry. Returned him.
DarkSide830
they should have kept them anyway. that they let them go with weeks remaining in ST after pitching good shows why the team is where it is now.

Elias has been with the Orioles a whole year. He wasn’t there for the downfall and tear down.

Worst team in baseball can’t find a spot for its rule 5 picks? Poor management
DarkSide830
my thought exactly

At the time, the O’s were doing the two Rule 5 guys a courtesy, giving them a chance to go back and impress their original teams. As it turned out, with the expanded rosters and shortened season, both probably would have made the team. Not like anyone could have seen this coming.

Otherwise known as the player traded for Ramon Laureano.
GreenWood Porter
It’s still way better than LA trading Yordan Alvarez for Josh Fields.

With what he did last year the O’s should e ran with him for the sprint. It’s the ideal scenario and to keep a rule 5, like what jb19 said
hammer_time24
Like what others have said, the O’s returned him before anyone knew the season would be a 60 game sprint with expanded rosters. Sure, they probably should have kept him anyway, but they clearly didn’t think he was ready to stick for a full 162.

I read Andrew Bailey at first and thought this really is a year of comeback attempts lol.
RedFraggle
While I wished he would’ve stayed, Elias had known about him for a long time obviously since he came from the Astros. I think expecting a 25 man roster with subpar pitching to be able to carry Bailey for an entire year without being able to option him would’ve been really hard. Just puts more stress on the rest of the club.
But what do I know, it seems like all the experts on here knew we would have a 30 player roster.

Good point about Elias having been with Houston. He may have seen Bailey as a possible “if he can do this one thing better” Rule 5 flyer who didn’t show up and/or develop that one thing.

Wow. Apologies for whatever I did to quadruple-post that last comment.

If this hasn’t yet been mentioned, good point about Elias having been with Houston!
