The Yankees announced today that left-handed pitcher Aroldis Chapman has tested positive for COVID-19, showing mild symptoms (H/t Bryan Hoch of MLB.com). Needless to say, Chapman will be away from the team and won’t be allowed to participate in team workouts for the foreseeable future. He’ll need to test negative twice before he’s allowed to rejoin the Yankees.
Chapman’s positive test occurred after he passed the Yankees’ initial intake process and began team workouts, meaning that he had trained with the team at Yankee Stadium prior to testing positive. The Yankees conducted contract tracing after learning of Chapman’s results on Thursday, with James Wagner of The New York Times reporting that the process revealed no further positive tests.
The Yankees have also had Luis Cessa and DJ LeMahieu test positive for the virus, making Chapman the third Yankee to receive a diagnosis since the season reboot.
Should Chapman’s illness prevent him from playing in regular season games for the Yankees, veteran Zack Britton is the standout choice to take on the bulk of the closing duties in New York. That said, the unusual nature of this season will likely alter bullpen usage as we know it, so teams might be hesitant to rely on a single closer day in and day out. Nonetheless, look for Britton to pick up some slack in high-leverage innings.
dirtbagfreitas
Not good. Is this the first player who was in camp and was originally cleared to test positive? No further positive tests are good but the next few days will Be interesting
GareBear
Can Gallagar with the Royals earlier today.
dirtbagfreitas
Thanks Gare!

I’m curious what the league is doing to prevent or minimize false positives.
SashaBanksFan
I was thinking the same thing especially with NASCAR’s Jimmie Johnson’s situation
DVail1979
Freddie Freeman in Atlanta got it after reporting
BabyBraves2.0
DVall1979
Actually Freeman never reported to camp as he had already tested positive.
Get those facts straight please!
jonnyzuck
I’m not sure this is bad news (other than for Chapman and the yankees). They said that the contact tracing after he tested positive yielded no additional positives so if true that’s a sign that the protocols are working and MLB may be able to avoid a breakout after players inevitably do test positive
clrrogers 2
I’m confused. Can Gallagar tests positive for COVID = comments closed. Aroldis Chapman tests positive for COVID = comments open. What’s the difference?
giantsphan12
I was wondering same thing about comments????
geotheo
The person who closes the comments was taking a break. Comments will be closed soon
CowboysoldierFTW
Im sure. I wish they kept all comments open.
WiffleBall
I wish they’d close all comments, on all stories, forever.

Because it’s way too much work to just not scroll down and read them.

@wiffleball
I’m pretty new here. So I still don’t know very many posters.
But.
Weren’t you the guy who was posting some…uh… questionable comments the other day in an effort to get the comments shutdown permanently?
If I have the wrong poster; respectful apology.
If I’m correct; man, I try to not be judgemental. But, jeeez what a crummy goal.
Greg M
He hates comment sections and he never misses a chance to comment about it in the comment sections that he so often frequents. He’s a riddle, wrapped in a mystery, inside an enigma.

He’s a sad, strange little man.

I don’t know if this is some kind of complex internet hazing of me? 🙂
But…man, if that’s true that wins today’s Ironic Moment Award.

Yeah he is….. got me booted on my last name….. War. But I came back as altuve’s father, rode in mike trouts time machine. . . I’m alive and well……he is the ultimate troll, But I’m a WAR time consigliere.

Alright. Three posts is enough to convince me (I mean in today’s society that’s *a lot* of agreement)
Merci.
Good looking out, fellas.
I can’t help but feel pity for dudes like that. Uh?
I mean, I get my dogs out a couple hundred times/year for some hunting. I don’t ride it enough but I absolutely love my Triumph Speed Triple. Another thing I wish I had more time for is Martial Arts… still study but I’d like to do more of it. I read classic American fiction. I’m self taught with cooking French cuisine (mixed results!). I think *those* things are fun.
Being an internet troll seems like a lousy hobby, man.
Uh?

I know that Polishuk had said in a chat that they were going to stop closed comments on the Covid threads maybe this is when they started?

Does this comment about “Richard” violate the policy? Hmm.
geotheo
The original story says “more to come”. Most likely when George Miller updates the story, he will notice he forgot to close the comments on the original story and close them then. I say by 6PM Eastern Standard Time, comments will be closed
Ducky Buckin Fent
Or maybe he’s giving us an opportunity to remain respectful to one another and maintain a productive dialogue.
I think we could.
But, hey!, I’m an optimist.
So.
giantsphan12
@ ducky, I am an optimist too. But if you look at Southside’s comment above, clearly some people simply have no constraint or respect. Whatever one’s personal beliefs are about covid, the fact remains that the U.S. is in trouble and close to 140k have died. A comment as crass as the one posted by the above commenter regarding Chapman is beyond insensitive and unkind to all who have/are struggling with this virus, especially those who have lost loved ones.
Ducky Buckin Fent
I’m still trying to figure out this format.
To be clear; my reply was for @geotheo, in regards to the writer leaving comments open.
Trust me. I in no way, shape, or firm find Southside’s comment to be good form.
Please make note of that.
giantsphan12
@Ducky, your first post was clear, and I was just agreeing with you how the comments policy is perplexing at this time. I then jumped on @southside a bit as I felt his post was out of line with the notion of leaving “respectful” comments. You and I are on the same page.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Thanks @giantphan
(That’s the NY football Giants, right?)
😉
In all seriousness I love your response to me. It shows an effort to establish some common ground. This is what our country needs right now, man. Not anger, fear, & divisiveness.
Well…that is how I see it, anyways.
There’s so much noise, clutter, & negativity on *both* ends of the spectrum. If the other 90% of us can wade through that there is hope.
No sarcasm. Stay classy. “Ductos Exemplo” was drilled into me at one point in my life. Hard words to live by. But I think our exchange shows something along those lines.
Peace.
giantsphan12
@Ducky, No, the Giants I love are presently one of the worst teams in the league. But the rebuild is going well…..2022-2023-2024 should be good. I appreciate your cap nod back at me. You’re right about the divisiveness. I’m all about making alliances and finding common ground, not what separates people. Stay well my friend. Peace back atcha!
Ducky Buckin Fent
Bummer.
Hope he gets through this ok.
I’m pro-Mlbseason, or whatever. But, I do see the risks.
I’m a contractor. I’ve heard of crews for other companies that Covid has ripped through. Hey, I’ll give anyone like $5K if they can make my crew of 11 surly roofers wear masks.
Just don’t see that happening, bro.
jonnyzuck
If you’re willing to spend $5k have you tried offering them $500 each to wear masks?
megaj
You’ve heard of crews that have been “ripped through”? Was it the oldest roofing group in history, because that makes no sense.
YankeesBleacherCreature
He means other contracting crews have had Covid effect many of their members and which could be partially blamed for them refusing to wear face masks. It’s a tough thing to working outside in hot weather and wearing one for an entire shift. That doesn’t mean it’s right.
Ducky Buckin Fent
One of my friends owns a company similar to mine. Covid hit his siding crew. Thankfully, it hasn’t struck mine.
True, none of them died. They were hella sick though. Also heard about a framing crew that was hit. These guys simply cannot social distance due to the job.
There’s also a huge lag in getting building materials on time due to manufacturing facilities being hit.
On the “just give them each $500 to wear a mask”. I’m going to guess you’ve not spent much time around building tradesman. They’d happily take the cash. They’d wear them until I was no longer on the building site. Then promptly take them off. Bet.
mike156
Comments on or off, I hope MLB and the Union is having some serious discussions about how to handle all this. The season is already the equivalent of an exhibition year. That’s fine, we don’t need to look at the results as “real” but I’d like to see baseball, so long as players and staff are safe.
mike156
should be “are: having.

When is the final date for playing to drop out and for teams to lock in their rosters? That’s the day when we’ll know about the scale of COVID within the ranks of MLB.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Are you by any chance VC from RAB?
Cuz his roll calls & posts were definitely notorious.
Gigorilla
Another domino. This is going to continue.
bobtillman
So AGAIN the fact that AC tested negative and positive a few days later doesn’t mean the first test was flawed. We need to get away from this paradigm that testing is a treatment; it isn’t. In reality, testing negative doesn’t mean much if you leave the testing site and don’t use the behavioral precautions. Nor will getting tested as negative prevent you from contracting the virus.
Does testing have a place? Sure, targeted to certain demographic areas. But testing is not IN ANY WAY SHAPE OR FORM a panacea or a cure or anything else. It’s a day-specific indicator; that’s it.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Lol
Wait…what @Tillman?
I don’t see anyone postulating that testing = treatment.
I’m pretty new here. But, if memory serves, I’ve seen some good posts from you.
You ok, bro?
I’d hate to think you’re just taking this opportunity to be MAD ONLINE!, bro. Because that would change my opinion of you.
🙁
bobtillman
Then why the angst over the fact that AC tested negative one day and positive the next week. The moment after you are tested negative, you are 100% as likely to contract the virus as anyone else. 100 %. No differance.
Thousands died of AIDS because of the false seurity that negative testing inspires. And ya, I’m a bit angry. No one doubts that testing is useful in certain specific areas (health care workers, etc.). Or as a diagnostic tool (though even there its usefullness is questionable) . But it has extreemly limited efficacy.
We shouldn’t be surprised that any player becomes infected no matter how many times he gets tested.
Ducky Buckin Fent
Man, you’re sort of all over the place in your post.
I’ll just address a single aspect. Does me posting “bummer” articulate “angst” to you? If it does I’d recommend downloading a dictionary app. Just being a friend.
🙂
Also, (ok so two aspects) you seem to have left “a bit angry” in the dust. Deep breath. Like right before you set, rock, & fire the first pitch.
I have absolutely no idea why you’re freaking out on me, man. But whatever. If that’s your thing go ahead. Seems like a poor use of typing skills but you do you, bro.
Have good night.
megaj
Who Cares? Young healthy men have next to zero risk of getting seriously ill from covid. It shouldn’t even be news.
megaj
Not to seem mean here, but it is the equivalent of any of us reporting that we caught a cold or the flu.
nowheretogobutup
Mega, Wrong, over 45% of the latest outbreak is from ages 19 to 40 is that considered young in your thinking/
Gigorilla
Mega says “young healthy men” (is he watching a Village People video?) wont get seriously ill.. Some might, we are still learning about this, but those same young healthy men may infect their parents and others if they don’t know they have it.
That is the scary part.
stansfield123
These things happen all the time, with the flu. Players just get sent home until they’re no longer contagious.
I imagine that’s what will happen here too. Chapman should be back in a couple weeks.
stansfield123
Meanwhile, looks like LeMahieu is one of the survivors. It was close though, he had to sneeze twice in week one of the ordeal. And then he felt a bit of a chill during the second week. Turned out to be from opening the fridge, but still.
Anyway, that’s all behind him, and he’s back in camp. We pray for Aroldis now.
