Today marks the deadline for teams to submit to Major League Baseball their initial spring training player pools, which can comprise up to 60 players. Players are not eligible to participate in either a spring training or regular season game until they are included in the pool. Teams are free to change the makeup of the pools as they see fit. However, players removed from a team’s 60-man (for reasons unrelated to injury, suspension, etc.) must be exposed to other organizations via trade or waivers.
Not all players within a team’s pool are ticketed for MLB playing time, of course. Most teams will include well-regarded but still far-off prospects as a means of getting them training reps with no intention of running them onto a major league diamond this season. A comprehensive review of 2020’s unique set of rules can be found here.

Bard still there, huh?

His minor league numbers in 2016 and 2017 bring a smile to my face while simultaneously making me feel very bad for the guy.

Ryan Rolison stands out as potentially the most interesting name on the list. Well outside of the nostalgic factor of Daniel Bard that is. Rolison was the 1st round pick in 2018 and does not need to be on the 40 man for another year and a half for Rule 5 protection. I wonder if the Rockies are seriously considering starting his clock this early.

Rolison is good but i dont see them pushing him up early. i can see him being a huge factor in 2021 though

That’s not many outfielders, especially considering that Blackmon, Desmond, and Tapia are all DH candidates.
Who was going to play OF for them in AAA this year (besides probably Daza)?
Stevil
Mundell, though not on the 40, can play RF.
But they should be fine. I’ve been hoping to see an outfield of Hilliard, Dahl, Daza and Blackmon.
So, we’ll probably see plenty of Desmond and Tapia.

Why no Colton Welker? He is the future for the Rockies.

He’s just another third baseman that is blocked and will have to move to first. The Rockies already have like 4 pretty good first base prospects (Nevin, Mundell, Lavigne, Toglia) already. Welker is completely superfluous. The Rockies would be smart to use him now as a trade chip for pitching or better yet a catcher. Of course, given their track record, they will use him sparingly until he has lost almost all value and then DFA him in 2025.
