Today marks the deadline for teams to submit to Major League Baseball their initial spring training player pools, which can comprise up to 60 players. Players are not eligible to participate in either a spring training or regular season game until they are included in the pool. Teams are free to change the makeup of the pools as they see fit. However, players removed from a team’s 60-man (for reasons unrelated to injury, suspension, etc.) must be exposed to other organizations via trade or waivers.
Not all players within a team’s pool are ticketed for MLB playing time, of course. Most teams will include well-regarded but still far-off prospects as a means of getting them training reps with no intention of running them onto a major league diamond this season. A comprehensive review of 2020’s unique set of rules can be found here.

Good enough to make playoffs for sure.
Ha
In a short “season” a hit start could mean “playoffs” for just about any team.
You think this roster is better than the Yankees and Rays? I won’t argue with your point though, because in a 60 game season, one hot streak could put pretty much any team into the playoffs…
Well, with all the championships the Rays & Yankees have won over the past 20 years your logic is tough to argue with… **eyeroll**
what do the last 20 years have ANYTHING to do with this years roster? oh yeah, absolutely ntohing
Listen here whipper snapper… back in the day, when the Yankees had a payroll twice the size as the other teams combined, they won a few championships. Back before catchers had facemasks and fielders had their own gloves, the Yankees ruled the post season. Back then, players were paid so poorly, lunch would have been considered a PED. Back then, the Yankees could afford to scout the countryside looking for the players with the most talent. They would offer them contracts to come to New York for a chance to play. Other teams would put a sign on the outside of the stadium… “Help Wanted: Infielder that can catch and throw” When another team did get a great player, the Yankees would offer that team money to take that player. Even with that huge advantage… they barely won half of the championships over a 40 year span.
Can you imagine having anywhere from 5 to 9 future Hall of Fame players on your team and you still only won half the championships? LOL… Can anyone say Bobby Cox?
So, if you happen to hear a chant “28!, 28!, 28!” It’s either Yankee fans rooting for their 28th championship, or Yankee fans telling you how many times the Yankees have lost in the post season..
Or perhaps an inkling into the Yankees next championship run, eight long years away.
What a strange post Melchez. Does anyone care about any team’s success long before you were born?
I actually met Bobby Cox who lived in a local motel when he managed the West Haven Yankees. I was just around 16 but I can’t say I thought he’d become a HOF manager. The team’s star if I recall right was Charlie Spikes.
How many years did the O’s win April, May and June? Anything can happen.
I can’t agree with that.
HA!!
Where’s Sale?
He had Tommy John surgery back in March, he’s probably on IR.
oh.
I’m surprised to not see Lucroy.
They have to rework his contract because it initially had dates in it where he could leave if he didn’t make the major league team. Those dates likely have passed so they have to rework it for the current environment. Until they do they can officially list him.
Got it, thanks!
So no Lucroy this year as the 60 man is set?
No, the story states that teams can change the 60 man player pool at any time.
MLB.com said Lucroy will be on the 60 man, but was not there yet because of some procedural thing.
Yairo! good to see the guy on the list.
Groome, Mata, Jeter, Duran, Ward, Casas?
Groome is destined to be a career minor leaguer at this point.
None of the guys you mentioned are on the 40-man roster yet, and only Mata is at the point of needing to be added to it after this season to protect him from the rule 5 draft. The rest have more than a year before hitting that point. But if they’re used this year they would have to be added to the 40-man which starts their option years clock. So they likely won’t consider using any of those players this year.
I shuddered seeing Hembree listed with thoughts of “Here we go again”!
Only 47 so there is 13 more slot to fill
Looking for Longhi and Tanner Houck who could help possibly in 2020. Duran also maybe. Mata who could get some work in at the very least working out with the rest. Think Groome should work on his own and prepare for full season (hopefully) in 2021
Hope they can use this season to straighten out pitchers Perez, Eovaldi and McHugh for 2021 along with the development of Verdugo, Chatham, Dalbec and maybe even Wong,
One only hopes as fans, but seriously doubt many managers can connect like Cora did with them.
Rusney Castillo not an option? Is it a payroll thing maybe?
#freerusney
Free rusney lmao I love it. Yeah poor dude just got flat out screwed over by his contract. He hasn’t been bad in the minors ive seen him a few times, but admittedly not starting caliber in the mlb.
You don’t reset the cbt by adding rusney
Rusney makes $13 million which the RS do not want to add to their MLB payroll for tax purposes.
dont see Longhi. rip
They have room for 13 more players. Don’t worry the goat will make the team.
What about Jonathan Lucroy did they release him or or did he opt out
It’s strange that they only release the names of 47 out of the total 60 players. I wonder why that is? We’ll definitely see Mata, Duran, Ward, Groome, Casas, Rusney and maybe even Blaze on their final, full list.
Rusney is never making an MLB roster bc then they have to take the cap hit
Rusney will have made $72.5 million over seven years. He may be the highest paid minor leaguer ever. I do not feel sad for him and will be glad that he can move on after this year. The last year that Allen Craig and Rusney were at Pawtucket together they combined for about $23 million in salary (dead money).
Thanks Ben Cherington for those two mistakes.
This is not a good roster
A couple of ‘surprising’ guys on the roster Robinson Leyer (RHP) and John Andreoli (OF) are two guys I wouldn’t have necessarily pegged as making the (currently) 46 man group. Though I suppose both fill potentially useful depth positions if/when needed so not all that surprising. I guess the biggest “surprise” is that it doesn’t seem as though they’ll be carrying and true “prospects” on their 60-man “roster” as some teams have seemingly chosen to carry a couple for developmental reasons, the Sox don’t seem to be of that mindset. One could argue Chatham and Dale are ‘prospects’ and they are — but I also think they are both legitimate ML ready (if needed) players so it’s not as though they’re being carried exclusively for development. On that note… I would love to see Dalbec make the team at some point this year to see how he fares in the majors. He has a LOT of power and if he can improve his ‘hit tool’ a bit he could become a very legitimate 1B/3B option for them going forward. Personally I’m a believer in his potential… but will be interesting to see if he gets a chance this year or not!
What a terribly weak Pitching Staff. Bloom sucks. He’s overrated & in over his head.
Please. Give every GM a pass right now. The Sox were never going to spend this year and frankly Bloom did great given the hand he had. I’d love to see Holt here instead of a Peraza but otherwise he did phenomenal. Wait until after 22 to judge Bloom. A lot will also depend on CBA changes. Such assumes there’s a season in 21 and 22. I don’t count 2020 and between the pandemic and the expiration of the CBA, who knows?
I don’t think this 2020 Red Sox team will win many games with this roster.
Looking at the 47 (out of the allowed 60) brings back memories of Theo’s first winter. When (I thik it was) Gammons who asked if he was concerned about losing anybody in Rule 5 after drawing up his 40-man, Theo admitted he wasn’t sure he could fill the 40-man, never mind having to worry about losing anybody. I think they actually went into the Winter Meetings with 32 players.
