On a day loaded with first-round signings, the Padres have become the latest team to reach a deal with their top pick. The Padres announced that they’ve come to terms with outfielder Robert Hassell III, the eighth overall selection in this year’s draft. Hassell will earn $4.3MM, down from the $5,176,900 slot value of his pick, Jeff Sanders of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.
The 18-year-old Hassell committed to Vanderbilt before the draft, but the Padres managed to stop the Commodores from landing a highly promising prospect. MLB.com, FanGraphs, Baseball America, ESPN.com and The Athletic all ranked Hassell in the draft’s top 20 prospects entering the proceedings. Nobody was more bullish than ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel, who ranked Hassell sixth of those available, wrote that he may “have the best hit tool in the prep class” and noted that he has drawn comparisons to high-end Braves outfield prospect Drew Waters.

Think u mean Padres Connor

Your headline lists the wrong team just an FYI
bardbot
I’m sure 150 people are going to point this out, but you’ve got Pirates in the title
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Was going to comment earlier asking why hasn’t this happened yet but didn’t want to sound like BigPapi4ever bringing up the Padres on an article that wasn’t about them. But anyway…
Hellz yeah! Let’s go!
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
And they somehow manage to sign a Vandy commit for $877k below slot. Here’s hoping that leaves them with enough to lock up Cole Wilcox.
lowtalker1
Well wc extra cash he can be looking at a 2.1-2.2 million dollar signing bonus
ChangedName
Wonder when that farm system will start panning out, it feels like they’ve had one of the best systems in the game for a couple of years and the major league team is still awful.
Hoping it turns around for them in 2020 and beyond for the sake of Padres fans.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
That’s because Preller doesn’t know how to assemble a major league roster.
bringbackthebluee
Terrible player development. They ruined Urias and Quantrill and they will ruin Josh Naylor next.
Javia
Quantrill has 1 partial season. He pitched as well as Paddack did with a 3.32 ERA to Paddack’s 3.33, before the last month. I don’t think he is ruined. Urias also only has a year of experience. You may be reaching a bit calling them busts. But I sense you have a bit of anger at Preller and/or the Padres.
Padres458
The top guys on the farm hasn’t changed much, renfroe and Margot didn’t pan out.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Yes they did pan out. You don’t have to be a perennial All Star to “pan out.” Plus Renfroe not getting named an All Star last year was ridiculous. David Dahl was named an All Star last year even though his and Renfroe’s stats going into the ASB were pretty much identical and that’s before you account for Dahl playing his home games in Coors Field.
vtadave
Well he did have a .308 OBP at the ASB last year.
lowtalker1
That’s an extra 1.2-1.4 mil for third round guy
lowtalker1
1,431,000 extra for Cole Wilcox so far
alexryanperry
Cole Wilcox is a consensus 1st round talent that dropped because he would be expensive. The Padres are willing to pay him.
bringbackthebluee
Please please find a way to sign Cole Wilcox.
Javia
I am personally more excited about Justin Lange.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Why?
Javia
Because he is explosive, has a great arm and his potential is absolutely untapped at this point.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Padres have the longest active streak of signing every player they’ve drafted in the first 10 rounds. Last player they drafted in the first 10 rounds and failed to sign was Brett Austin back in 2011 and that was probably a blessing in disguise.
msmithwa
I’m curious what motivates someone to sign under slot value and how negotiations in such instances occur. It’s not like slot values are a secret.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
Players don’t care about slot value they care about the absolute dollar figure.
All American Johnsonville Dogs
You gotta remember. Guys get drafted higher than they typically would based on mocks and such.
Despite being drafted 8th overall he typically went lower in mocks and people had him ranked lower than 8th.
So even though he signed for below slot it probably was near what he would have earned if he was drafted where he was projected. Or he was given a little more than projected to forgo college.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
RH3’s signing bonus comes in a hair under the slot value for pick #12. Ranked #15 on Fangraphs and #16 on MLBPipeline.
VegasSDfan
Big money for a guy that just finished high school. Good luck to him.
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Nice. Get Wilcox signed.
Javia
Eric Lauer, Joey Lucchesi, Dinelson Lamet, Cal Quantrill and Chris Paddack as starters. Fernando Tatis Jr. (along with Franchy Cordero and Austin Hedges) in the field and Michel Baez, Jose Castillo, Javy Guerra and Andres Munoz in the pen.(Along with Emmanuel Clase who was traded to the Rangers) Sure, no talent there NotoriousVC.
Javia
Oh, and Franmil Reyes and Hunter Renfroe. That’s a couple of stars and a lot of solid talent, with a lot more on the way.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
“I didn’t dance around Lauer’s extra 3 years of control. Preller didn’t care because he is not part of the Padres future. He would be their #6 starter this year, therefore he had no place. We have 5 or even 6 better starters than him RIGHT NOW, with more on the way. He was a candidate to get cut from the rotation and the Padres got a better pitcher for him.” -Javia
*Also mentions Eric Lauer as one of the Padres talented players*
Which one is it?
Javia
Must we do this every time Mike?
I put up the names of 5 starters that the Padres drafted or signed and developed themselves. The worst of these guys is Lauer, and he is still a solid starter. And no, he is not part of the Padres future because everyone they currently have starting for them currently is better. That does not mean that there aren’t a lot of teams, like the Red Sox, who would love to have him. Because the Padres seem to develop a lot more starters than the Sox do, among others.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
So Lauer is good when it suits your narrative and only then?
Got it.
Javia
Forget it. If you do not bother to read, I will not bother to write. I explained this already.
Afk711
Tatis and Paddack are the only ones at that list who have shown the ability to use that talent and become difference makers. Theres a lot of talent in baseball.
Javia
The Padres brought up 2 stars just last year Afk711. Tell me, how many teams brought up 3 last year? Any? How many others brought up 2? I would guess that most teams did not bring up 1 star last year.
The Padres brought up an ACE and a star SS last year, and still have the best pitching prospect in baseball, along with another top 30 hitter AND pitcher. Can any other team in baseball say that?
Afk711
Paddack is not an ace yet despite your floundering for any young Padres player. The Dodgers have five top 100 prospects to add onto a 100 win major leauge core. #3 farm + 100 win team > #1 farm with a bad major leauge team. I’ll take them as the model over the Padres.
Javia
Yes, the Dodgers are currently much, much better than the Padres. So? The Padres are coming up. Yes, the Dodgers have 5 top 100 prospects. The Padres have 5 top 60 prospects. Advantage-Padres. Of course Paddack cannot be considered an ACE yet. But how about we compare him to an ACE? Paddack-142ip, 3.33-ERA,0.98-WHIP. Buehler-183ip, 3.26-ERA, 1.04-WHIP. Pretty damn close!
But why am I bothering even talking to you? You have already made up your mind and you obviously will never change it. You didn’t bother to respond to any of the points I made in my post, you just changed the subject. Obviously you cannot refute my arguments so you change the subject and take shots. Have fun with that.
Afk711
I can refute your arguments just fine. Its funny because my first reponse was on that whole list of players you named Paddack and Tatis are the only difference makers so far, yet your response was to tell me how good Paddack and Tatis are lol. Yes I know they are good. You think every young player that ever repped the Padres uniform is good. Lauer and Lucchesi.. really. Preller already gave up on Lauer. Lucchesi is a junk baller. Quantrill is so bleh. Cordero and Lamet are giant teases who need to actually start to produce. Javy Guerra is so good he had to turn into a pitcher… Franmil and Naylor are both DH’s. Munoz looked great but blew out his arm. Clase is good but long gone and was traded for trash by SD. Anyone else? My beef wasnt with Paddack or Tatis.
Javia
Sorry, how many homegrown stars do the Dodgers have?Pollock, Betts, Turner, Muncy…not home grown. So Seater, haven’t you been trying to replace him? I know you wanted Lindor. Plus he is not really a star. Will Smith? Not a star. Soooo…Bellinger? Yes, major star. 1. Stars in the rotation? Buehler and Kershaw. That’s it. Just 2. So 3 homegrown stars total. And the Padres brought up 2 just last year. Hmmmmmm. So it seems like the vast majority of the talent coming from the Dodgers minor leagues are…just solid contributors, not stars.
Your Dodgers produce more solid position player talent. My Padres produce more relief pitching talent. We will have to see how the next generation of starters turn out.
Afk711
LOL you’re so out of touch with baseball its hilarious. Paddack and Tatis are NOT home grown for the Padres. The Dodgers had the most home grown players of any playoff team. Corey Seager has been an all start twice in the real world, not your Padres fantasy land. The Dodgers are better at everything than the Padres. No one tries to produce relief pitching, another clueless idea on your part. Most relief pitchers are failed starters anyway. AJ Preller isn’t good enough to hold Friedmans clipboard. Anyone can builld a farm system with 5 years of tanking.
Javia
Tatis never even suited up for the White Sox minor leagues. Paddack pitched more minor league innings for the Padres than he did for the Marlins. So yeah, I would call them homegrown.
Yes, as a said, the Dodgers have lots of homegrown solid players and role players. Where do your stars come from? Care to rattlle off any names I may have missed? Corey Seager has been an all star twice, yes. Overall, he is a .294/.362 20-HR per year player. A very good player, yes, but not a star. He numbers say Tommy Pham with a touch less power and 20+ SB less per year.
You can make sweeping statements that say nothing (the Dodgers are better at everything, Preller couldn’t hold Friedman’s clipboard), but if you have any actual evidence to support these claims I would love to see it.
Also, if you think nobody tries to produce relief pitching, maybe your Dodgers should start. That does seem to be your 1 major weakness.
Oh, and Cordero and Lamet have 1 year of experience each. I expect big things from Lamet, Cordero not so much. But if you want to make sweeping judgements on guys with limited experience, I guess that means that Julio Urias will never be anything but a good, not great relief pitcher? I mean, he has had 4 YEARS as opposed to the 1 of Cordero and Lamet. Or is it different for your players than it is for others?
Afk711
You’re literally trying to make up your own definition of homegrown. Its cute how Padre fans talk like they have made the playoffs ONE time since 2006. I have evidence to back up my claim, its the 5 years each person has been in charge of their team. the Padres have not improved once under Preller. Eric Hosmers contract is all the proof I need. Urias has been a very solid pitcher for the Dodgers and has proven that at the big level. How about you go take a look at his numbers. They are far better than Lamets who gets the “he is coming back from injury excuse”. LOL Urias was coming off a career threatening injury and came back strong in 2019. Its not different for my players, my player has flat out performed better. Seager was an MVP candidate before his injuries which he is finally ready to move on from and revert back to what he has proven he can do. The fact you actually think he is comparable to Tommy Pham is more Padres delusion. Pham took 8 years to reach the bigs. Seager was up in 3. Padre fans are so cute thinking 2019 Seager is who he really is. You just tell yourself that sparky. No one sets out to develop relief pitchers in volume. They want every pitcher to be a starter and if that fails, move them to the pen. The Dodgers had the 2nd best bullpen in the NL last season but sure its a WeAKnEss. Win 80 games one time. Until then its just more of “LOOK AT OUR FARM SYSTEM”
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@Javia are you literally trying to change the dictionary definition of homegrown?
Billy Baroo
If Seager isn’t a star, please sign me up for 10 of whatever you’re calling him.
He had 14.4 fWAR over his first 329 major league games. That’s 7+ per season.
His “down” 2019 was 3.3. That beats every position player on the 2019 Padres except Tatis. It beats every p.p. except Tatis and Machado by a LOT.
As Padre fans, we cannot win a whizzing contest with the Dodgers based on distant history, recent history, or current events. We will only end up wet and smelly. In the near future we may be able to do it without ruining our shoes.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@Afk711 and Billy Baroo don’t bother. Javia is Preller’s mother. He can do no wrong in her eyes.
bighiggy
I think the cards had the most homegrown players of any playoff team, braves had alot too
Javia
,@”Yes, the Dodgers are much, much better than the Padres. So? The Padres are coming up.”. I guess people only see what they want and ignore the rest, huh?
@,,”Javia is Preller’s mother”-Ad hominem Mike. Get a hobby.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@Javia puhleeze you are the queen of ad hominems
Javia
Coming from the man who just cannot stop. “Queen of ad hominems?” Ad hominem again Mike.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
More a statement of fact
Javia
Ad hominem again Mike. You just cannot stop flinging insults can you? Please work on yourself.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
I fling facts junior. That you don’t like those facts doesn’t make them not facts.
Javia
Extremely immature Mike. We both know I am not Preller’s mother. Continuing to insist that I am and calling it fact is just incredibly immature. If you would like to communicate like an adult, I would be happy to talk to you. If you are just going to continue with endless ad hominem attacks, I will just communicate with others instead.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@Mrs. Preller like I said before, the type of comments you put out are the type you are going to get back.
Javia
No insults here from me Mike. Nothing BUT insults from you. Try again.
And ad hominem again.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
I haven’t insulted anyone once on this thread but sure.
bringbackthebluee
Lol did a Padre fan sleep with your mommy? I always see you trolling anything that has to do with the Padres. Loser
All American Johnsonville Dogs
Paddack I would not consider homegrown.
He pitched 116 innings for the Marlins in the minors and 180 or so innings for the Padres in the minors. Not really homegrown.
Tatis Jr you have a case for being homegrown. He was signed by the white sox but played for them in the minors at any point.
Anyways. Guys like Baez, Castillo (35 inning for rays and 200 innings for Padres in the minors), Munoz, Wingenter, etc their pitching is littered with homegrown talent they primarily developed themselves.
Of the bunch I see Munoz being a super star closer one day.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
@All American Johnsonville Dogs there is no considering or not considering Paddack, Tatis or really any player as homegrown. Homegrown means the player was drafted or signed by that team and was never at any point in time a member of another organization. That’s it.
nentwigs
The actual contract negotiations were one big HASSELL !!
Billy Baroo
Padre fan here.
The Dodgers are currently better than the Padres at everything and have been for a long time. They have a fantastic front office. They are great at minor league development. Their revenue is delivered in boxcars.
Preller has shown two strengths: identifying amateur / minor league talent and convincing the owners to spend money. He has not yet built even the semblance of a good major league roster. If he can learn from his mistakes — huge IF — he may put us in position to be a consistently plucky underdog that can wrangle a division title or two.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
I’d like to see them add someone above him and put that person in charge of trading and roster building and such but keep Preller in charge of scouting. It would keep him in the area he shines in and only that area. I wonder if he would be amenable.
MikeEmbletonSmellsBad
With Justin Lange and Owen Caissie now signed, the Padres can afford to pay Cole Wilcox $3,327,696 to sign without having to lose future draft picks. They will have to pay a 75% overage tax on every dollar they spent above their bonus pool but with the amount of money they are paying Eric Hosmer and Wil Myers to be below replacement level they really have no excuse for not offering Wilcox all of that.
