June 30: Meyer is taking his physical for the Marlins today and will receive a signing bonus of “about” $6.7MM, Heyman tweets.
June 10: It hasn’t been long since the Marlins made University of Minnesota right-hander Max Meyer the third overall pick in the draft on Wednesday, but the two sides have already reached an agreement, pending a physical, Joe Frisaro of MLB.com tweets. He’ll earn a bit less than the $7,221,200 slot value of his selection, Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports.
The 21-year-old Meyer was a member of the Golden Gophers from 2018-20, when he combined for a sterling 2.13 ERA with 11.4 K/9 against 2.5 BB/9 over 148 innings. Meyer carries a 99 mph fastball and a devastating slider, according to Keith Law of The Athletic, who contends he’s possibly “the most major-league ready player in the draft” (subscription link). Marlins director of amateur scouting DJ Svihlik agrees, having said (via Frisaro) that Meyer is “just about” ready for the majors.
Meyer is now the latest high-end pitching prospect in the Marlins’ system. Before the team selected Meyer, it already boasted fellow righty Sixto Sanchez, a 21-year-old who ranks as MLB.com’s 22nd-best farmhand.

The was quick.

The Marlins aren’t waiting around
DarkSide830
let the conspiracies begin
just-a-fan
what possible conspiracy?
DarkSide830
i dont know, but people always seem to find ones to make up
ThemanofTruth
His mom slept with the GM to get him drafted
Been hearing that from people in Miami
MarlinsFanBase
If that’s true, then she’s clearly dumber than Michael Hill, especially since it seems that they have stopped listening to him.
usernamesrboring
For real???
bobtillman
It’s a comforting thing that teams aren’t allowed to negotiate with players until after the draft.
kodion
Nothing nefarious here. What’s to negotiate?
Marlins: Offer (See article)
Meyer: (Two thumbs up!)
Marlins: Done.
Getting a virtual signature would take longer
😉
bobtillman
Yep all 7 million dollar decisions are usually made like this. Moving on……

Who’s a good comp for Meyer you guys think? Marlins ain’t messin around
pacman alan
Strasburg perhaps?
cookmeister 2
Sonny Gray. Short but athletic
DarkSide830
high velo starter – tends to make me think Thor as a lazy comp
MarlinsFanBase
Oh, I hope he does way better than Syndergaard. I want a pitcher that lives up to the hype – not an overrated one.
DarkSide830
Thor if he didnt have health problems
MarlinsFanBase
Yeah, he certainly has a problem with chronic impaired cerebrum.
whynot 2
They are talking about syndergaard not you
MarlinsFanBase
Yes, because Syndergaard clearly displays an air of focus and dedication to his career.
Heck, with his obsession for Mrs. Met, he’s got worse taste than former Mets GM, Steve Phillips.
whynot 2
Are you sure you are not a Mets fan? You seem to know way too much about them… borderline obsessed it may be argued
MarlinsFanBase
It doesn’t take much to know about the Mets. Your PR team, media and fanbase make sure everyone knows everything about the Mets all the time. Your media outlets force it down everyone else’s throats just like the Yankees and Red Sox.
It’s one thing to try to be in the spotlight when there is something to show off, but when you guys do it to show how ugly your team is, it’s just wow.
MajorLeague79
Walker Buehler would be a good comp.
Gwynning
I know he had a rough year but Max’s closest comp is probably Edwin Diaz. Touches triple digits, wipeout slider and probably slated for the ‘pen. I understand some in the Marlin’s organization see Max as a starter so maybe he will get every opportunity to develop as a starter. I think he could be an All-Star closer. Good pick, nice floor/ceiling combo. Big arm but needs to work on control. I wanted him to fall to #8!
flguy2k5
I heard walker beuhler comparisons a lot given their height, fastball and slider are a lot alike
Dorothy_Mantooth
Tim Lincecom is the best comp for Meyers. Almost the same exact size, both had a wipe out slider and Lincecom had quite the fastball himself when he was healthy. Miami would be beyond thrilled if Meyers turns into the next Lincecom (2X Cy Young winner).
MarlinsFanBase
Another talented pitching prospect in our system. This is good. You never have enough arms.
clepto
I have 2 and happy with that.
ludafish
I was hyped for Lacy but the more I hear about Meyer I like him. You can never have enough pitching…I find it easier to find offense when you need it.
Meyer seems like a really chill dude but when he’s on the mound he turns in to a maniac with a lot of passion. I like it. I also have a lot of faith in our scouts right now with what they did last year in the draft and with the farm overall.
SamtheMan!
Let’s pray for the MarlinsFan that this midget can turn into a better starter than Matt Harvey was. It will really break fish fry’s heart over here if he isn’t. We’ll have to put him on suicide watch!
MarlinsFanBase
Better than Matt Harvey? Very low bar there. Must be a Mets fan.
rangerslegend34107
I still don’t understand why they traded Zac Gallen.
MarlinsFanBase
We have many pitching prospects and needed more prospects at positions. That’s why we went to get Jazz Chisholm, Lewin Diaz and Jesus Sanchez at the deadline last year.
msmithwa
He’s ready to start playing baseball…oh wait…
haighwiser
Where did the guy go who was complaining about minor leaguers not making enough during the shutdown? $7 million, alot of these guys are well taken care of before they ever swing a bat or throw a ball as a minor leaguer.
JustCheckingIn
Wow you are an idiot
3 guys a year get bonuses to this level. The majority of guys this year will go undrafted, and sign for a MAX of 20K. Many will get less
Then they develop for 3-5 years, earning about 10 grand a year. THATS what everyone speaks about.
wild bill tetley
Are you suggesting maybe 1st round picks take less to spread that money around for the 10-20k guys? Because you just laid out a case where an inexperienced draft pick becomes a multimillionaire before proving a thing to the others making a small fraction of that amount. Huge discrepancy that kinda hurts your point.
stlcards0911
Actually isn’t them getting drafted mean they proved something?
formerlyz
I had at least 9 people on my board, including multiple potential injury situations, and not including Asa Lacy, that I would have considered at number 3 overall in a 5 round draft, before taking an undersized reliever at that spot. There are guys lower on the board, that I would also have liked over him. Its unbelievable that time and time and time again, the Marlins find a way to frustrate…This dude better be Zack Grienke or Pedro Martinez at that spot and/or the money they saved there better go to an extremely strong rest of the draft. Tanner Burns, who went 36th, is relatively similar to Meyer, as well as other undersized RHPs lower on the board. The Marlins actually did competent things in last years draft. They could theoretically use him as a closer, considering they dont really have one. I’m not saying he might not be great/be in the big leagues possibly even this season. I would just rather let someone else take that chance at that point in the draft
ludafish
They see him as a starter who isn’t far away. His slider is great. He should be good to go next season or the one after that when the rest of the kids are about ready.
Also they say he didn’t sign for that much under. I would wait to see what they do with the rest of the picks
Mjm117
Meyer was going to top ten regardless. I personally thought Martin was going to be the pick.
And I still prefer Martin, but aside from physical stature both he and Lacy dominated equally as a starter. Would’ve been happy with Lacy as well but Meyer actually has better athleticism and mechanics.
Overall Meyers has has a plus FB and arguably the best Slider in the draft with above avg change up and control but only decent command.
That’s a starters profile.
wild bill tetley
I’m sure Keith Law also said David Purcey was the most major league ready when he worked for the Blue Jays as the worst scouting consultant on the planet. Track record does not lie.
Admiral
I played college football with Max’ dad and uncle. Even if he only has 1/2 their intensity, he’s going to own Miami (by the way, it rivals or exceeds his dad’s and uncle’s). He has crazy stuff, and it’s only getting better. And, for all you naysayers parroting that “undersized” crap, he hasn’t stopped growing geniuses. Rest assured, he isn’t 6′ anymore and he’s over 200 lbs. This kid is a beast and he’s going to be a force to be reckoned with. Give him a chance and enjoy the ride. Or, be a naysayer dreaming about Asa, and enjoy the taste of crow.
SamtheMan!
Many 21 year old men start growing. Why I went from 5’6 to 6’7 that year I tell ya!
hoff38
Not a Marlins fan and think their weak economic position is not good for MLB, but their pitching prospects look really good. They have 3 guys in AA already to go with 2 of their current young starters. They are building a nice flow of young pitchers coming up over the next 3-4 years.
Jeff Zanghi
I agree, also not a Marlins fan, but think they have a solid young core being built that should be ready in the next couple/few years. If I were a Marlins fan I think id be getting excited about the amount of intriguing young talent making its way to the majors.
Jeff Zanghi
If Meyer and Sanchez wind up being as good as people generally think they could be, and the Marlins can get a couple of their young hitters to click as well — they could have a surprisingly solid core in a couple of years. Obviously they’ve been quite bad for some time now… But if I were a Marlins fan I’d be encouraged by their current group of prospects and more hopeful for the future than I’d have been in a while.
SamtheMan!
It’d be nice to have Yelich with that core, wouldn’t ya say, chap?
