With MLB’s shortened, five-round draft a week away, multiple players have removed their names from consideration. Baseball America’s Carlos Collazo reports that high school outfielders Dylan Crews and Brandon Fields have withdrawn their names, as has Florida State outfielder Reese Albert, who’ll return to FSU for his senior season. ESPN’s Kiley McDaniel adds that high school catcher Kyle Teel is also withdrawing. Crews will honor his commitment to Louisiana State University, while Fields will play for the University of South Carolina and Teel will head to the University of Virginia. They’ll all be eligible for the 2023 draft.
Crews is the most notable of the bunch, landing 39th on McDaniel’s Top 150, 54th on Baseball America’s Top 500 and 68th on MLB.com’s Top 200. Collazo writes that Crews ranked as the No. 2 prep player in the country entering last summer but had somewhat of a down year that caused his stock to dip a bit. As for the others, McDaniel calls Teel a potential third-round talent, while Collazo lists both Fields and Albert as “top-200 caliber” players, which suggests that neither was a lock to go in this year’s shortened draft.
It’s possible, if not likely, that additional players will remove themselves from consideration in 2020 between now and next Wednesday. Beyond the draft being capped at five rounds, this year’s slot values did not increase over their 2019 levels, and draft bonuses are being paid out in deferred fashion through 2022. Those who go undrafted, meanwhile, will be limited to $20K signing bonuses. High school players, in particular, could see appeal in playing college ball and bolstering their stock, given the elimination of the middle and late rounds of the event.
DarkSide830
honestly i wouldn’t draft veru many high schoolers this year if i was a MLB team. too much risk with so rounds. maybe top-tier guys, but id rather take the more sure-thing.
JohhnyBets67
There’s no sure things with college guys either. If your scouting teams have been on in the HS guys; this is as good of a time as any to take them. A number of these guys played winter ball and you can be sure scouts had eyes on them. It’s not as if 4th and 5th round college draftees become regular major leaguers at a high clip anyway.
Afk711
Or you could draft unsignable draft picks that will turn into comp picks next year in a much deeper class.
DarkSide830
perhaps, that’s a point

Be in prison? Because they exercise their constitutional rights? Dude go read an issue of Mother Goose or watch CNN. We get that you don’t like the President.
nymetsking
Well that was random.

Must be a deleted comment somewhere…
DarkSide830
StrikeFour went on a rant then deleted his comment/had it deleted by one of the site guys.
nymetsking
Rant? Strikefour? That’s a new one. /s
HalosHeavenJJ
Thanks for the explanation.

@ Strike Four
I’d be intrigued if you could elucidate? On many levels. And it seems you have many levels….
Someone just dropped a silent fart as they got off the tube train….

Strike Four deleted his comment before going out for a stroll with a mask and a bag of bricks. Priorities.
DarkSide830
saying he’d listen to mask rules is giving him too much credit
wild bill tetley
You are correct, DarkSide. I apologize for my ignorance.
wordonthestreet
I think Strike Four had the comment deleted for him by MLBTR as they should
vtadave
Pretty sure sure he doesn’t know what “elucidate” means. May need to dial down the vocabulary.
Gwynning
I recommend one syllable words when dealing with him.

What does this have to do with the draft. Just because a owner does not agree with your personal politics doesn’t mean they have no rights and deserve prison.
DarkSide830
and he deleted his comment lol
Dorothy_Mantooth
I was wondering what all that stuff was about…haha
DarkSide830
also i think it would be worth it to baseball to change draft eligibility to allow all college freshman and sophmores ro be drafted. no reason a high school kid should have to wait years if they don’t sign as a HSer.
A'sfaninLondonUK
Agree with that – but as an Englishman don’t know what that would mean to the college. What sort of crowds do they get? What sort of incentives do they give the high schoolers in terms of free education? Cost of coaches, training?
Admittedly not a problem I’m likely to face as a 48 year old eephus pitcher from the Uni of Hertfordshire….

i wolnt protend to be an expert on ths subject, but ive been repeatedly told that most other sports are drug along by the football programs, so imagine they treat them better. the good athletic scholarships probably dont get that good unless you are a real draft-caliber HS player anyway, and most schools that dont focus on baseball probably offer much less. it does seem though that most guys that have strong college commitments however are swayed by a fat bonus and a high draft slot, so its probably about simply improving one’s stock. my take really is that giving kids the chance to go one-and-done can allow kids to show they can play at the next level, a concern that usually causes HS guys to drop. sometimes even that one year can dispell that concern, but these guys are already locked in for 2-3 years then. with successful cases like Pearson you’d have to see the rise of JUCO programs, but i think allowing guys in all schools to leave early would benefit the players.
HalosHeavenJJ
Also not an expert but I do know a bit about the college game. Attendance in the SEC is high pretty much across the board. Coaching is incredible, all of the parks have spin tracking technology. I know a guy who played at Arkansas (Dominic Fletcher) and it is better in the SEC than in most minor leagues.
The Big 12 is probably the only other conference with teams that make money but only a few. The Big 10 has a TV network and games are shown, but let’s be real that network is all about football and the baseball coverage kind of just gets them filler.
Basketball players are allowed to leave after one year and it creates an increase in turnover in high end talent. I doubt it would affect baseball in a huge way, but like the 3 year maturity and development window.
HubcapDiamondStarHalo
London fan – I’d LOVE to hear more about how baseball is perceived in your home country! Really nice to hear there are folks playing on the other side of the pond!
wild bill tetley
Similar to players playing for Team Italy or Netherlands or other countries in the WBC despite not being born there, Great Britain acquires players with lineage from the UK. If a parent or grandparent was born in GB, they can be eligible to play.
bestno5
You might be in high demand as a replacement player with that pitch if owners and players cannot agree to terms.
Dorothy_Mantooth
If you ask me, these are just the first of many to opt out of this draft class. None of the Top 15 round talent is going to sign a $20,000 free agent deal with an MLB team and with college seniors getting an additional year of eligibility from the NCAA, why not go back to school for one more year and see if you can catch lightning in a bottle? Marginal high school players (draft wise anyways) will go to college, let MLB get its house in order for 2021 and go into the draft in 2022 when hopefully things are back to normal. Even some of the first and second round talent could decide to withdraw if they don’t want to defer 80% of their signing bonuses over the next two years. This draft is going to be a complete bust for MLB, but 2021 & 2022 are setting up to be monster talent years. Let’s just hope baseball is still around then ;-).
stan lee the manly
As a Cardinals fan who very rarely sees a pick inside even the top twenty, this could be a really good thing for perennial contenders. Maybe some of these top guys wait a year and the first round next year is completely overflowing with top-level talent. Will be interesting to see what direction these guys go.
ImAdude
Why do you want the Cardinals drafting in the top 20 anyway? So they can waste a pick on Shaun Boyd, Chris Lambert, Pete Kozma, or Brett Wallace? DeWitt and Mo have your#. You’re content with contending. Not winning.
khopper10
They’ve won 2 WS in the last 14 years and often make the playoffs. I never understand this narrative.
DarkSide830
yeah i dont see the anger. the team is always in it and sometimes wins it all. they have a grest young core and seem to be able to develop good players out of nowhere. pulled an odd one drafting Carlson and managed to make it the steal of the draft.
tigerdoc616
Technically no one actually “signs up” for the draft. The draft pool is made up of all eligible players. So nothing to withdraw from. But this signals their intentions to teams. That actually happens every year among HS players so MLB teams don’t waste a pick on them. Becomes more important in this year’s shortened draft. Expect a lot more of these announcements in the days before the draft.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Good point, TigerDoc. It’s especially tricky this year with the fixed slot values. Correct me if I am wrong, but teams are not allowed to pay over slot this year, correct? They can pay under slot, but I don’t believe they will be allowed to go over, and signing bonuses will be deferred 20/40/40. This could drive some of the top talent to opt out of this years draft class too.
Dorothy_Mantooth
Make that $100K year 1, then remaining 50% of bonuses will be paid in 2021 & last 50% in 2022. Bad time to be a top prospect in MLB.
Padres458
You can reclassify.
DarkSide830
im no expert on this, but surely you have to declare? otherwise draft tracker sites like MLB.com has coudlnt have a total list of available players.
HalosHeavenJJ
You made me curious so I went to MLB’s site. Looks like tigerdoc616 is right, players are simply eligible.
mlb.mlb.com/mlb/draftday/rules.jsp
DarkSide830
that is curious. thanks for informing me!
HalosHeavenJJ
I never would’ve thought of it.
mike156
I suspect there will be a lot of these cases. If the prospect has a soft landing anywhere else, I think he’s likely to take it.
thebaseballfanatic
It’s not like we use Crews control much anyway right now.
SalaryCapMyth
I wonder if more prep players will take this course. It seems like the most ideal year to do it. Go to college and experience that anyway. Some of my best memories.
I’ll stop regiling everyone with my days of youth and mediocrity. The only high school player I am interested in is Pete-Crow Armstrong. He projects as a center fielder and that is one light position in the majors, right now. He almost certainly won’t make it that far down the draft though.
Bluemarlin528
Pull the plug on 2020 – it’s been a rough ride…
stgpd
As long as I had a choice I’d pass on this year’s draft too. It’s rigged against players
HalosHeavenJJ
Junior college baseball is going to be stacked with talent next year. Lots of players will go that route so they can be eligible for a real draft next year.
The mid round guys who are college juniors right now will be screwed next year. They’ll have no leverage as they can’t go back to school to play.
Thomas Bliss
As a Sc fan we have known about Fields name being removed for at least a week now. He is the #1 recruit on the Gamecocks list coming in.
ukpadre
It will be interesting to see if there is a season how they do the draft order (use final rankings or keep 2019 order) as 2021 draft will be stacked and would give teams an even bigger incentive than usual to tank. However, with a potentially expanded playoffs in a potential 2020 season, teams will have more chance of making the post-season, keeping more teams in it for longer. Could make for some interesting decisions by teams – if the owners and players can get their heads out of their backsides before that that is!
ifonlydetroitcoulddraft
Good point. I’m wondering how draft order would work in that stacked 21 draft if this season is cancelled. If they keep the same order, maybe Illitch is one of the owners ready to throw in the towel for 2020 lol
Javia
I doubt they will reset the draft order based on this year. Let’s be honest, whoever wins the World Series this year will always have an asterisk next to their title. They will always be the team who won it “that year” so it doesn’t really count. It would be far too tempting for good teams to tank to improve their draft position.
ukpadre
I think it depends who wins it really. If it is a team that has won loads of WS before I don’t think there will be much of an asterisk as it’ll just blend into the other wins and be ‘just another WS’ in a way. If it a team who has never won it before or only a few times, then I don’t think fans will care what you put next to it. People say that there will be an asterisk next to it, but those same people would likely feel differently if their team won it, and would still want their team to win it – everyone wants to win whether it is 1 game or 162.
justacubsfan
A lot of these kids are smart, especially high school students. They’re going to be paid higher salaries from the colleges than the MLB teams based on draft reductions.
dshires4
I wonder if that 2023 draft is going to be just absurdly deep.
66TheNumberOfTheBest
Just curious, anyone still think Kyler Murray made the wrong choice?
astros_fan_84
I am curious how this will effect the game in a few years when these prospects would normally be graduating to the Majors. I’m thinking there might 2023-24 will be light major league ready players.
bravesfan
I’d never pull myself out of consideration. You can still go play college ball if you get drafted. I mean, pulling out kinda has a nice moral ground with it, meaning someone else can now take your spot on such a weird draft year. But even a top 5 rounds draft pick makes some decent money.
ukpadre
It depends. If it’s your last year of eligibility and you get drafted you can’t not sign and then enter again next year. However, from what I understand, if it is your last year of eligibility, you can pull out this year and get an extension to re-enter next season. If that was the case and I thought I might be a 5th-10th round pick who would have to settle for a max of $20k this year, I’d certainly pull out and aim for a bigger payday in 2021 instead.
