The D-backs on Monday announced their initial player pool for the 2020 season. Player pools can contain up to 60 players, and only players in a team’s pool will be eligible to participate in summer training camp or regular/postseason games. Teams are free to change the makeup of the pools as they see fit, but once a team’s pool reaches 60 players, a player must be removed (released, traded, waived, etc.) in order to make a new addition. That player becomes ineligible to return to that same team in 2020.
Not all players within a team’s pool are ticketed for MLB playing time, of course. Most teams will include well-regarded but still far-off prospects as a means of getting them training reps with no intention of running them onto a major league diamond this season. A comprehensive review of 2020’s unique set of rules can be found here.
Here are the 60 players in the Diamondbacks’ initial pool (* indicates player not on 40-man roster)…

Thought Dbacks might have Yasmany Tomas on this initial list as a potential DH, then release him, hoping someone would claim him.

Shows how little they value the tank when they have Cron, Lamb, and others who are better uses of the DH. People don’t realize how much that signing has massively hurt the franchise because they can’t afford to waste that kind of money and still be consistently good. But Hazen has made the right moves to steer the ship through difficult terrain.

Also, surprised #1 Prospect, Kristian Robinson, isn’t listed! Wonder why not?

My gut feeling is that there may be travel issues keeping him from coming to the states. I could be wrong though. I agree that it’s puzzling to include Carroll and Thomas but not Robinson

I don’t recall where, but I did read that he had issues returning home to the Bahamas and ST facilities were open to those who were incapable of going home. So there’s a good chance that he is working on development without having to be added to the 60-Man.
Lets Go DBacks
Comments on the AZSnakePit mention he never went to the Bahamas and is already at the ST complex where he can get (limited) training instructions. So there is no need to put him on the 60 player list.

Why is Yasmany Tomas not invited? Everyone knows he can’t play the field but maybe he can bat with the DH. He only got 3-4 at bats last year. The Dbacks really hate him! What’s to lose by having him in the practice squad?

Because of the defensive issues, because they’ve got much better candidates to try out at DH (Cron, Beer, Young, etc.), and because they’d rather give time and development ability to younger players and those with more team control instead of an overpaid flop who’s a defensive dud and is gone after this year.

Their top draft pick made the list, showing what they think of him. Be cool if he got a few big league innings this year. Glad to see Gary’s kid, Dalton Varsho. He could be an interesting option as 3rd catcher, especially having the DH to occasionally get an extra lefty power bat in there, and he isn’t bad in the outfield.

Varsho is going to be a stud!
Probably a great long term fit in the 2 hole.
