The Cardinals have signed international amateur free agent Edwin Nunez for $525K, according to Ben Badler of Baseball America. This deal comes as part of the extended 2019-20 international signing period, which will run until October 15 and was re-opened again on Friday when the transactions freeze was lifted.
Like all other business in baseball, the international market was halted by the league’s COVID-19 shutdown, meaning Nunez had to wait a little longer to sign with his first big league organization. Nunez’s entry into the pros had already been delayed a year, as the league declared him ineligible to sign during the 2018-19 international prospect period due to a discrepancy with his given age. Nunez became eligible in April, and is now listed as 18 years old.
Despite his late entry into the signing period, Badler writes that Nunez “had emerged as one of the top pitching prospects in the 2019-20 class.” A hard-throwing righty from the Dominican Republic, Nunez already has a high-90s fastball that has hit the 100mph threshold on occasion. It isn’t out of the question that even more velocity could be unlocked, given Nunez’s young age and the potential for more bulk added to his 6’3″, 185-pound frame. Beyond that big fastball, Nunez also has a largely untested changeup and a somewhat “inconsistent” curveball.

When will he be in the majors the soonest?

Welcome to the St Louis Cardinals’ franchise.

Nice work Cardinals. If he has any control I am jealous.

My problem is they sign great players like this, then block them cause you gotta get back at the Cubs by signing Dexter Fowler then as a byproduct trading such talent as Arozerena or Mercado for unproven talent like Justin Willaims. Maybe these deals pan out in the long run, but right now they leaving this bitter flavor in my mouth especially with how much Fowler is getting paid vs the WAR Mercado put up for millions less. I like Fowler, but damn that was some bad baseball management
makaio6
Nunez is a pitcher. How do outfielders block him?
wild bill tetley
It was just an example. Could have also said Molina for Carson Kelly, Matt Carpenter for anyone. He’s just expressing concern over how developed players could be blocked by a bonehead move at the top level.
andremets
Molina is a hall of gamer. Carson has a long way to go. Mercado? He was “proven” when the cards moved him? Really? He’s got a long way to go too.
Michael Chaney
Mercado was having a big season in the minors and looked to be turning a corner when they traded him. Then he raked in spring training and the minors and was a solid everyday player in center for the Indians. I don’t really know what you’re getting at.
Michael Chaney
To add: I agree with what you said about the other two players you mentioned, but I remember the Mercado trade being hated by pretty much every Cardinals fan from the moment it was made and he was pretty close to the majors when they moved him
jlmini10
The Mercado trade was not hated by anywhere close to everyone. We traded a good defensive center fielder with a light bat (95 wrc+, 96 ops+) for a high ceiling young talent who has been crushing the minor leagues as well in John Torres. The cardinals basically spit out players like Mercado every year easily. What they have lacked lately are superstars, and Mozeliak traded an average player that we didn’t need and turned him into someone who could be a great player down the road. I just don’t get why people are so upset about Mercado getting traded away, he hasn’t done anything to show that he’s any more than an average player.
Javia
A team will carry 5 starters, 13 pitchers total. At least 3-5 of those will be below average. Every team in mlb has space for more good pitching.
wild bill tetley
I guess you can’t read or understand the word “could”.
There is zero question the Cards have thrown some money around, deserving of some ridicule. They are not absolved from criticism.

I make that Mercado trade 10 times out of 10. They were overloaded with major league ready outfielders and they trade for higher star potential than they traded away, period. Mercado has only a slim chance of being anything more than what he’s already shown, which is average
hollidayfever
Ironically, Bader is a far better defender and likely a much better bat than Mercado. Connor Capel had a higher prospect pedigree fwiw to Oscar, but Jhon Torres is the upside bet in that deal. Mercado would be behind Bader, Tyler O’Neill, Lane Thomas, Dylan Carlson, etc for playing time anyway. He’s not that good.
stan lee the manly
100% correct. It’s easy to call the trade a failure when only one player is in the majors. When Torres turns out to be better than Mercado, it will be pretty obvious the Cardinals made a good move. And if he’s not? They traded a mediocre, unneeded player for the potential for much more than that. Same trade teams make every year.
stan lee the manly
Because draft picks always turn out right? The front office had the foresight to see that Mercado was not living up to his potential and moved him while he still had value. Are we really going to bash them because they are unable to see the future for every one of their draft picks right when they are drafted? That’s a pretty absurd way to evaluate. If Torres has the major league impact they expect, then that second round pick has value DESPITE an underperforming pick in that slot. That points to a good front office, not a bad one.
Every single draft pick has the potential to fail, even number one picks. Every front office drafts failures every year. The front offices that can determine the failures before the players lose value and capitalize on it are the ones that succeed.

Look at all of the good young players (Gorman /Edmon), and even top free agents a declining Matt Carpenter has cost the Cardinals over the past 3-4 seasons…..Matt was the spark plug of the Cardinals years ago!! How Carpenter went….so did the Cardinals!!! Past his prime…and I understand the Cardinals and fans devotion to Carpenter in his hay day, but even Willie Mays tarnished his status and hurt his team but wanting to play past his prime and useful days. Carp should be a useful bench player and role model for the Cardinals future players. Not a starter.
stan lee the manly
Gorman just turned 20 lol, he was NOWHERE near the majors last year. And still isn’t. Edman came out of absolutely nowhere and shocked the baseball world, including the Cardinals I might add, with how well he played. And now has all of a fraction of a season under his belt. DeWitt doesn’t pay for the vast majority of top free agents unless it’s a special case. Carpenter hasn’t blocked anybody, and will continue to not block anybody with the DH this year.

Love this signing the more pitching right now the better for STL. You always have to keep your eye on the GMO of this team though. He has a tendency to sign a Name to just sign a Name.. Extend a Name for the sake of extending a Name. Our payroll right now is being eaten up by players 32-35+. I have no trust in the GMO. He lived for a while off the back of TL and Walt’s players. It is time for him to build a team for the future. He can not do it!!
mrperkins
Lived off Walt’s back? He’s been gone 15 years and pretty much gutted St Louis farm system on the way out. It was built back up by Jeff Luhnow for several years. I don’t get the hate for Mozeliak. He can’t go on a crazy spending spree if DeWitt won’t let him. He generally makes good decisions without driving the market up. Yes, I know, Fowler….but I can overlook that deal when I think of him dumping Allen Craig’s contract on the Red Sox for a fantastic year of Lackey at 100k$ and taking the draft pick when he left and turning it into Dylan Carlson.

For real
Moz was literally the guy who drafted Pujols and Molina, and took the last sub .500 Cardinals and has kept them over .500 for 12 straight years, with a WS, with multiple NLCS appearances.
People fail to see how much Mo had to do with the development of the 2011 Cardinals and beyond and the amount of consistent success the franchise has had the last two decades. He’s been integral to the team. Every front office executive in charge for this long is going to have bad moves, but fortunately, his haven’t been that frequent.
hollidayfever
Lol Mo is a far better GM than Jocketty in a far more difficult era to stand out from the crowd, considering universal access and utilization of analytics. Jocketty never developed prospects with any regularity and only got lucky by fleecing a few trades for generational players (i.e. Edmonds and Rolen). Also got lucky having Pujols drop and the JD Drew/Philly unpleasantness. He was good for his time, but his way was not sustainable if not for the handful of lucky moves detailed above.
Bradleyd222
Looking forward to him striking out a lot of Cubs at Wrigley… 21Ks in 9 innings sounds great! That Wood be outstanding…. some/trolls won’t get this still
Melchez
Curious to see who Yoelqui Cespedes signs with. 22 year old younger brother of Yoenis. Guy has great speed and has added strength. He’s the top prospect of international free agents. These guys are usually 16 17 years old. Cespedes could probably suit up and play right away.

Do teams still have spending restrictions on these kids if they went over the previous year, or did they change that?
