Here’s a look at the latest draft signings from around the game. Unless otherwise specified, the news comes courtesy of Jim Callis of MLB.com…
- The Mariners wrapped up their 2020 draft signings by inking right-hander Connor Phillips on Monday, Ryan Divish of the Seattle Times reports. Phillips, the 64th pick, signed for full slot value of $1,050,300. The Mariners acquired the selection they used on Phillips from the Brewers during the offseason in a trade centering on catcher Omar Narvaez. Phillips, previously with McLennan Community College in Waco, Texas, entered the draft as MLB.com’s 94th-ranked prospect available. The 19-year-old is capable of reaching the high 90s with his fastball, though he’ll need to improve his offspeed offerings to realize his potential, per MLB.com.
- The Pirates have signed fourth-round righty Jack Hartman for $60K (Twitter link). That sums checks in well below the $538,200 value of Hartman’s selection, No. 108. The ex-Appalachian State hurler pumps high-90s heat, possesses a high-spin curveball and is on track to be a reliever in the majors, Callis writes.
- Brewers fifth-rounder Hayden Cantrelle has agreed to a bonus worth $300K (Twitter link). Cantrelle’s pick, No. 151, carried a recommended value of $353,700. The former Louisiana-Lafayette shortstop’s stock dropped in an abbreviated final season in college, in which the switch-hitter batted .136/.320/.237 in 17 games, but Baseball America still rated him as the draft’s 138th-best prospect.
- The Diamondbacks have secured fifth-round righty Brandon Pfaadt for $100K, easily below the $360,800 slot value of the 149th choice (on Twitter). Pfaadt posted a 4.09 ERA with 10.7 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 92 1/3 innings at Bellarmine University from 2018-20.

Why did the Pirates 4th rounder agree to sign for $60K? I wonder if he was not ranked in the Top 200 players and was looking at a $20K free agent deal before the Pirates agreed to draft and sign him for 3X that amount? Then again, they would have waited until the 5th round to draft him if that was the case. Something smells fishy with this deal; the kid’s slot value was $538K!

Probably to save that amount to allocate to another signing from previous rounds. This gives them about 500k to pay someone else overslot

I think Dorothy’s question was more along the lines of why he signed for that amount, not why they gave him so little.

Because that’s The value of the slot not of that particular player. He was not going to get picked that high so he was looking at a $20,000 signing bonus as an UDFA so they pay him over $20,000 so he wins they save money is on the slot so they use that savings to work another drafted player so they can sign him above the slot value.

Must’ve had a deal in place before the draft where the alternative was not being drafted and signing for $20k.

As the other posters have said, this allows them to allocate more dollars to another draft pick.
Baseball America was the only major publication to rank him and that was at 286th overall. His ranking would put him well outside of the 5th round.

Pirates 4th rounder is a college senior, with next to no leverage.
They’ve spent 5.615 M of their 11.155 allowed slots
They still need to sign: round 1CBA, with a slot value of 2.310 M
round 2, with a slot value 1.690 M
round3 witha slot value of .780 M
So if everybody signs for slot, they saved about a million bucks. BUT (and it’s a huge “but”) their 2nd pick, Jared Jones, is a high school pitcher, who likely is going to get more than the 1.690 M.
It looks like they’ll spend their entire allocation.

When us the deadline to sign? Is anyone expected to not sign?
