Several more draft picks from the second through fifth rounds have agreed to deals with their first-ever major league organizations. Here are the latest updates…
- The Cardinals announced the signing of second-round pick Masyn Winn on Wednesday, Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch relays. Winn will earn $2.1MM, which is above the $1,338,500 recommended slot value of his pick (No. 54), per Jim Callis of MLB.com. Winn, a Texas high school shortstop/right-hander who committed to Arkansas before the draft, is a legitimate prospect on both ends, according to Callis.
- The Red Sox have reached a deal on a $1.75MM bonus with third-round choice Blaze Jordan, according to Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com. It’s a well-above-slot pact for Jordan, a high school third baseman from Mississippi whose pick (89) came with a recommended value of $667,900.
- The Rangers have inked a pair of picks, third-rounder Tekoah Roby and fifth-rounder Thomas Saggese, TR Sullivan of MLB.com tweets. Roby, a high school righty from Florida who went 86th overall, signed for $775K (recommended slot value: $699,700). Despite coming off the board much later at 145, Saggese received $800K – easily above the $375,200 slot. Saggese is a high school shortstop from California.
- The Rockies announced the signings of third-round left-hander Sam Weatherly (Clemson) and fifth-round shortstop Jack Blomgren (Michigan). Financial details aren’t yet known in either case. Weatherly’s pick (81) came with a slot value of $755,300, while Blomgren’s (140) was assessed at $394,300.
- Mets fifth-rounder Eric Orze landed a deal for just $20K, Callis reports. His pick, No. 150, was worth a much more lucrative $357,100. As Callis notes, it’s easy to root for Orze, who has overcome cancer twice. On the mound, the righty from the University of New Orleans offers “an above-average, 92-95 mph fastball, an average slider and an above-average splitter,” Baseball America writes.

Regarding Orze (and others), I thought teams were required to offer 40% of the slot value. Did the MLBPA bargain that away from amateurs?
nymetsking
I think that 40% offer is the minimum offer they’re required to extend if they want to receive a compensatory pick the folding following draft for not signing that player.
mlbfan
Also, there is no compensation for failing to sign a draft pick after the third round.
Manfredsajoke
Mets this is not honorable. 357K slot value and you sign the guy for 20k? Sad.
dugmet
You dont seem to understand this is common practice for all MLB teams — to overdraft a player snd sign him for much less than slot in order to move the savings to another player.
Manfredsajoke
I do understand how the money works in the draft process. That is just mathematically a HUGE disparity.
njbirdsfan
And he didn’t have to accept it either.
whynot 2
You don’t seem to understand much about the draft. He was not very highly ranked, 497 out of the 500 prospects according to BA, so getting drafted in the 5th round was a surprise to everyone including to him. Securing a 20k bonus was a good outcome for someone with his draft profile

Blaze sounds like a solid choice. I bet he’d love Cora like every other RS players does. Now if only they could bring the Brockstar back next yr.
case7187
Cora had nothing to do with the minor league system and from most reporter he didn’t cheat like he did in Huston at least not franchise wide like them
dugmet
Blaze has one plus-tool with lots of swing and miss potential.
Michael Chaney
I’m never really a fan of guys who only have power (especially in high school), because more often than not they don’t hit enough to tap into it. I’d rather pick someone with a good hit tool that’s capable of growing into power later on.
Patrick OKennedy
Lynn Henning is reporting that the Tigers have signed No 1 overall pick Spencer Torkelson for $1,000 ABOVE slot. That would be the first time that a No 1 overall signs for above slot money. Scott Boras is gooooood.
That would complete the Tigers signings for this season.

Was (selfishly) hoping Winn would make it to campus, but congratulations to him. That’s an unbelievable amount of money and too much to turn down.
kscheer
Same. This just continues to fuel my forever burning hate of the St. Louis Cardinals, and St Louis in general.

I’m guessing you’re a Rangers fan? I’m sorry my friend, I feel your pain. We have a family friend who’s been with the Rangers for 30 something years, so 2011 was tough to watch.

The Red Sox signed Blaze Jordan the slot money as if he was a Top 45 pick in the draft.and not the 89th pick of the draft which he was.
Michael Chaney
The reason he fell was because of his price tag and not his talent. The Red Sox saved money with their first rounder, so they were able to take him there and pay him what he was expected to get.
NY_Yankee
It seems like the Yankees are the only team that has signed nobody. I wonder if they are going to actually punt the draft?
pinballwizard1969
They have until Aug. 1st to sign the player(s). I’m pretty sure they will sign the 3 they drafted in the regular draft. For the record they have signed 9 of the undrafted players. For the record only a small percentage of the 160 drafted players have been signed.
MLB-what-ifs
Many times teams wait and announce most if not all the signings at once

And the first overall pick in the 2021 draft, Austin Martin.
jaysfansince1977
Dream on Againigan, Jays have enough money to pay him up to and over 7 mil, way over slot and he also stated a willingness to play with Bichette who is a friend and also ex-teammate! Austin Martin will be a Blue Jay ya can bank on that!!
Againigan
The Jay’s don’t have enough to pay him the slot value of the 1st or 2nd pick which is what Martin was expecting. If you watched the draft, he clearly he wasn’t happy being drafted 5th by the Jays and there wasn’t even a trace of a smile. If the Jay’s had plenty of money and he wants to play with ex-teamates and friends in the Jay’s organization then a deal would have already been done. I’m a Jay’s fan too, born and raised but the only one dreaming here is you.
jaysfansince1977
They do not have to pay him 1st or 2nd slot value he went 5th, in his interview he was not acting dissappointed, the Jays can go up to 5% over their draft pool before they lose a draft pick they have a bit over 6 Mil left of that draft pool and Martin is asking for 7 Mil. When dealing with Boras nothing is signed right away! and quite frankly being a life long Jays fan does not mean you know what you are talking about!
Againigan
Sorry bud but you clearly dont know what you’re talking about. YouTube the 2020 MLB draft and watch it. Austin Martin is quite visibly upset and it doesn’t matter if he was picked 5th, 10th or 30th. He was projected to go top two and that’s the money he is expecting.
