The National League appears likely to implement the designated hitter in 2020 — much to the chagrin of many fans — suddenly giving 15 clubs the potential to bulk up their lineup with another non-pitcher bat. Several teams already have logical in-house options to fill that spot. However, there are a handful of yet-unsigned position players who’ll welcome the seemingly forthcoming influx of DH spots as they look to get another chance at the big league level. Let’s run through some still-available names…
- Yasiel Puig (29 years old): Puig was still a perfectly fine defensive right fielder last season, grading out as average via Defensive Runs Saved, Ultimate Zone Rating and Outs Above Average. A team may not look at him as a full-time DH because of that, but a club with an already-set outfield could now switch a more defensively challenged option to DH and slot Puig into right field. Or, Puig could simply rotate through DH and the outfield corners on a new NL club. The Giants have been oft-connected to Puig and have a piecemeal mix of options in the outfield. At the very least, an added DH spot wouldn’t hurt his chances of landing in San Francisco (or anywhere else in the NL).
- Jose Bautista (39): Joey Bats generated some chatter this winter when word got out that he was contemplating a return as a two-way player. The former home run champ set the record straight last month, indicating that while he did throw some bullpen sessions with friend/former teammate Marcus Stroman this winter and would welcome the opportunity, he’s more focused on a return as a hitter. Bautista’s glovework declined quite a bit in his late 30s, but he walked at a 14 percent clip and posted a .168 ISO in his final two seasons in 2017-18. He’s kept himself in shape — could he have one more run left in him?
- Mark Trumbo (34): Knee problems torpedoed Trumbo’s 2019 season and much of his 2018 campaign as well, though he did return late last year to appear in a dozen games with the Orioles. While 2019 was a lost season, the slugger hit .261/.313/.452 in 358 plate appearances in 2018 (105 wRC+, 108 OPS+). Trumbo has never been much of an OBP threat, but he has massive power from the right side — evidenced by an MLB-best 47 homers in 2016. He was open about his uncertain baseball future back in November, but 15 new DH slots could give him an unexpected opportunity.
- Melky Cabrera (35): The Melk Man is still hoping to play another couple seasons, but deteriorating glovework has become increasingly difficult to overlook. That said, the switch-hitter hasn’t batted lower than .273 in the past decade, and his contact skills generally make him a source of a respectable OBP even though he doesn’t walk that much. Cabrera’s .280/.313/.399 slash with the Pirates last year was below-average on the whole (88 OPS+, 85 wRC+), but he was an average or better hitter in the three preceding seasons. Melky carried an .807 OPS into the All-Star break last year, but he hit just .231/.257/.306 down the stretch as his role shrunk. To his credit, he struck out at just a 10.3 percent clip last year.
- Hanley Ramirez (36): HanRam’s comeback attempt with the Indians last year was a bust. He homered in his second game of the season but went deep just once more, posting an ugly .184/.298/.327 slash in 57 plate appearances before being cut loose. Ramirez underwent shoulder surgery last summer, revealing that he’d been plagued by shoulder pain for several years and making clear that he hoped to play in 2020. He played in the Dominican Winter League this offseason, hitting .273/.298/.418 in 57 plate appearances. Ramirez has a lot to prove, but maybe an NL club would take a flier in a rebooted Spring/Summer Training and hope to catch lightning in a bottle.
- Lucas Duda (34): Nothing went right for Duda last year, although the Royals still gave him 119 plate appearances. In that time, he posted a disastrous .171/.252/.324 slash, and he wasn’t much better in Triple-A, hitting .202/.281/.303 in 114 PAs between the affiliates for Kansas City and Atlanta. Duda showed solid power while bouncing around the league in the two seasons prior, hitting .228/.318/.482 with 44 home runs in 253 games spread across five teams — including a 30-homer effort in 2017. Last year didn’t inspire any confidence, but he’s only 34 and could perhaps operate as a platoon option or lefty bench bat.
There are still some other unsigned players. Scooter Gennett never latched on with a team this winter. Tim Beckham remains unsigned, though he still has to serve the final 32 games of an 80-game PED ban. Russell Martin is a free agent. It’s doubtful that any of those players would markedly impact a team’s DH picture or see his market improved by the new presence of a DH (although any could draw increased interest as a bench option by virtue of expanded rosters). It’s also possible that some veterans on minor league deals could opt out or be cut loose once training camp resumes, thus entering the mix for potential DH work in the NL. Carlos Gonzalez, for instance, was reportedly unlikely to make the Mariners’ roster.
Most clubs will probably prefer to handle the DH spot internally rather than hand out more money at a time when revenue is already being slashed by the pandemic stoppage. But for the non-Puig veterans here who are simply looking for one more chance to revive their careers, a sizable commitment wouldn’t be expected anyhow. Whether it’s one final run for Joey Bats (with a bullpen appearance or two?), a Hanley Homecoming in Miami, a Trumbo resurgence or any number of other scenarios, there could be some fun storylines to follow.
Stop making me take the survey.
Ahhh, no one’s making ya, buddy! You’re a free Monty!
Teams would still skip almost all of these players and just use the DH more widespread as the crutch it had become.
You can stop eating and take the survey fattie!!!
Why are you such a DB?
Who? Who does not want to wear the ribbon?!
Klentak go get Gennett. he’s the guy.
What a remarkably stupid hot take. Go pound off to aoc
You are the most toxic commentor in this place. Stick to baseball
Open up I’ll give ya something toxic!!!
That’s what your mom said.
I’d pound off to AOC if she was further to the left.
Pounding off to aoc isn’t nearly as bad as worthless pounding off to Monty’s comments. Worthless is like a little school girl hoping their crush notices them.
Lucas Duda? Cmon!
Outside of Puig, this is a truly brutal list.
Trumbo could still have a few good seasons in the tank, but I mostly agree this is grasping at straws, realistically puig is by the far the best player with all things considered, would be nice to have him in left so Schwarber could become his destined DH
Wow…
The Cubs absolutely would have zero interest in Trumbo.
First of all, he is a butcher in the field. The last time he played the outfield he notched a -7 DRS in a whopping 160 innings. Schwarber had -3 in 1100.
Second, the Cubs are stacked at DH options. Schwarber can DH and Happ can play LF, Contreras will DH when he isn’t catching, Souza is an option as well. So is Caratini if the Cubs are facing a southpaw and he isn’t catching.
Guy said Puig in LF not Trumbo
My trade targets based on being unbelievably bad defenders and blocked by an everyday DH, but potentially good everyday DHs on new teams:
Nick Williams, Christin Stewart, Dwight Smith Jr, Jesse Winker and Domingo Santana.
I think a NL DH would open the door for more young international players rather than increase the chances of old guys getting another shot. Asia in particular has several bat only guys who aren’t quite AL DH level but are still good enough if there’s more jobs and these guys would take 2-3 million while a Joey Bats type would want 5-7 million.
But I was introduced as a way of keeping the Joey Batts playing. Not as a way of getting no glove goon in the line up
so your saying give the jobs to international players? Rather than promote from with in. I m sure those minor league players want a shot!
I’d agree, Andy. Puig won’t get signed by the Giants this year especially with the new DH in the NL, as the Giants have Hunter Pence who raked in the DH slot for the Rangers last year. I bet he’ll be our primary DH.
Daniel Vogelbach! Dipoto might have the market now to at least get something at all even if it’s some generic middle relief prospect. Heck if you cover your eyes you can call him a 1B. And who knows, he might be able to hit for more than a month at a time.
Why in the world would he trade Vogelbach for a middle relief pitchef? Keep Vogelbach. Relievers are a dime a dozen.
Vogelbach is also young and has what, four years of control left? Monumentally dumb take
It’s not “monumentally dumb” to ever suggest Jerry DiPoto would make a trade of any player. It’s actually more “monumentally dumb” to suggest otherwise.
Except that Vogey is DiPoto’s favorite player!
Evan White is their guy at first. And he should play everyday. Unless they can get some young pitching, preferably starters, might as well keep Vogey.
Quit with the surveys about to delete this app
just dont take a survey then …
That’s all fine and good but it pops up EVERYTIME I open any article. No opt out, no encompassing declination. Ridiculous.
… use the desktop site.
No.
You contribute nothing! Stuff more food in your face retardo!!!
The site really needs to ban the IP of this person. It’s turning into the old ESPN comment section
Awww you got triggered! No one cares!!!
Hey Worthless drop, I’m not one to cry and whine over some internet troll, but you sir are a complete waste of time. If you want to trigger somebody, you are at the wrong place. We talk baseball. Not crap. And for the next (however long you do this) we will still talk baseball, not insults, baseball. It’s called MLBTR for a reason, and until you get banned, expect to be ignored. Good day.
You have to understand WorthlessDrop, he gets less exercise than you do because he doesn’t work the glory hole in the men’s room at the mall like you do. But that also means he gets less protein in his diet than you do, so I guess it kinda evens out.
Yes ignored! Except you replied! How stupid are you?!
This is this persons like 4th or 5th account probably. Such a loser.
Someone with an IQ score that classifies them as having borderline mental disability is calling other people stupid? Is that you Donald?
What are these surveys I’ve never encountered one on here
same
If you use the app, when you click on this article it redirects you to surveymonkey. Very similar to intrusive popup ads.
I don’t complain about content around here but this is clearly intrusive so I am in favor of not forcing surveys like this (and I’m a desktop user so this doesn’t affect me very much)
I’m on the app; I’ve never seen a survey.
Demand your money back!
This is a dumb comment, too. We’ve gotten free, top tier content from mlbtr for YEARS, literally over a decade, and you can’t take a few seconds to help them continue doing so during these uncertain times? I’ve yet to see one, but the choice is East
When I saw the title of the article I immediately thought of HanRam. Glad to see him on the list.
I don’t care if there is or isn’t a DH in baseball. I just want a world where we don’t have to hear about it anymore. It’s entirely inconsequential to the entertainment value of the sport.
“In a world…..”
I’d argue it is consequential to the enjoyment of the sport. I live in a market with both AL and NL franchises and the presence or lack of the DH is obvious in many cases.
There’s nothing more pointless than a 2 out hit by the 7 or 8 hitter in an NL game. You know there’s an automatic out coming up and no run will be scored. If you like offense, and MLB says they want to increase contact and scoring, this is a common issue.
Yes I love versatile players that move around the NL diamond during double switches, the occasional bits of strategy, but overall I find myself annoyed that a scoring chance was taken away by a guy who hasn’t hit since high school but is somehow expected to do so at the MLB level.
I’d argue a 2 out hit by the #8 hitter is indeed valuable in that you wouldn’t have to have your pitcher leading off the next inning. That’s actually one of the finer points that NL fans find charming.
And, really, how much of an actual scoring chance is it to have a guy on first and a typical #9 hitter up?
^this
thats why we should stop arguing about it and leave it as it is. dont fix what isnt broken.
You should also stop liking guys!!!
Seriously, how haven’t you been banned yet?
The Reds could probably benefit from the DH. They have a log jam in the outfield.
Being able to interchange Winker and Castellanos at DH and left field would really help them.
i mean they should just keep Castellanos there full-time
When did you first go full tard?
If it was possible to make me hate the idea of an NL DH any more, this list would’ve been mission accomplished. I despise the NL adopting the DH however. Way to ruin the game!
Well AO then put on your top hat, get in your horse drawn buggy and ride away…..
Exactly, weird way to put it, but exactly. If you can’t stand a change to a game which in many regards has been called “stone age’, never changing with the times, then maybe you should be open to some change because it looks like they are finally starting to do so.
Here’s a bit of irony for y’all. The wheels on that buggy would still be round, as wheels have been since the stone age. Why haven’t they changed? They work, and there isn’t a need- just like baseball.
If this ends up a permanent change, well, maybe I will leave baseball behind. I won’t be alone. The game won’t collapse, I know. It’s fine. Those of you who want to push this change so hard though can simply pay the higher ticket prices to make up for the money they lose from us. Enjoy!!
this ^
AO, I am not pushing hard for this, but you have to now that MLB is a dying sport. They have tried over the past 2 years to make game time a priority to try and get their ratings up because they think attention span is what is losing fans. Just be happy they are making changes to try and IMPROVE the game in a different way. What if your horse and buggy was pulled by a horse that was on steroids, and your buggy went farther then it ever could before. It got better. IMO I do not think adding a dh to the N.L is the end all be all of rule changes, but it is a start. Maybe next they’ll try to market players more, I think the MLB players league the last few weeks helped that because we felt like we saw a more personal side of guy like Gallo, Snell, and Lux. Just be happy Manfred is trying to improve the game instead of let it keep crashing. BTW, try to be more open minded about changes to the game, who knows, you might like it…
I’m frankly ambivalent about the NL adopting a DH, but it seems to me that anyone willing to stop watching the sport simply because half the games won’t force a weak hitter to bat is just looking for a reason to walk away.
The game isn’t failing though. Does it capture everyone’s attention? No, probably not. If the goal is to make changes to cater to the ADD demographic, then you’re going to alienate another demographic. Isn’t that simply chasing your own tail?
Your veiled reference to the steroid era isn’t a great point of context, either. I’ve never been one to crush those guys because there was no rule against it at the time. In the same breath, I wouldn’t trumpet it as something to be celebrated. There is so much controversy surrounding it that the reigning HR king might (likely) never make the HOF.
I know they say change is the only constant, but not all change results in progress.
I wasn’t trying to reference the steroid era lol, even though it definatley came off that way… I was just trying to make a point that your buggy could be even better lol.
When I say failing, I mean the ratings are falling… No simple rule change can fix that, and I could talk for hours about what MLB should do to make the game more popular, and no I am not trying to cater to the “ADD” crowd. I’ll keep this short, but I still might have to make a TLDR section… MLB, maybe the richest team sport in the world, does not know how to market. Don’t stick your only weekly game on national television at 3:00 o’clock! Make it 7:00 p.m on a Saturday! People will watch! Market players! Instead of saying “Phillies Vs Angels on Fox” say “Mike Trout and the Angels take on Bryce Harper and the Phillies in America’s game of the week!”. One more thing that a lot of people don’t say is this: Don’t let Joe Buck do the Playoffs. IMO you should let the team’s local broadcast crew be able to call the games if their team makes the playoffs (contracts permitting and whatnot). But you know how much more exciting it would be to see a team’s local announcer call their WS games? As for the WS, home games = home announcer, that simple. A few little changes, and I bet you would see a difference in ratings.
Baseball has the best talent we have seen in a while, and I feel like Manfred is wasting it…
Let’s be fair, you want to explore that ‘personal side’ of every guy you meet!!!
The DH has existed for 47 years and youre STILL mad about it!!!
Russell Martin will surely find a team as a 3rd catcher with expanded rosters
It’s too bad Matt Carpenter can’t hit much any more. DH was his last resort at another contract.
Really not impressed with this list at all guys!
Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your butt with guys!!!
Seems like Cespedes will likely be the Mets everyday DH
Don’t understand why a shortened season provides an incentive to add the DH. As a Dodger fan, I’m ok with it – Muncy, Taylor, Pedersen or Hernandez adds another good bat to the crowded line-up and would be better than 80% of the rest of the field.
Dodgers will love this. Lots of in house candidates, versatile players who can move around the diamond when pinch hitters or runners are needed. Plays perfectly into their team.
Can the Pirates just take the automatic out and skip the DH?
He’s already on Arizona but Yasmany Tomás was tearing it up during Spring Training. He could be a good fit for the DH in Arizona.
Technically a guy like Scooter could be directly affected by the NL DH. A team like the Rockies could sign Scoot to move Daniel Murphy or Ian Desmond to DH duty.
Blackmon is one of the worst defensive OF along with Castellanos, both should be full time DH’s.
I love Blackmon, I think this will help him a lot if they decide to stick him at DH.
Rather them play Sam Hilliard
Now this. Cheapen everything. Take out strategy out of the game should benefit a lot of robot managers.
Baseball isnt a strategy game, its see ball, hit ball
you yokels are the ones muddying up a simple game in the first place. you deserve this.
I think your post makes my point. I guess if you don’t understand it, then drink some bleach or inject some hand sanitizer.
what on earth fo you mean? the game was great before the DH. if im honest the change will probably be little, but that’s why i want it to stay the same – dont fix what isnt broken.
Quick list of the worst defensive OF in MLB from 2017 to present by UZR (min 100 innings):
Adam Jones – could help as a NL DH somewhere, maybe back to AZ?
Nick Castellanos – moves to Reds DH?
Charlie Blackmon – moves to Rockies DH?
Trey Mancini – probably goes to 1B, with Davis going to DH
Domingo Santana – Indians are currently showing him as their LF, but he could help a lower budget NL team with a DH spot.
Melky Cabrera – helps any NL DH spot
Shin-soo Choo – will probably everyday DH for Texas
Teoscar Hernandez – Blue Jays currently showing him as their everyday RF, with Derek Fisher as the DH. I could see them bumping Fisher for Hernandez at DH and going after Puig.
Matt Kemp – jumps right to the head of the queue for Marlins DH duties
JD Martinez -will everyday DH for Red Sox
Dexter Fowler – solves the Cardinals OF logjam beautifully. Fowler to everyday DH.
Jesse Winker – with the Reds in the Puig market and Castellanos a lock for the everyday DH role, Winker becomes quality trade bait. Like Castellanos, he too, is borderline unplayable in LF. Reds will dodge a bullet if they play no games with both those butchers in the OF.
Khris Davis – will everyday DH for the Athletics
Austin Jackson – borderline elite defender his first 3 seasons, then fell off a cliff. Can he still hit? He’s only 33 and still a FA looking for a team.
Dwight Smith Jr. – he’s way down on the Orioles current depth chart, even moreso if you include Mancini playing there against his bad metrics. Trade piece.
Christin Stewart – blocked by Miggy at DH, he becomes another interesting trade piece
Nick Williams – is behind a long line of veterans (Bruce, Harrison, Walker) who will be splitting DH time, he’s another DH piece if you believe in his bat (his AAA numbers last year were very good, .955 OPS).
Jose Martinez – Rays DH mix.
tl;dr NL teams would be wise to check in on the trade price on Nick Williams, Christin Stewart, Dwight Smith Jr, Jesse Winker and Domingo Santana.
I personally like the DH in the N.L because it opens up more possibilities too see aging players get a second chance. I said yesterday about what if a fan favorite for an N.L team got terrible defensively, would you rather stick the fan favorite on the bench, or put him at DH? Of course people harped on me about it because apparently nobody is open to change now.
Trey Mancini has cancer. Adam Jones is in Japan. Dwight Smith is the Orioles starting left fielder.
That’s just the issue w/ your post on current or very recent orioles players.
I thought Bautista only chance was with an NL team. 1 out left pitcher on the mound needs to come out but the pitchers spot leads off the next Inning. Team doesn’t wanna burn a pitcher for 1 out so Bautista comes in gets the last out then bats the next inning. Outside of that as much as I love Bautista, any player in the system and most free agents are probably more deserving. Realistically I think if he can get just 1 or 2 outs he would have tremendous value as a 2 way. Even if he bats 200 his slash would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 200/300/420 that blows pitchers out of the water. THOUGHTS???
MLB is concerned that a shortened spring training will lead to pitcher injuries so taking them off the base paths eliminates one additional way for them to get injured.
This year, if it happens, might be a bit of a test run for a few things. Including the DH.
Only positive thing
Bad mangers don’t pull their pitchers after the 3rd, 4th or 5th bc they want to score runs.
Bautistas only chance was with an NL team I thought. Even if he bats 200 his slash would be somewhere in the neighborhood of 200/300/420 that blows pitchers out of the water.
please Batista
If any of you keep complaining about the survey i’m about to puke blood. Y’all can maybe not do it. What a concept!
I’m pretty sure all clubs have their own players to dh that are bad fielders
it would be cool do a post on who would probably DH on each NL team at the current moment.
You should also stop liking guys!!! They already did that article you stupid mouthbreather!!!
Steve said that they were going to do that in the MLB Live Chat today.
I thought Trumbo retired.
It’s clear from this list that it’s Puig. I don’t even know why there’s a survey for this.
Five of the six here aren’t good anymore. Why would you pull them off the scrap heap just because you add a DH? This article was pretty much a waste of time. Mr. Adams, thanks for the nap.
Jerry
Puig
Scooter
Melk Man-depending on what park it is..
The Mets got to be loving using Cespedes as the DH!
Puig being a dh doesn’t make any sense, he is so much better defensively
You didn’t read the info
The Giants already have the perfect DH (even thou I can’t stand the idea)
Hunter Pence
Reset time and get the Cargo of 10 years ago.
“much to the chagrin of many fans” It’s sad that so many are so antiquated in this regard. Next best thing after my username!
