2020 salary terms are set to be hammered out in the coming days. But what about what’s owed to players beyond that point? The near-term economic picture remains questionable at best. That’ll make teams all the more cautious with guaranteed future salaries.
Every organization has some amount of future cash committed to players, all of it done before the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. There are several different ways to look at salaries; for instance, for purposes of calculating the luxury tax, the average annual value is the touchstone, with up-front bonuses spread over the life of the deal. For this exercise, we’ll focus on actual cash outlays that still have yet to be paid.
We’ll run through every team, with a big assist from the Cot’s Baseball Contracts database. Next up is the Blue Jays:
Blue Jays Total Future Cash Obligation: $122.07MM
*Includes remaining signing bonus payout to Randal Grichuk
*Includes remaining obligation to Troy Tulowitzki (released)
*Includes buyout on 2021 club option over Chase Anderson

What a miraculously clean slate moving forward. Get me Springer and Lindor!
OilCanLloyd
Just Lindor please.

You’re right, but you need to fix your spreadsheet. The formulas are wrong. .
vtadave
Gotta re-sum that 2021 column
RunDMC
Yeah, 53.51M is quite a bit different. They’ve got 3 guys totaling more than their current sum.
Jeff Todd
Yeah I just realized this on my own … moved some rows around and jacked up the formula. Fixed!

When we start 21′, we are going to look at 3.5 for Gurriel as a bargain.

All it does is make you question why the Grickuk was extended. Not missing much.
Dorothy_Mantooth
I can see it fine on my iPhone. Maybe you can’t see it in the APP? I use the website and it shows up there.

Are you on a browser or the app?

Let me know if the link I added worked.

I think Grichuk was signed because the jays knew they weren’t competing for a couple season and wanted a veteran around who could be that mentor to the younger guys.
However you get what you pay for with him. Last year was his highest plate appearances he’s had as a big leaguer and when you play him that much you’ll have some extra wind being created from home plate. Let’s hope the Jays see this and let a prospect get some AB and scale back to the 450 PA guy he should be.

I think so far, Grichuk is worth pretty much what they paid him. He’s a decent fielder with some speed and 30 homer power.
OilCanLloyd
Grich was paid 5M last year. Not an overpay. This year he gets 13M. He needs to move the OBP bar 50 points from last year to keep the naysayers off his back.

Grich is a cap hit around $11-mil per season, so paying him $5-mil means absolutely nothing. When you pay someone that is an 8-figure cap hit, and that someone isn’t a necessary piece, it’s an overpay.

Blue Jays have great faith in Grichuk. If they felt they wouldn’t compete for a while they would’ve made the extension a year shorter. They feel he’s part of the solution.

This is where The Jays wanted to be. They have a good cheap controllable core and plenty of money and trade capital to fill the holes. Unfortunately, this was going to be the year where the kids were supposed to grow into the major league game, and a chance for another outfielder or two to step up and claim a job. If they don’t play ball this year, it will mean a lot of questions for 2021.
There are also going to be a few teams like the Astros that could see their last kick at the playoffs disappear through free agency and/or declining performance.
brucenewton
Could be a powerhouse in the coming years.
bigwestbaseball
Too bad they will always have to go through the Yankees. They would love to be in the American League Central.
wild bill tetley
They were supposed to be in the AL Central when Tampa joined the league. They fought it, and Detroit went to the Central instead.
