In a few weeks, we’ll be running a two-team mock expansion draft here at MLBTR – just for the fun of it! Currently, we’re creating 15-player protected lists for each of the existing 30 teams. You can catch up on the rules for player eligibility here.
The American League results are in! Click here to see who’s protected and who’s available for each AL team.
So far, we’ve covered the Braves, Cardinals, Pirates, Brewers, Reds, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Rockies, Dodgers, Padres, Giants, Rangers, Mariners, Athletics, Angels, Astros, Twins, Royals, Tigers, Indians, White Sox, Rays, Yankees, Red Sox, Blue Jays and Orioles. The Marlins are up next.
We’ll start by removing free agents Jonathan Villar, Matt Joyce, Francisco Cervelli, and Brandon Kintzler from consideration. Sixto Sanchez and Jesus Sanchez will make the protected list as Baseball America Top 100 prospects with 2020 ETAs. Here’s the initial protected list of ten players:
Sixto Sanchez
Jesus Sanchez
Brian Anderson
Sandy Alcantara
Miguel Rojas
Jorge Alfaro
Isan Diaz
Caleb Smith
Pablo Lopez
Jordan Yamamoto
That leaves five spots for the remaining 17 players. Check out contract statuses and team control here.
Jesus Aguilar
Jon Berti
Jeff Brigham
Lewis Brinson
Adam Conley
Garrett Cooper
Corey Dickerson
Robert Dugger
Yimi Garcia
Elieser Hernandez
Harold Ramirez
Magneuris Sierra
Ryne Stanek

With that, we turn it over to the MLBTR readership! In the poll below (direct link here), select exactly five players you think the Marlins should protect in our upcoming mock expansion draft. Click here to view the results.

Can someone please explain to me why Miguel Rojas is on the auto protection list? He seems just meh as a player nothing special. At least let us vote on him.
echozulu88
He has blackmail on Jeter. Jk I don’t follow the marlins but I do recall seeing an article recently that Miami views him as a leader and important part in building the team. I don’t know if that’s why he they protected him but that could be a reason.
chieflove42
he’s a consistent presence in both the clubhouse and field. the type of team member who will do anything you ask. with such young talent coming up you need that type of veteran for leadership. before him it was Prado that lead the locker room.
The Human Rain Delay
Im taking the years here, that kicks out Dickerson – Conley -Urena
Berti Cooper Brinson Sierra Stanek-
Could see keeping Steck or Elieser for one of the OF. if your not sold on both
3 outta Mias top 5 prospects are OF’ers
myaccount
Berti, Sierra, Urena, Stanek. Probably Harold Ramirez with the last spot.
brianstancato
Where is Monte Harrison? He’s on the 40 man roster. I’m not sure how exactly they are coming up with the list of players.
Bill the Cat
There’s a link in the first paragraph that explains the qualifications.
GONEcarlo
MLBTR is only going by Baseball America’s too 100, which Harrison is now longer on. He’d have a 2020 ETA, though, and anyone with major league time would be eligible. I’m sure the Marlins would protect him in a real life scenario, so yeah I agree with you that these lists are probably all a little off.

Stanek and Cooper… maybe?
Royalsfan12
Just saw the American League results and can’t believe Danny Duffy and Maikel Franco were protected over Scott Barlow and Tim Hill. For a team that needs bullpen help the most this is not a smart decision. Especially given Duffy’s contract.
DarkSide830
yeah some of those decisions were suspect, especially in the case of the Royals
echozulu88
A solid % go name value especially for the smaller market teams. Most MLB fans know Duffy, the others not so much. I tried not doing that with Miami. I wouldn’t have really heard much of Berti had I not had MLB the show.
andrewgauldin
Stanek
Ramirez
Dugger
Cooper
Brinson
123redsox
Brinson is junk
Afk711
Marlins have a tougher crunch than expected.
echozulu88
I opened it up expecting like 8 spots and was presently surprised
MetsFan22
LOL! Might as well not keep anyone!
redsfan48
Why are 52% of people keeping Brinson?
MetsFan22
Lol
brianstancato
Because of name recognition and that’s the only reason
medic87
I hope they do a draft or show us what the expansion teams would look like after going through all the team’s players that would be available, just to see what they would look like would be cool
hammer_time24
That’s exactly what they’re doing. Look at the first sentence.
medic87
Who actually reads the articles? Duh, LOL
Jaysfan64
I don’t get why Urena is so high
asaw780
Pretty easy – Berti, Brinson, Cooper, Dickerson, Stanek.
DarkSide830
Cooper, Dickerson, Hernandez, Ramirez, and Stanek are my guys.
MarlinsFanBase
Brinson
Duggar
Ramirez
Sierra
Hernandez
We’re rebuilding. These are the pieces that make sense. We’re losing and very likely finishing in last place no matter what. We might as well do it with youth that has a the hope of a chance to be useful long term – even if minimal.
sandman12
Cooper, Yimi, Ramirez and Berti, I suppose. I can’t even find five to save.
Selkies
I went with…
Garrett Cooper
Jon Berti
Robert Dugger
Harold Ramirez
Ryne Stanek
If Monte Harrison were on this list, I would’ve chosen him over Dugger.
