2020 salary terms are set to be hammered out in the coming days. But what about what’s owed to players beyond that point? The near-term economic picture remains questionable at best. That’ll make teams all the more cautious with guaranteed future salaries.
Every organization has some amount of future cash committed to players, all of it done before the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. There are several different ways to look at salaries; for instance, for purposes of calculating the luxury tax, the average annual value is the touchstone, with up-front bonuses spread over the life of the deal. For this exercise, we’ll focus on actual cash outlays that still have yet to be paid.
We’ll run through every team, with a big assist from the Cot’s Baseball Contracts database. Next up is the Twins:

*estimated 2021 salary for Michael Pineda (specific contract breakdown unknown)

Looks pretty healthy, but it all depends on Donaldson. If he continues to play like he did in Atl, with only minimal regression, it’ll be a steal.

I think he will. His swing is so beautiful and he has so much power

Having a beautiful swing didn’t help Griffey defeat Father Time. Hopefully Cruz will help Donaldson setup a good supplement and workout program that mitigates some of the aging process.

I don’t think you have Maeda correctly there. He’s making $3.125M in 2020, of which $2.44M is paid by the Dodgers (plus his $1M trade bonus paid by the Dodgers), so the Twins are only responsible for $700k or so (basically the opposite of what you put).
And while I acknowledge the note about his 2021 salary, you’re also ignoring the 2022-2023 salary retained by the Dodgers (which even Cotts seems to have wrong, or at least it doesn’t seem to add up, and weirdly skips 2022 to 2023).; seems like you could include that line pretty easily, no? (At least trusting Cott’s for the moment.)

wow you’ve done your research
