2020 salary terms are set to be hammered out in the coming days. But what about what’s owed to players beyond that point? The near-term economic picture remains questionable at best. That’ll make teams all the more cautious with guaranteed future salaries.
Every organization has some amount of future cash committed to players, all of it done before the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe. There are several different ways to look at salaries; for instance, for purposes of calculating the luxury tax, the average annual value is the touchstone, with up-front bonuses spread over the life of the deal. For this exercise, we’ll focus on actual cash outlays that still have yet to be paid.
We’ll run through every team, with a big assist from the Cot’s Baseball Contracts database. Next up is the Rangers:

Embarrassing level of spending for a team that was just gifted a new stadium.
DarkSide830
they just signed several players. what did you expect?
The Human Rain Delay
I disagree, Texas was correct in making the call that they had to rebuild and Hou/Oak had a firm grasp on the Div
Why spend money on short term vets who would just be taking up a prospects path to pt
They have spent some money on putting out a pretty respectable staff these days as well…….. compared to the extended batting practice for the opposing teams that had been the case for so many seasons past
I think they are on the right track, and as a fan thats all you can hope for, Id be vastly more concerned if they had a huge payroll carry- over right now given past results
SalaryCapMyth
Completely agree with Rain Delay. They may be baseball’s best rebuilding team and they did need to. When you rebuild you keep a low payroll. They could have done worse than pick up Frazier and Kluber.

I think Castellanos should be a ranger

I had tickets to the Rangers/Yankees series and I am still bummed about that!

That would of been great to see Yankees in the new ballpark. Hopefully they will revise the shortened season and still have Yankees come to Texas.

I see us grabbing a huge name in free agency some time over the next 2 years. I’d love to see Story manning shortstop for Texas when Elvis leaves. Texas’s biggest weaknesses are center field, Third, and either First or Catcher. We have Jung, Taveras, and Huff coming up, so I don’t expect Texas to get a huge names to block those positions, so if they do upgrade there it would probably be by trade (Example: Arenado.. not gonna happen, but it’s just an example). I just don’t know what the plan is. I’d say go get Springer in free agency, but Taveras is supposed to be the starting center fielder in 21′. I was saying go get Rendon, but Jung will be up by September of 21′, and most likely start in 22′. Same can be said for Grandal, and Huff (Huff, I’d say has a 21′ eta as well). Where do we spend money? The staff? We don’t have lockdown starting prospects (unless you’d consider Winn or Crouse that), so we can spend there. Bullpen is just throwing crap at a wall and seeing what sticks (luckily a lot has stuck), but I still see us getting Giles or Hendriks this free agency. IDK, I just rambled, but what do y’all think?
Ricky Adams
I think Trevino is pretty solid as catching prospect. Never gonna be a superstar, and prolly wont even be a top 5-10 catcher. But think hell be decent, and far better than jeff mathis. But, I dont see a major signing this winter. I’m like you, I’d love to see betts or Springer in texas, but I dont think ownership spends that kind of money. I think theyve owned team 10 yrs and think they rolled back payroll last 5. They did need to “rebuild”, so I get that. But they were supposed to start spending this past offseasons, but missed on every major free agent they “pursued”. I honestly, don’t think they were competitively going after those guys. I think they were “kicking tires” and doing “due diligence” to send “smoke screen” to fans. But, if I had rolled payroll back 25% in 4 yrs, promised fans to spend, and was going into a brand new billion dollar stadium I’m making damn sure I’ve either got a true superstar or competitive team going into stadium and we have neither. Gallo might be later but not yet.
