Rays left-hander Blake Snell has changed representation and is now a client of the Boras Corporation, Ken Rosenthal and Josh Tolentino of The Athletic report (subscription link). MLBTR has made note of Snell’s agency change in our database.
Snell’s switch to the game’s highest-profile agent comes long before he’ll be eligible to reach the open market. Coming off an AL Cy Young-winning season in 2018, he and his former agency, Apex Sports, scored a five-year, $50MM extension from the Rays in March 2019. That deal made for a record for players with fewer than three years’ service time in both length and total value. As a result of the pact, the 27-year-old Snell is slated to remain in Tampa Bay through the 2023 campaign.
As noted Monday here at MLBTR, Snell – the 52nd pick in the 2011 draft – has been quite effective for the Rays since he made his major league debut in 2016. However, aside from his 180 2/3-inning showing two years ago, he hasn’t eaten a great deal of frames in any season. Snell has averaged a bit over five innings per start in 97 outings, but the hard thrower has put up a sterling 3.24 ERA/3.42 FIP with 10.41 K/9 and 3.81 BB/9 along the way.
One outspoken a-hole hiring another outspoken a-hole. No denying the talent though
agreed!
not to mention he just said goodbye to Rays before free agency.
No denying the talent? Have you actually looked at his numbers. He’s had one exceptional year. And young pitchers with health issues rarely get healthier as they get older.
Boras is a great agent that does his job well.
So he’s outspoken because he wants fair compensation? And this from a Yankees fan?
Don’t go asking for a raise since you don’t want to appear to be an outspoken ahole.
Blake Snell is a moron who happens to be a very good baseball player.
How is he a moron?
Will Snell still be a Ray by season’s end?
How many arbitration years did the 5 year deal cover?
The Ray’s will trade him before the end of 2021.
Wild guess….that’s all that is. If someone overwhelms them with an offer I’d say sure….go ahead. The Rays way.
If it’s true that there won’t be Revenue Sharing this year or next, Snell’s definitly gone, as is KK, and some of those arb-eligible guys they picked up this winter. Ans SOME of Adames, Yarborough, Chirinos, etc.
And that’s no knock on the Rays…they litterally can’t survive without RS. Their attendance revenue + TV deals + Central Fund payments doesn’t pay the bills. By my guesses, their cap is about 50M.
And that’s stretching it…Stuie has to be willing to lose some money……Can’t say I blame him (and I’ve blamed him in the past for other things) for that.
Wow, someone’s sure planning ahead.
Though by the time 2023 finishes, Snell may have made a very wise and extremely profitable move. As much as Boras is a slimeball, if I’m a MLB player looking for a huge payday, he’s the guy I want as my agent.
I guess their stimulus checks funds ran out.
He needs to hire a PR guy.
Yes he does. I think the thought he was trying to communicate was legitimate but how he said it set off a lot of ire. Whatever keeps this guy from speaking in front of a camera or mic is for the best.
It also revealed stupid and selfish. It doesn’t take a genius to know wealthy athletes need to shut their traps during a pandemic that has seen the average person tumble into financial oblivion.
The logic of “I’m not risking injury for 25% pay” does make sense. Why do that and risk rehabilitation? I hope he comes through though.
Raise the issue with ownership, privately. Kindly “opt out” of playing this year but don’t expect any pay. Seems fair.
As Patrick Ewing taught us during his league’s lockout, “players make a lot of money, but we spend a lot too.”
What a surprise.
They’re both meant for one another. lol
okay cmon guys can you calm down. dont need to act like this guy is the devil because he wants what’s coming to him. and its not like he’s as bad as Mr. $300 million Mike Trout who already has much more banked than him.
As you have blatantly stated in other posts, these guys are entitled to make as much as possible. Fine. However, there is a time and place. You seem to forget that.
Im still bothered by the Mar 11 tweet by Snell
I agree with that Snell should not have said it, especially the way he did, I will point out he is wanting to get paid because the billionaire owners are trying to use Covid as a way of not paying the players their money that’s owed to them. There are contracts that everyone always says athletes do not adhere to, but nobody noticed when an owner doesn’t want to stick to it. If the owners don’t want to pay them, then they should void the contract and let them be free agents. I will re-iterate that smells statement was juvenile, but not without merit.
I suspect the lady I met in line at the grocery store today who told us that she lost her business bc of the pandemic doesn’t care about either the billionaire owners or the millionaire players. Just because Snell has the right to express himself doesn’t mean he should. Poor judgment. Selfishness. I bet the lady would agree with me.
Another move that shows he only cares about money.
Boras and Snell. Birds of a feather. Both douches.
Blake Snell strikes me as a guy who will retire after making $50 million dollars and still end up broke. He will also say it’s because the government takes roughly 50%. Moron!
