Trey Mancini has penned a must-read post for The Players’ Tribune in which he discusses his shocking colon cancer diagnosis and ongoing outlook. His uplifting attitude is most welcome in these difficult times.
As baseball tries to get back to the field in 2020, Mancini is sorting out the complicated logistics of treatment in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. He discloses that he has been diagnosed with Stage III cancer, which will require six months of bi-weekly chemotherapy.
As Mancini acknowledges, that timeline makes it rather unlikely he’ll suit up for the Orioles in 2020, if indeed there is a season. As he puts it, “I just want to make sure that I am physically fine before I go out there and start trying to perform again at a major league level.”
It goes without saying that Mancini’s recovery is of primary importance. He says he hopes to remain active, but he’ll first need to beat the disease before he’s able to build back toward professional athletics. Additionally, added care is warranted to ensure that Mancini does not become exposed to COVID-19, as his diagnosis and treatment put him at greater risk of serious complications.
It’s hard to see such a vibrant young man dealing with this kind of adversity, but Mancini’s outlook is at once hopeful and inspiring. MLBTR extends its very best wishes to Mancini and his loved ones.

As an Orioles fan and having the opportunity to talk with him before he is one of the nicest guys you will ever meet. He is one of the guys that it’s so hard not to like. I don’t except to see him on the field this season, but I’m excited to watch him again next season.

Not that it ever is easy, but right now is a really rough time to be doing chemo. I remember when my dad was home in between treatments, everyone else in our family got sick and me and him had to go hide out at a rich friend’s guest house.

I wish you a speedy recovery, sir. Colon cancer isn’t just an “old guys disease” as Trey demonstrates, we need to start including such screenings for all folks 20 and up, not just 40 and up.
Stage 3 in a young man is shocking but most kind of cancers are easier to tackle in its earlier stages, of course. Preventative screenings are the best way to do this, make it part of the physical, even if it’s a colo-guard sample, something is better than the “only seek treatment once it’s discovered through symptoms being developed”, because by then it’s often too late.
The only reason we don’t include it in young folks’ regular screenings now is because the costs associated, we normal folks don’t cost enough to do preventative screenings on, apparently.

Prayers for his recovery, not because of baseball but life in general. Godspeed Trey.

Great story by Trey. It helps to write things down and share with others. He is not alone. Good luck and it will be great to see him on the field again.

Always liked the guy, as much as you can “like” someone you don’t even know. Italian heritage (as am I) maybe; that he looked like a guy who achieved more by effort than any natural gifts, maybe; that he always seem to be very aware in every game, even those meaningless ones (for the O’s) in August/September.
The article just reinforces all that; pretty touching. Reminds me of when I was watching Lester (another cancer survivor) throw his no-hitter; I was fine until Francona came out of the dugout bawling like a baby.

Praying for a speedy recovery. I hope he gets in contact with others that are in remission right now. Anthony Rizzo, Jon Lester and Carlos Carrasco off the top of my head.
