Not long before the league shut down due to the ongoing pandemic, Mets right fielder Michael Conforto sustained an oblique strain that rendered him unlikely for Opening Day. The diagnosis came on March 11, just over two weeks from the since-postponed Opening Day, and the Mets didn’t provide a concrete timetable for Conforto’s expected return. The team still hasn’t put forth an official update on Conforto’s status — the indefinite delay to the season likely eliminated any urgency or obligation to do so — but the New York Post’s Mike Puma reports that Conforto is taking “regular” batting practice and appears to be largely back up to speed.
It’s been close to seven weeks since Conforto incurred what the club diagnosed as a Grade 1 strain of his right oblique. Grade 1 strains — the least severe on the scale — often sideline players for around a month or a bit more, although every injury situation is of course unique to the player in question. Still, it’s reasonable to expect based on his workout status and that historical context that Conforto would’ve been back up to speed by now. And it certainly stands to reason that whenever (or if) play is able to resume in 2020, that he’ll be ready to go for a second, abbreviated “spring” training camp.
The 27-year-old Conforto will be expected to play a pivotal role in the Mets’ offense, hitting in the heart of the order alongside the likes of reigning Rookie of the Year Pete Alonso, Jeff McNeil, J.D. Davis and a hopefully resurgent Robinson Cano. Conforto, the No. 10 overall pick in the 2014 draft, has solidified himself as the everyday right fielder and a well-above-average offensive contributor in parts of five seasons in Queens. He made his first All-Star team in 2017 and, over the past three years, has posted a combined .257/.363/.492 slash (129 wRC+, 131 OPS+) with 88 home runs, 74 doubles and three triples. He agreed to an $8MM salary this winter in his second trip through the arbitration process and remains under club control through the 2021 season.

Since he’s a Met I fully expect him to miss a full season

Don’t let him hang our with Cespedes.

I get the feeling that Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, Al Kaline, Frank Robinson, Mike Schmitd, Robin Yount, Cal Ripkin Jr, would have never made the Hall of Fame if they had today’s training regimen/trainers. Tough to accumulate HOF totals on the Injured List.

Good player. Fun to watch. Let’s hope everybody is healthy everywhere.

Would be nice for a change to see each MLB have a full healthy 25 man roster to compete with.

I strained my back working in the yard last week. Further tests by my wife luckily showed it to be a minor strain, and I’m expected to resume yard work activities by the end of next week. Since it required a stint on the couch, a minor gardening assignment can’t be ruled out before I’m back in the neighborhood yard work rotation.

The 41 year old me will be expected to play a pivotal role in our property maintenance, living in the heart of the neighborhood alongside Tom, drunk Dave, and shirtless Terry. I, the No. 1 overall pick by my wife in 2009, have established myself as the every week grass cutter and above average weed and tree trimmer in parts of five seasons in Dry Ridge. I made my first all-neighborhood lawn team in 2015 and over the past three years have felled 12 trees/installed 2 paver paths/built 1 tractor shed. I agreed to a non disclosed salary in 2018 and remain under the control of my wife and children for the foreseeable future.

You sure you were the #1 pick or is that what she tells you?
DockEllisDee
she held a draft in ’04 but that years No. 1 turned out to be a bust

This is the best post I’ve ever seen

I am nearly out of options. As a garden only type player who has never been great in the yard, I seem destined to be a utility player at best. Still, I love the game and will not quit.

First, I agree that this is a great post.
As for me, I did the outdoor work, and it took me a great deal of Sunday. After I finally was able to sit on the couch, the wife asked, “How is it that some of the other guys on our block did their yards in 30 minutes?”
I responded, “I don’t think they were as productive, and the ones that were or did better jobs, it wasn’t natural.”
“What do you mean?” she asked with an inquiring look. “They are built like Superman, so it’s conditioning.”
“Yeah, that’s not natural,” I replied.
“Hmmm…you know, I think you may be right, but I think it’s their equipment. I remember when I asked those wives about it, they got noticeably uncomfortable, and answered that the lawnmowers, hedge clippers, water hoses, air brushes, and all other equipment they use are juiced.”
“Yeah, something is juiced, but it isn’t the equipment. Ever notice how they always hurt themselves for little things like walking or lifting a lunch box, or bringing in the mail?” I responded.
“Hmmm…what brings you to that conclusion?” she asked.
“I watch baseball. Those lawnmowers and hedge clippers are about as juiced as the baseballs that everyone keeps blaming for the rise in home run totals. And MLB players sneeze and tear something that has them out for 60 days.” I answered as I held her hand to pull her over to watch a movie with me.

Hate to say it but the Mets might need to consider trading Conforto sooner rather than later in order to extend their window of opportunity.
MetsFan22
Why??? How would it extend their window? They don’t need to rebuild
Joggin’George
They’ve depleted their minor league system so much they may need more young players to replace what they lose… I’m saying “might”, there are many ways the team can make it so they contend for years to come but they need a better eye on the future.. they’ve traded away too many prospects and they need to somehow improve for the future
MetsFan22
They don’t have good prospects that are ready other then Gimenez and Peterson and even they aren’t anything special. But they have a lot of talent in the lower part of their minor league system. In a year they are projected to have 6 top 100 prospects with
Mauricio
Baty
Allen
Alvarez
Gimenez
Peterson
But most of them are really far away..
The things is that most Mets fans know the talent they have now is under contract for a while so when the current Mets players are about to be FA and we lose some we’ll have replacements..
Not worried at all
Javia
Gimenez hit .250/.309/.387 in AA last year. Baty hit .234 in rookie ball last year and Peterson is a LHP who throws 88-91 and had a 4.19 ERA in AA last year who is the Mets #10 prospect. You are getting big on a lot of less-than-impressive maybes.
MarlinsFanBase
Ah, talking like the Mets prospects are going to help. I remember when Mets fans said they were in good shape with their prospects like Ike Davis, Lastings Milledge, Mike Pelfrey, Aaron Heilman and Fernando Martinez…and many many many more.
MetsFan22
Even if Peterson is 4-5 in the future he will still be a top 100 prospect when he graduates. He will be in the 80-100 range…
Lol baty literally just came from highschool… please everybody knows he will be a top 100 soon. I’m not saying he won’t be a bust but he will make the top 100 list
And Gimenez is already a top 100 players who struggled when he first saw AA like most kids do… he also hit very good in the 2nd half and hit very good in the AFL and spring training…
MetsFan22
How is isan diaz Mesa Mesa and brinson working out????
Even your best hitting prospect Bleday is hitting bad!
Oh my I can’t wait for this failed rebuild!
MarlinsFanBase
Yeah, because the Marlins rebuilds clearly have failed more often than the Mets rebuilds.
Ahem…2003…1997…cough cough…1986.
MarlinsFanBase
Bleday hasn’t even debuted in MLB and was drafted last year.
Victor Victor Mesa also hasn’t broken the team yet.
Brinson has pulled off a Fernando Martinez, except he can actually catch the ball without falling flat on his face. findingdulcinea.com/news/sports/2009/july/Senior-S…
Isan Diaz just made his debut last season. It isn’t like he’s been around long enough to be considered a bust. Heck, he’s not even as old as when Reese Havens realized that he wasn’t going to make it.

The guy is a good ballplayer, but his body is made of glass.
VonPurpleHayes
More like Michael ConfortOw!
…Apologies. Quarantine has made me insane. Hope he recovers. Guy is very solid albeit very injury prone.

That was an awful effort. If I wanted lame attempts at humor I’d just pay attention to Dynamite Drop In Monty.
