APRIL 22: The Yankees have also committed to paying employees through the end of May, Jon Heyman of MLB Network tweets.
APRIL 21: Three more teams have adopted a policy of payment through the end of May: the Angels (via Passan, on Twitter), Pirates (via Jon Heyman of MLB Network, on Twitter), and Rangers (per Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News, via Twitter).
Additionally, the Rockies have adopted a more open-ended policy akin to that of the Tigers, per Britt Ghiroli and Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic (Twitter link).
APRIL 20:We’ve heard a trickle of information over recent weeks regarding MLB teams’ plans for non-player employees. That turned into a flood today, with news emerging on the plans of a majority of teams around the game.
While MLB commissioner Rob Manfred announced previously that uniform employee contracts would be suspended at the start of the month of May, thus freeing teams to make their own decisions on retaining personnel, we had already begun to see several clubs promise employment through the end of May. It’s now clear that a majority of clubs will reach that commitment, with ESPN.com’s Jeff Passan reporting the full list via Twitter.
These 17 teams will pay non-player employees through at least the end of May: the Astros, Blue Jays, Braves, Brewers, Cardinals, Cubs, Diamondbacks, Giants, Mariners, Marlins, Phillies, Reds, Red Sox, Rockies, Royals, Twins, and White Sox. Beyond that, there are no known assurances.
At least one team — the Tigers — appears to be going beyond that measure. Detroit owner Chris Ilitch announced today that the club has “no plays for lay-offs or furloughs of its employees.” While the organization did reserve the right to notify employees “if things change,” he said it’s “taking a longer term view.” (Via Chris McCosky of the Detroit News, on Twitter.)
The Padres have also announced plans that include longer-term assurances, albeit with some caveats, as Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune writes. Baseball operations staffers are promised jobs through the end of October, though those earning more than $60K annually will take progressive pay cuts. Employees on the business side have been promised paychecks through mid-May.
That leaves eleven other teams whose plans aren’t yet accounted for. But it’s not as if the failure to grant assurances by this point ensures the opposite outcome, so the absence of news should not be taken as an indication that layoffs are certain for those remaining organizations.

All will eventually
baines03
Not the Pirates.

Sad…..
Robertowannabe
The Pirates have since announced that they will. Before the Nats, Dodgers and Yanks announced
Bill Harford
The Orioles are owned by a family that made their fortune on the back of labor unions, but they have not yet committed to this. Typical hypocrisy of the Angelos family.
bobtillman
Well, the folks at Harvaaaad basically told their dining commons employees and janitors to go whistle, and meanwhile applied for 8 million bucks to pay their endless amount of “inclusivity officers”, funds provided by you and me (and our kids). So hypocrisy doesn’t end at Camden Yards.
Even Keith Law (an alum) was appalled. OTOH, he should have known better.
jorge78
Harvard sucks.
That’s where they teach the wall street and politico boys to scam the little guy…..
Dom2
not to mention they are whining about bailout money despite being one of the wealthiest collages. ELITIST BS.
markakis
They did commit to it though….
hOsEbEeLiOn
Damn it I’m too late. People are already crying and whining over rich people.
richard dangler
I’ll never understand why people hate the rich. They’re just as entitled to their money as you are to yours.

Give me half your money Vizionaire. I need it as much as you.
I’ll be awaiting the transfer of funds.

Guess you are a millionaire! Oh, wait, you think you MIGHT be a millionaire one day so you want to make sure the world is safe for your kind!
Back where I come from young man we would call you “a pig for Hormel.”
Rich people make their money exploiting the labor of poor people. For what? There are no luggage racks on hearses. Oh, and take it from someone who has died and been sent back:
YOU WILL BE JUDGED…..
AndyWarpath
I think there’s a misconception between “rich” and “wealthy.” A millionaire could be a hard working bloke who bought real estate at the right time and has worked his butt off for decades. No problem with that guy. But when you’re truly wealthy. When you’re worth more than you or your grandchildren could possibly spend in their lifetime, and you use that wealth to rewrite laws, hire tax attorneys, bribe politicians, and take advantage of those without other options – that’s where the problem lies. Even a tiny percentage of some of these people’s net worth would be life changing for thousands. When people stop being people and start becoming margins – that’s the problem.
DarkSide830
because many people without money are just as greedy as those with money in many cases. most people are happy with their lot but there are enough people that seem to think they automatically deserve as much as everyone else despite doing less.
WAH1447
Well if there are programs out there you can’t blame people or companies or businesses for taking advantage of them. Everyone one here knows they would do the same thing if they were making millions, it’s the people that are having to file for unemployment that are complaining. I’m not rich by no means and I to have had this misfortune of being scaled way way back to the point where I’m basically unemployed but I’m not complaining. Work hard be smart put yourself out there and you can one day too be making lots of money and still finding ways to make more
Corey.sobel88
Well as an employee of the Yankees who lost my job due to COVID19, I can honestly say I have not seen a dime from them. The Yankees I believe changed how they were giving out money to their employees. They are giving us money to help play bills, which they ask to see. For a team as rich as they are to not pay us anything is wrong. I expect more from them. Hope I am wrong and they pay all their seasonal employees.
jorge78
Sorry to hear that Corey…..
THEY WILL BE JUDGED!
Corey.sobel88
They will only be judged, if it gets out how they are not paying their employees. Which I’m not sure why it would get out to the public.
Robertowannabe
Well, you arre letting it out to the publc.
Corey.sobel88
Happy to say I just got a check in the mail from the Yankees.
johnnydubz
Yankees are a scumbag organization all the way through. Ownership, to Cashman, players such as Clemens(rapist),ARod,Giambi,Chuck,Jim Leyritz(murder),Jeter(tax Fraud). The fans who throw beer on opposing fans. Can’t go a day on the news without a Yankee fan getting arrested I wonder why. Complain about Astros cheating but 96,98,99,00,09 cheating was okay because it was Bud Selig turning a blind eye. Selig was a Yankee fan so no conflict of interest
BSHH
As a Tigers fan, reading this feels good. Chris Illitch git a lot a criticism for not throwing big bucks at free agents (which I would not deem completely useful at this point, either), but he deserves praise now.

snoopy369
@Tim et al – I would _love_ to see a side-linked article that was laid out like the Free Agent tracker that went team-by-team and said exactly what each team was committed to doing – or hasn’t committed to.
That way I know which teams to root for next year (or, whenever things come back to normalish).
lowtalker1
This is the time to see which organizations are better ran and if they truly care about fans and employees
hOsEbEeLiOn
Short answer is they don’t. Anything they donate or give can be used as a tax write off.
I find it hilarious people are complaining about how rich they are and want these billionaires to donate yet come tax time in 2021 they’ll get HUGE tax breaks for doing so.
DarkSide830
paying people’s saleries is not donating. its paying people’s saleries.
tedtheodorelogan
Can the rest of us who aren’t so lucky go back to work soon? Savings are running out. Rent is due again in a week. Children are getting hungry. Still haven’t seen that whopping 1200 bucks we were promised. Society can only sacrifice so much to save the old and the unhealthy, as harsh as that sounds.
WAH1447
At this point, we should shelter the vulnerable and let everyone else go back to work and shoot for herd immunity. At this point it seems like there have be 1000s if not millions of cases going around well before the first documented one was. We can’t keep doing this for to much longer the economy won’t be able to rebound if we go another month of this. So if you are old or have an underlying health issue either stay home or do the best you can to protect yourself and let everyone else go back to work. Keep religious gatherings to online only, keep the kids home and the teachers teach online limit capacity at large gatherings and just go for the herd immunity it’s the best option we have at this point. There has probably been close to 10 million actual cases as it is. We all know China Russia and Iran’s numbers are false and the other countries trying to keep an actual count can’t count the millions they already missed so no need to watch the economy go to crap any longer
skullbreathe
I’m trying to read the tea leaves if this means teams will report to camps in June therefore some income will start to accrue to teams via TV contracts and more money will be available for employees? Hell I don’t know….
dsteig
Why can’t they play the regular schedule without fans? Just shorten the schedule. Use the stadiums where they are scheduled
dsteig
Why can’t they play games on the correct schedule in the right statiums just without fans. Let us watch on TV

No trash can or trash can operator should be left unemployed. This virus is not their fault.
markakis
Glad to see people trashing on the O’s for not doing this, even though they in fact have already guaranteed pay through May. Why are they not included here, it was announced yesterday morning!
bigwestbaseball
Astros are cheating scum bags!
