Yankees star Aaron Judge was limited this spring by a mysterious upper body ailment that was ultimately diagnosed as a stress fracture in his rib. Today, the team updated his outlook, as MLB.com’s Bryan Hoch reports (Twitter link).
It turns out that Judge was not only suffering from the rib issue but also pneumothorax (collapsed lung). Fortunately, that latter issue is now fully resolved.
Today’s CT scan revealed “slight improvement” in the rib. No doubt the team will continue to take a cautious approach befitting the unusual injury and unusual broader situation. Judge is due to be checked again in a few weeks’ time.
For the time being, Judge is continuing to work out and receive treatment at the team’s spring facilities. With the lung issue no longer a concern, Judge has been cleared to fly, though his immediate plans aren’t clear.

I wonder if the rib Fx so severe it caused the pneumo or the pneumo was a spontaneous one. Both bad but a spontaneous means it can happen when a stress to body, ie Drew Bledsoe.
Chris
Maybe a splinter of the rib fracture? Hard to believe the 2 injuries were simultaneous with Boone saying he thinks the rib injury happened in September
Manfredsajoke
Judge has definitely mastered the art of striking out. Mark Reynolds version 2.0
all in the suit that you wear
I think Judge gets some bad called strikes because he is so tall. Sometimes a strike is called on a ball below his knees which would be a strike to most people, but not him.
sambino
Alot of the strike calls against Aaron Judge are below the knees if MLB ever uses robo-umps full-time I think the one will benefit the most will be Aaron Judge.
MoRivera 1999
Judge has an OPS+ of 151. Mark Reynolds: 103. Try again Manfredsajoke. That’s an eyes-closed hater whiff.
nymetsking
that comment’s a joke.
sambino
Manfred is not the only joke my friend you are as well!
brucenewton
He won’t get the low strike called. The pitch halfway between the shoulders and the belt will get called now. Or when the auto strike comes in. The taller you are the bigger the strike zone will be naturally. Judge will struggle.
mrmackey
Right he’s the same as a guy with a .236 BA and .328 OBP.
Mkay.
Chris
Glad to hear they diagnosed that pneumothorax. Also liking the new layout banner.
pasha2k
Pneumo are nothing to be glad about, it is so serious it
that can affect their entire career. Emotionally n physically.
qbass187
Smart. Can’t strike out if you can’t play.
goldenmisfit
Absolutely idiotic statement from an absolute moron. In his first 1000 plate appearances in the regular season he has 106 career homeruns. The only player in baseball history with a better homerun to play appearance ratio in the first 1000 plate appearances is a guy by the name of babe Ruth. But, have you done your homework before posting an absolute brain dead response you would have known that. You are now educated but I am sure you will continue to troll.
juanc-2
But what about the strikeouts?
boo rad
Babe Ruth, 106 strikeouts vs. Aaron Judge, 546 strikeouts.
wileycoyote56
Ruth didn’t face the pitching that they have today. Comparing different centuries is ridiculous

Wow the new dumbest take champion has really raised the bar
MoRivera 1999
He’s got a career OPS+ of 151 and 19.1 WAR in 369 gmes over 3 seasons. The K’s really aren’t a factor.
Kslaw
They seem to be a pretty big factor in the playoffs. 41 of them in 121 at bats.
MoRivera 1999
Playoffs are a different animal. He hasn’t been a strong factor there for whatever reason, but it’s not his K rate. His K rate is about the same as the regular season. The difference is seen in his slash line and OPS.
oldmansteve
Judge is a statistical anomaly, given his homerun rates and k rates, he should not sustain babips as high as he does. However, guys with his homerun rates typically have higher flyball rates (obviously). Judge has more liners which helps sustain higher babips. Guys with his line drive rates typically don’t strike out or homer as much as he does. He also has elite exit velos which would explain the high homer rates despite not hitting a lot of fly balls. If his profile settles, he should be a worse hitter than he has been, but there isn’t a comparable guy to him given the oddity of his batted ball profile. My hunch is that he is closer to Jose Bautista than what he has been the last 2 seasons, but then again, he is not like anyone else.

How’s your career been going so far
Dorothy_Mantooth
Still no source of the rib fracture? I’m wondering if he did it bench pressing. That’s a big part of his workout routine and if you watch these guys, they like to bounce the bar off of the chest. This is pure speculation, but regardless I really hope he gets healthy and cuts back on the weight lifting. While I’m a Red Sox fan, baseball is much better with a healthy Aaron Judge in it.
MoRivera 1999
As a NYY fan, that’s kinda the way I feel about Sale. MLB is better with a healthy Sale wrestling with the top pitchers in the sport.
Lars MacDonald
They said it probably came from a diving play he made in September. He kept doing his normal workouts, so it didn’t have a chance to heal.
bobtillman
He’s a pretty good player but I didn’t realize he could fly. Wow, those Yankees are really talented!
CursedRangers
He could fly, but due to the CoronaVirus the government has requested that he limit his travel for the betterment of society.

Clicked on Judge’s stats and took a peak at his home/road numbers. He is an absolute beast at home. Not as beastly on the road.
notagain27
Yankee Stadium will do that for a hitter with inside/out approach. Everyone bashing Judge needs to pick another battle. All the kid does is keep his act clean and play hard every out. Game is hard to play!
its_happening
I hear you on the inside-out swing you reference. But let’s not kid ourselves; it’s a bad look when your OPS is roughly .200 points more at home, given the apple watch story, Beltran, Chris Young and Girardi. A little home cooking. As bad as what Houston did, they at least had players perform outside of their park.
MoRivera 1999
I was wondering where you were headed. Tin foil hat land. It’s 1) the park and 2) home field advantage. Most players play better at home, and then it’s Yankee Stadium after all. Come back when you have some evidence.
baseball_fan_usa
They had one of the biggest acquisitions named Carlos Beltran from 2018-2019 per Alex Cora. You know, he had some nice devices and strategies. Look up last years London series.
baseball_fan_usa
Here you go, pal.
“It wasn’t a good weekend on the field. That’s a good offensive team. We know that. They’re a lot better than last year. Their attention to detail is phenomenal. I was joking with somebody that their biggest free-agent acquisition is Carlos Beltran. (wink). I know how it works. He’s helping a lot. They’re paying attention to details, and we have to clean our details. It was eye-opening, the last few days — from top to bottom. And I’m not saying devices — all that stuff. It’s just stuff that the game will dictate and will scream at people. And he’s right there. Throughout the evening, I was looking and I saw it. And right now, they’re a lot better than us.”
its_happening
I laid it out succinctly. Can help it if you want to deny it.
You’ve been one of the most vocal opponents of the Astros on this site. Yet their home/road discrepancies do not match Aaron Judge. Not even close. So close your eyes and pretend there is nothing there. I don’t want your tin foil hat. You can keep it.
MoRivera 1999
When the Commissioner’s office confirms it, I’ll accept it. Your little stat review doesn’t prove anything. Look at Arenado. Is CO stealing signs?
MoRivera 1999

Your long quote:
You forgot the most important part: the source. Also the source never says what he saw…
baseball_fan_usa
Well the commissioners office confirmed the Astros weren’t cheating 2019. Looks like a double standard there. It was a league wide problem but MLB decided to sweep it under the rug using the Astros as a scapegoat.
MoRivera 1999
Beltran played in NYY BEFORE Houston. There’s absolutely no evidence he was involved in stealing signs with the NYY.
MoRivera 1999
baseball fan USA
League wide problem? Pfffttt! That’s what ALL deflectors say, regardless of the crime. “Everybody does it!!!” Laughable.
The NYY were investigated and the allegations were found to have “no merit.” They were fined for a phone. No cameras. No sign stealing.
I’ll be the first to condemn the Yankees if they are convicted.
baseball_fan_usa
I don’t think you have reading comprehension skills. Cora in the quote saw the effects of having Beltran employed by the Yankees regardless of him playing for them before. He was talking about that moment in 2019. The Yankees can’t even win while cheating.
MoRivera 1999
That Cora quote is the most unclear, convoluted statement in the world. “I’m not saying devices.” Can’t steal signs without devices so what the hell is he talking about? Not stealing signs. Even if we were talking stealing, Cora made those accusations, the NYY were investigated and cleared. Unlike the Stros.
If the NYY get convicted for stealing signs I will not defend them or make lame excuses like “everybody does it.” You just can’t accept the fact your team cheated. You have to try to take other teams down with you. That is pathetic.
its_happening
They won’t be convicted. There’s too much money at-stake and they need the Yankees. But you can stop defending them and start the actual research in your safe space. Start with Chris Young and follow the Beltran lead. It’s not just the park helping Judge.
There is a reason little to no PED positive tests are linked to players from the NYY. When they leave New York they suddenly get popped. The Yankees are a money maker for MLB and cannot have them tainted in any way. Boston, the Mets, they are expendable big market teams. Not the Yankees.

We need Judge and Stanton together again
Rojeff9
Sox fan here. I like Judge, seems like a high character role model type player. With his size he may continue to have injury issues however.
Stanton on the other hand…
bigwestbaseball
Judge is injured all the time, he should sign a team friendly contract as soon as he can.
Dom2
Maybe 50% more than Hicks
whyhayzee
Error in judgement is a combination of Frank Howard and jacoby and meyersbury. Hondo was a similar hitter in terms of average and power. Trouble is the injuries are breaking judge down. No baseball for a year and maybe he will recover. We shall see.

People be like Judgian Haters all the way. Just … why? It’s doesn’t take 3 Mike Trouts to man a world series contender. I know the strikeouts , but these retards are drawing comparisons to Reynolds and … Bebe Ruth!?
