best closer in baseball circa 2022
nymetsking
Zzzzzzzz.
DarkSide830
i guess you want another Harvey situation then?
Geebs
Please explain how the 2 are even remotely comparable other then they both play/ed for the Mets?
VonPurpleHayes
Both are known to be occasional divas. Both seem to suffer from injury from time to time. Both have pitched like the best in baseball briefly, but then never lived up to that season again.
teufelshunde4
If any player is remotely talented & plays for the Mets he gets labeled a cant miss HOF.
Ike Davis, Lagares, Conforto, Duda, d’Arnaud, Murphey, Mejia are examples of what Im talking about.
Only DeGrom has delivered on his potential.
dynamite drop in monty
I dunno. Butch Huskey had a decent career.
fieldsj2
Don’t forget about Sidd French! He was a Met if memory serves me right.
Chin Music
And Rey Ordonez
MetsFan22
Not even comparable bro… Harvey would still be elite without the Theroux syndrome thing. Unless you tell me Syndergaard would get that the two have nothing in common.
MetsFan22
No one said they would be HOF…. and you acting like conforto isn’t a good player…. conforto delivered on his potential.. also Murphy wasn’t suppose to be 2015 Mets playoffs-Nats Murphy so he passed his potential…
raisinsss
It’s easy to win arguments if you get to make up the other side’s position, isn’t it?
BigFred
Both have awesome nicknames. There’s that.

“While Harvey is different from Santana and Martinez, one has to wonder if the Mets are cursed when it comes to ace pitchers.”

DarkSide830
extremely talented pitchers with injury concerns on the Mets that have to undergo TJ. what im saying is id worry they’d try to run him back out there full tilt too quickly and break him. his stuff would destroy coming out of the pen.
LouisianaAstros
Really was hoping the Rangers found some way to trade for him last year.
Wanted them to throw away their farm system.

PhilsPhan
He’s just happy that we all have CV on the brain and have forgotten about the Astros cheating for the moment. Don’t worry, the hate is only on pause!
DarkSide830
lol
Psychguy
Not a Mets fan, but I never like to hear about injuries to the games’ best players; Astros organization notwithstanding.
baseball_fan_usa
Syndergaard and The Mets all spring were so busy running their mouths about the Astros, they forgot they have to perform well and stay healthy to even get in the playoffs which they haven’t since 2016. Once they win a WS, then maybe they can some smack.
newpony13
The Astros would have 0 WS if they didn’t cheat their way to their only one in franchise history. also what does this have to do with Syndergaards injury?
Smooches 😉
DarkSide830
smooches? what are you, Thor’s mom?
MetsFan22
Lol are you mad nobody counts the Astros only championship????
DarkSide830
funny thing is that just isnt true

@baseball_fan
What a STUPID comment. So are you telling us that the only way teams should be allowed to complain is if they won a world series? That’s a little ironic as THEY won the world series after cheating.
The Mets are just one group of voices angry at the Astros. I’ve read or heard comments from players with the Phillies, Yankees, Braves, Angels, Dodgers AAAAAAND the Mets and that was without even trying. I could probably google “Astros cheating scandal” combined with ANY team name and would find someone who spoke out against the Astros.
baseball_fan_usa
I know those other teams have been talking but what have they done out outside of the Dodgers going to TWO WS and getting bounced by the Nats in the NLDS? They can talk but its a pretty bad look when youre talking trash but yet you cant put up when its time. For example, Little Trevor Bauer has been one of the most vocal yet hes busy throwing baseballs over walls and having a 4+ ERA. BTW, hes the same guy who cut himself with a drone before the 2016 WS. In the end, I am saying they should focus on their organization and winning before dishing out opinions.
SalaryCapMyth
Explain how you think winning should be a prerequisite to complain about the Astros scandal? You don’t see the irony between the Astros cheating while they win and YOUR standard of not complaining UNTIL the OTHER teams win..a world series I guess?
Also..I’m not going to assume you are an Astros fan. It could be that this is simply your opinion. But if you ARE an Astros fan, does it not ALSO strike you as ironic to slam the Dodgers of all teams, for not winning a world series?
Psychguy
Is there a difference between running smack and recapitulating facts?
baseball_fan_usa
The Mets didn’t discover the Astros cheated. We ALL knew through the media. Commenting on other organizations is weak and players know this. Once you enter the spotlight talking trash, you better be ready to back it up.
Psychguy
Apparently you don’t understand what I wrote… you show yourself to be as stupid as your comment.
MetsFan22
How do you know they won’t back it up??? Syndergaard had a 4+ era last year and won 86 games in the toughest division with the worst bullpen… if Diaz and familia do better the Mets could make some noise..
SalaryCapMyth
Every team has bashed the Astros. Winning is not a prerequisite to be angry at what ghe Astros did.
Bleedsblue81
Always coordinating with his caps lol.
Jeff Todd
That’s a NY Giants hat!!!
dmarcus15
Probally why they couldn’t get him traded.
scarfish
Deftones shirt nice!!! Favorite album/songs Jeff?
Dorothy_Mantooth
I know this is a Thor article but why hasn’t Chris Sale gone under the knife yet? 2 other players had TJ surgery last Thursday and Dr. Andrews has his own private facility dedicated to this procedure, so the whole delay in elective surgeries due to COVID-19 doesn’t really apply here. If Thor gets his surgery before Sale, the Red Sox have some explaining to do.
User 4245925809
TJ is an elective surgery. Most states have stopped doing any during this time of emergency for multiple reasons.
raisinsss
Surely he could have traveled to a state without those restrictions, no?
DarkSide830
there are only a handfull of trusted TJ surgens if im correct.
SalaryCapMyth
Hmm..that may be a more relevant point than many think. There are probably a limited amount of surgeons that MLB endorses and I could imagine insurance plays a part in this too. When several million dollars are at risk, it’s easy to see how this might be. I know we have some posters here who are more enlightened on this topic than I so maybe one of them would like to post some clarity on the subject?

Just part of being a Met
Altuves Buzzer
Such a tough place for the Mets here….really they can’t win whether they stick with him or move on……all the while just wasting DeGrom’s prime.
MetsFan22
Yeah bc they already missed the playoffs in 2020…..
angt222
I’m hoping he comes back and pitches well but it would be a real shame If 2016 was the best he had to show MLB.
30 Parks
Syndergaard is a thrower, not a pitcher.
DarkSide830
i really dont think that’s true. Thor has preformed quite well in the past, even if not as well recently.
findingnimmo
30 parks, I completely agree. And yes dark side, he did preform quite well, but that was when he was a novelty to the game. Things changed rapidly the past three years and now throwing 98-100 isn’t special. It’s becoming a requirement almost. So a pitcher like Degrom that can touch those numbers, sale, Cole, mad max, etc, they quickly learned how to pitch while throwing hard. Thor never learned how to pitch. To me, that’s why his injuries piled up (had to workout more in his mind to throw even harder since he couldn’t pitch) and that’s also why his stats have not lined up to his first couple of years, again when he was a novelty. If he learns how to pitch, then fine, he will be a stud, but until then he will be nothing more than a what if or a could have been.
