Baseball’s preeminent player agent is rarely shy about sharing his opinions, but in his latest comments, he’s making an extra effort to not offer anyone advice when it comes to COVID-19.
But he still has opinions. Scott Boras believes players are best-suited staying in camp and working out in the semi-isolation of their squads, utilizing the healthcare options available therein, per Joel Sherman of the New York Post.
Speaking further on the issue, Sherman quotes Boras as saying, “Players are evaluated daily and have immediate treatment access. This process over the month is proven effective versus the outside world as there are no reported cases [of coronavirus among major leaguers]. … The key to low probability of the virus is to be in isolated areas. But the key in treatment is early detection and treatment. And players are getting daily health care, they are getting daily diagnostics. They are in one of the best isolation situations when it comes to managing this outbreak.”
Many players evidently agree with Boras, as the Yankees, Padres and Tigers are among those teams that have mostly decided to stay put for now. MASN’s Mark Zuckerman reports that the Nationals are largely staying put, while the Reds and Cardinals are airing on the side of breaking up camp. Players across the board have been told that they are allowed to return to their homes should they so choose.

thanks Dr. Boras

Yes let em stay in camp. Also some of the league minimum players and especially the milb players only source of income is per diem at this point.
Vizionaire
hope they eat with big leaguers, too. instead of peanut butter sandwiches every meal they may get to eat some real foods.
tigerdoc616
There are risks no matter what. Put 100+ guys in a camp in close proximity, one guy gets it and it will spread rapidly. But Bora$$ is right in that they will get regular health care. The key with staying in camp is making sure to limit exposure of the players to the outside world.
If the players do go home, there is a risk in exposure due to travel. But once home, they can self isolate and use social distancing to minimize their chance of exposure. What is the greater risk? Hard to know which is why MLB is giving the players the option.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
Scott Boras just signed Coronavirus to a 20 year contract with 30 years in deferrals. Sorta like Max Scherzer’s deal.
Boras has been terrible for the game.
Shaking down owners for how long now? Then people who don’t even watch baseball have to pay sky high cable bills because they have to support the effort too without even realizng it
tomjoadsghost
He shakes down owners? Wouldn’t MLB contact FBI if this was true? He is great for players, and they make baseball. Don’t defend billionaires it comes off very disgusting.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan
If it weren’t for the billionaire owners, there would be no game.
Plus all these owners made their money outside of baseball. Sure they make money now but essentially they were like Paul Allen (who I loved as owener, he was great may he RIP) made booku bucks and then decided to get into the game. Ted Lerner is a good owner too, as is Arte Moreno but he hasn’t one the big one yet
oldoak33
“ If it weren’t for the billionaire owners, there would be no game.”
Well that’s a joke of a statement.
its_happening
The billionaires are the ones having to carry the bag during this ordeal. Players will not be doing the heavy lifting. Now is not the time to slag the owners when some will be stepping up above the call of duty – something the overwhelming majority of players won’t do.
Vizionaire
there was a game before any of the owners.
adkuchan
Meh. Pro sports is just about the safest investment a billionaire can make. With revenue sharing, collective bargaining, salary restrictions, etc…there is almost no scenario in which they can lose money. The value of the franchises continues to skyrocket.
Thought and prayers to the billionaires.
its_happening
Game before the owners? Cool. Have every player on the 40-man buy them out, own a personal stake in the team. Then they can call the shots. Let’s see how that goes over.

Vizionaire
but most became billionaires because they like the money much more than baseball.
Strike Four
Billionaires are specifically -NOT- people. Does Zuck or Bezos or any of them look like a human being to you? They are parasites and nothing more.
For the last goddamn time you CANNOT “make” a billion dollars. You can only use your current wealth to “shake down” corrupt politicians so they change laws to allow you to hoard wealth, which is how EVERY billionaire is formed. We did not have this before Reagan, you can read history books and they will show you how billionaires happened very clearly, and nothing, I repeat NOTHING they have ever done has helped greater society in ANY way. Bill Gates whined and greased up WA state officials to make it impossible for developers to create alternatives to Microsoft to the point where for decades, just turning your computer on meant paying Gates a tax. Facebook was like the 10th social network but Zuck did the same thing to destroy competition and then when they removed restrictions on him, he was already rich enough to buy the competition (Instagram). Just look at talentless rich kid Elon Musk, who bought creative people in to work on his cars, and then he takes all the credit without actually doing a damn thing. Bezos simply owned an aggregator of online shopping, you can still buy these things direct, so he didn’t even do anything, same goes for Daniel Ek and Spotify.
These are who billionaires are. Parasites on society and nothing more. Now we have imbeciles ranting in the comments about how if theres no owners theres no game, which is just false. Billionaires have held us all hostage over the last 20 years and its time to end their tyranny.
Lefty_Orioles_Fan

But you have to agree it takes MONEY to Make MONEY. So don’t be mad because the people you mentioned are a 1000x’s smarter than you are and had the foresight to turn millions into billions.

All of this is completely over blown. There are only 2k cases nation wide. That’s roughly the size of a single high school. People, go live your lives and stop believing this media created lie.
Socrates1
Just a few days ago there were only 1,000 cases nationwide. Do the math.
wilkes47
yes but there’s 2k CONFIRMED cases. my city has one confirmed case. there could be 1000 people who have gotten it from that person and redistributed it-the just haven’t been tested yet. the fact is nobody knows how many really have it, but we can be sure, the number infected is far greater than any number we see published anywhere
Priggs89
“the fact is nobody knows how many really have it, but we can be sure, the number infected is far greater than any number we see published anywhere”
Based on the way they are testing, this assuredly is the case. And in turn, the reported fatality rate is also significantly higher than what’s actually happening.
John Kappel
Actually, by having so many more cases that are unknown it is likely to drive the fatality rate down not up. Most scientists are expecting the fatality rate to be near 1%. That may not seem like a lot but it is 10 times higher than the flu. Either way, Richard Dangler needs to take his tinfoil hat and shut up. Our herd immunity currently, is predicated upon us staying isolated. We have no vaccine. We do not know if or bodies will build up immunities to this after we get it.

Good point, let’s wait until it kills a bunch of people before doing anything.

You believe those in leadership positions are telling the truth? Look at Italy and Iran. Iran is building mass graves that can be seen from space.

italy is giving up on anyone 80 years old and up.

also, if china or italy had acted faster in mandating quarantines 2months ago the way we are starting to do in the US, the world probably would not be in this situation right now
Vizionaire
i’m having hard time connecting iran’s outbreak to that of china.

Lmao….And the US
US knew this was happening Jan 6……. that is not when a state of emergency was declared. By months. With an ‘S’
…Yeah…. let’s just not go into negligence here…
AngelDiceClay
So you’re saying on Jan 6 when a minuscule of people had it we should of declared a state of emergency so the hordes of idiots can over react and clean out the shelves at the stores?
oldoak33
I agree, let it run its course like Influenza without vaccines or decades of data. Surely the 10-20% mortality rate in elderly will go down with much larger sample sizes.
Ducey
Hey Richard. The expansion rate of the virus in the US is 40% per day. That means in 2.5 days using your number, there will be 4000, by Friday 8000, by Sunday 16000, and by next Tues 32000. Then you are Italy. You will have hundreds of thousands of people with it in a couple of weeks.
And that’s using your number which is wrong, because the US is not able to test.
I live in Canada. We have 1/10 the population. We have done more testing than the US. Think about that.
We will be closing our border to you soon because most of our cases come from the USA
DarkSide830
so far theres only 2000, but it spreads quickly and is deadly.
jonnyzuck
The risks are not overblown at all, this virus is really bad and there need to be steps taken to control it. I agree a little that people should go live their lives because shutting everything down has real consequences and the last thing people need is to add more stress to their lives but doing things like washing hands, staying home when sick, and limiting large crowds is the right thing to do
spareman7 2
yea Tell that to two of my friends that have died with the virus. Real Fake news huh…… your stupid that’s real news
Strike Four
Moron, YOU can have it and not know it and give it to someone who will die. Stop gaslighting you dumb fraud account.
adkuchan
A lot of us are likely to get it at some point. The real danger is if everyone gets it at once. Hospitals are generally over crowded and under staffed as it is.
Italy is living the worst case scenario. If we are smart and take this seriously we can avoid a similar fate.
Col_chestbridge
One of the things widely speculated is that the virus is sensitive to heat. Seems to me if you play for the Mariners or Indians (cold weather, confirmed infections in town), you would want to stay in camp.
RedLegJason
Every virus is sensitive to heat. That’s why you get a fever when you have one. Your body raises its core temperature to fight it off.
adkuchan
Viruses also tend to proliferate more quickly in cold weather, simply because everyone is stuck inside together.
Joeypower
Players should go home and help their young families or parents to stay safe and healthy.

Advantages: Controlled, isolated environment; constant monitoring with immediate access to medical staff; warm weather. They last point shouldn’t be underestimated. While much is unknown about COVID-19, the spread of similar viruses is restricted in warmer climates. Early testing shows temps at and above 76/77F restricts its spread. The majority of cases in Florida so far are travel related.
MWeller77
We are starting to see positive tests in Southern California, but Northern CA and Seattle have been much harder hit. There may be something to your argument that warm weather regions may be less susceptible to spread.
That said, we are closing schools and canceling events here too, so I wouldn’t make light of the risk anywhere. As you note, there are travel-related cases in Florida.
Hawktattoo
The warm weather does not effect it…that is one of the big scares. Warm weather will help theory doesn’t work….look at Italy, Iran, Egypt.
CrikesAlready
I’m kinda on the edge with MLB because I cut the cable and my local team (Padres) is on an FM station that (in spite of them recently adding a ton of repeater towers) I cannot listen to at my home 30 miles north of Petco Park. I can hear Dodgers and Angels games + Giants night games on my radio easily.
A month+ layoff is just an incentive for me not to follow the team as closely.
Science and history shows the Wuhan coronavirus doesn’t take kindly to spring and summer. I do believe that the reaction to this issue is mainly a hyped political issue in the US and a histrionic media. Anybody remember the media reaction to a much more deadly swine flu in 2009-10?

How about the Zika virus
douger007
What the f is ‘social distancing?’ I won’t argue that this whole deal is a sham, but calm down folks! Treating this like we are in the midst of a zombie apocalypse is ridiculous. Exercise some common sense, and go on with your lives.
gravel
Common sense looks at factors beyond what is convenient for the outcome you want. Here are a few for your convenience:
The US has tested a very few people. The test the US developed for C19 doesn’t work.
Statistical analysis of other countries who have tested and documented well (S. Korea is one), show that the true rate of infection is much higher than confirmed (tested) cases.
At this point the best option is to flatten the curve to reduce the strain on our health care system by practice social distancing. China (outside of Hubei), Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, and S. Korea (until case 31) all have done a good job at this. Even so, their health care systems are overloaded.
Keep in mind small percentages are millions of actual people.
Vizionaire
i dearly hope “the deniers” are infected with the virus and tell us it was just way overblown by mainstream media!
Priggs89
You do realize that almost all of them would still go on living life just fine, right? I don’t think that’d have the effect you think it would.
MoRivera 1999
Only if the rest of us succeed in spite of them to flatten the curve of the rate of spread of infection, no thanks to you. 2-3% mortality among a large infected population of millions adds up. Cf. Spanish Flu 1918. That’s what we would get if listened to and behaved like the deniers.
AngelDiceClay
The media lives for things like this. Have fun finding food at the store this weekend
AngelDiceClay
Very noble of you.
Joegio
Boras is only protecting his bank roll. Dont know why players need agents. Only thing it does is make idiots rich for nothing
MoRivera 1999
Because most players lack the negotiation and legal skills to get a sophisticated deal done to their best advantage. Not saying all deals are perfect or even great, but that the vast majority are much better than a player would get on their own.
jim stem
From a personal standpoint, would players rather risk flying around the country and crossing airlines with people from confirmed covid-19 areas?
If there are no outbreaks around their facilities, just stay there. They can work out, take bp, pitchers can throw to live hitters, they have their own medical personnel on site. Minor leaguers get extra attention, major leaguers can work on new positions and train.
Of course the flip side is that Florida does have confirmed cases, does it not?
The USA is one big question mark right now and no one really knows whether the threat will be contained or not and no vaccine on the horizon. I’m afraid this season may be in jeopardy until the all star break and what happens when the first player contracts it?
Will there still be an election with everyone having to touch the machines? You bet there will be!
Everyone just needs a little patience. Schools here in Pa have shut down for two weeks and the feeling is that it may last into May. What then?

You have to love these people who always say that main stream media is fake. When is it going to end. Do you only want one news source like in communist countries or in dictatorships. Where they print only propoganda. Might as well read the NATIONAL ENQUIRER. Coronavirus is real and deadly to seniors with breathing problems. The news doesnt cause mass hysteria, people do. Then these people who call it fake, get all there REAL NEWS from the internet.
shortytallz
This is dumb. Self isolation is the only way to go.
caryloyd
Where was all this hysteria in 2009-2010 with the swine flu. Just as deadly. 300 hospitalized and 60M infected in US alone while up to 575k died worldwide? So far there are 61 dead in the US though 25 were at the same senior center. We are on par for 55,000 dead from seasonal flu this year and nobody seems to care about that. Just an observation
