The Red Sox have optioned left-handed reliever Josh Osich to Triple-A Pawtucket, chief baseball officer Chaim Bloom announced Thursday (via Pete Abraham of the Boston Globe).
Osich, whom the Red Sox claimed from the White Sox last October, was competing for a spot in Boston’s bullpen before the coronavirus reared its ugly head. The 31-year-old garnered quite a bit of experience between the Giants and White Sox from 2015-19, though he wasn’t especially effective during that span. Thus far, despite a strong 48.5 percent groundball rate, Osich has pitched to a 4.88 ERA/5.14 FIP with 7.95 K/9 and 3.64 BB/9.
To his credit, Osich has been tough for same-handed hitters to deal with, as shown by their .286 weighted on-base average against him during his career. However, righties have smacked him around for a .375 wOBA. That’s not going to cut it in a league that will implement a three-batter minimum rule for pitchers whenever the regular season starts.

So I presume his split contract only pays him the $850,000 prorated amount while he is in Boston and not with the Paw Sox / Woo Sox.

The woo sox is such a dumb name. Idk why they would settle on that

So are all these moves being made by ML teams today/last couple days – optioning players to AAA – financially motivated? Like if a player remains on the ML roster starting now are they going to be collecting the salary they would be if they made the roster? Otherwise I don’t understand why any transactions are being made at this time. Like would Osich likely eventually be optioned to AAA? Yes — but if there’s no financial reason to do it now… why do it now. With no even remotely vague indication of when the season will start or even spring training for that matter — what’s the motivation for teams to be optioning players right now? Unless the league has decided salaries are going to be calculated/enforced based on roster moves made even while the season is in limbo?

Bingo. I’m sure mlb is going to agree to pay players some amount. They’ll argue it should be less if you’re not one of the 26 players that we’re going to break camp anyways

Like u said.. Osich stood about -0- chance of making the Sox 26 man roster, unless like 4-5 other relievers went down with injuries and lets be real.. I’m a RS fan, but other than Workman, Barnes, Hernandez and Taylor? There really are no jobs in that BP guaranteed. Waldon would be the next closest thing to a good odds, rest are a crapshoot.
Osich just isn’t that good.

he can’t even go to aaa team now!
