We don’t cover option decisions as a matter of course, especially during Spring Training. But … it’s a quiet news stretch when it comes to baseball transactions. And in some cases, we have seen recent decisions on optional assignments that reflect teams’ intentions on their (eventual) Opening Day rosters. After all, players optioned in mid-March were obviously not seen as having a real shot at an active roster spot.
Here’s a non-exhaustive list of players optioned over the past week, per the MLB.com transactions page, featuring those with prior big league experience:
- Jaime Barria, Anthony Bemboom, Taylor Cole, Jose Quijada & Kyle Keller (Angels)
- Aaron Barrett, Kyle McGowin & Jake Noll (Nationals)
- Adbert Alzolay, James Norwood & Colin Rea (Cubs)
- Ronald Bolanos & Adrian Morejon (Padres)
- Joe Palumbo & Kolby Allard (Rangers)
- Jose De Leon (Reds)
- Braden Bishop & Nick Margevicius (Mariners)
- Meibrys Viloria (Royals)
- Alex Jackson (Braves)
- Seby Zavala (White Sox)
- Corey Oswalt (Mets)
- John Schreiber (Tigers)
I’m not seeing any game-changers on that list.
Jose Quijada is on the Angels and is listed on the Reds
Sorry I’m not sure why this sent as a reply to you
Barria going down suprises me. he looked like he’d get a rotation spot.
I’m pretty sure Jose Quijada is on the Angels and not the Reds.
Correct. Tyler Stephenson was the other player optioned by the Reds.
John Schreiber of the Tigers is a real shocker. He is an outstanding hurler who the Tigers had high hopes for.
He needs more minor league training
Hopefully Bishop can get things figured out
Also noted as optioned on MLB.com: Tyler Stephenson (Reds), Patrick Weigel (Braves), Zack Collins (White Sox), Yermin Mercedes (White Sox), Jose Ruiz (White Sox), Ben Braymer (Nationals)
Yeah, but in this case, this is only for players who had experience in the majors before. I guess you can say Jose Ruiz should be on the list though because he has had MLB experience.
And Zack Collins
the recent Nats options were already mentioned
Aw, I hope Aaron Barrett gets called up.. nice heartwarming story
I wonder if this saves the team money? Why aren’t transactions frozen?
I think this would be a good time for the teams to tweak their rosters, some with trades because they got to see some players in person. Maybe they realized that the team isnt as solid as ” on paper” suggests.
“On paper”? Can we wipe with that?
Allard not part of the Rangers rotation? Hope the Gibson signing was worth it.
I like Allard, but they did add 3 starters over the winter. no room for Allard at the time
