For the millions of fans missing baseball on what would have been Opening Day, the Strat-O-Matic gaming company will try to help fill the void by providing a simulated version of every game originally on the schedule. Today’s action included Brock Holt hitting a three-run walkoff homer to lead the Brewers to a 7-4 win over the Cubs, a 13-inning marathon between the Rockies and Padres that saw Trevor Story hit two homers in a 10-7 Colorado victory, and Chris Archer tossing six shutout innings in a 4-1 Pirates win over Archer’s former team, the Rays.
Some (real life) notes from around baseball…
- Noah Syndergaard, Chris Sale, and Tyler Beede are a few of the pitchers who have chosen to undergo Tommy John surgeries in the days since the league-wide shutdown, which has led to some questions about when (or should) such procedures be performed given that medical facilities the world over are increasingly halting or postponing elective surgeries to free up resources for COVID-19 patients. The topic is broached in pieces from Henry Schulman of the San Francisco Chronicle and Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, each featuring comments from several medical professionals debating both sides. The issue is further complicated by the fact that there isn’t yet any nationwide standard about such practices in the United States, which is why clinics in different states can have varying approaches.
- Baseball America’s Ben Badler profiles another batch of international prospects expected to sign with MLB teams when the next international signing window opens (a date that now could be pushed back from July 2 to as late as January 2021). The Orioles, Rangers, Padres, Royals, and Rays are connected to the five players in Badler’s piece, with some contractual bonus information known for two of the youngsters. Kansas City is expected to spend “north of $1.5MM” on Dominican shortstop Daniel Vasquez, while Tampa Bay is expected to spend “a little below $2MM” on Dominican outfielder Jhonny Piron. While the dollar figures for this year’s international spending pools haven’t yet been released, the Rays already figure to have committed a big chunk of their available funds on Piron and Carlos Colmenarez, given that Badler previously described Colmenarez as “making a strong case to be the No. 1 player” in this year’s international class. This would seemingly put Colmenarez in line for a major bonus, though the Rays can always add to their international pool by trading with other teams. It’s also fair to assume that the bonus pool system could also see some type of alteration if and when the signing window doesn’t open until January.

For those baseball fans that enjoy X-Files….Now what you fear to understand in your joyless myopia is that baseball is a key to life. A rosetta stone if you will, if you just understood baseball better, all your other questions, the aliens, the conspiracies, they would all in their way be answered by the baseball Gods.

The tommy john thing seems pretty simple, travel to a region where there is little to no outbreak and pay for a rush surgery.
itslonelyatthetrop
It’s not simple. Tommy John surgery isn’t a haircut. It’s a delicate procedure and not a common one. If not done correctly, it might not work at all or it could damage the ulnar nerve could and end the pitcher’s career.
AssumesFactNotInEvidence
Tommy John surgery isn’t a haircut.
Thanks for that info, much appreciated…

Remember the days of strat-0 when used dice and had player cards. 1 side had the basic kind of game, then could flip the player card over and was like more advanced player stats type results from dice roll.
Man.. That was many decades back. Couldn’t wait until new teams were released, then would get like 4 player per team extra released.. For an extra fee of course that could purchase.

Hell yeah, I’m 31 and I remember playing. So many bragging rights.

Remember show down cards? Lol those were so fun to collect and play. That bonds and arod card were considered the best ones to get. My brother still has all those cards too lol

The U.S. Surgeon General and Coronavirus Task Force are urging all elective surgeries be paused so that masks, gloves and other resources can be preserved for people in true need. If Syndergaard and other players were true patriots they would put off their elective surgeries no matter how many millions it cost them, especially a player for New York, where millions of local fans are at risk to need those medical resources for more urgent doctors’ visits and hospitalizations.

Not a very good attempt at trolling
The Human Rain Delay
Its a compelling story but not many resources required would overlap here- He wont be clogging up public hospitals, the medical staff will either be at home or working on the elbow (being. specialists) Your looking at a couple masks and gloves here…..
Should a guy lose millions for that…idk ……Maybe he can use those millions to fight the cause better than the 12$ in supplies…whoes to say…. *You obv*
Should we insinuate hes not a true patriot- Dont think so but nice speech
Look Im not saying go out and get your g/fs melons done this weekend but not a patriot? Cmon you have No clue what Noah does for Ny, from all Ive heard hes a great guy to charity and Ny and there is value to that city if he gets back on the field healthy 2021 just like there was value in 2001 after 9-11 for the Yankees to go to one of the most exciting WS ever
Manfredsajoke
@ Manny. This is one of the dumbest posts I’ve even seen on this site. Who are you to call Thor “unpatriotic”?
hiflew
Who are you to call his post dumb? He has as much a right to his opinion as you do to disagree with it. That doesn’t make it dumb.

1. Syndergaard lives in an upscale apartment in NYC that even has room service.
ny.curbed.com/2018/4/13/17234634/mets-noah-synderg…
2. Mayor Bill de Blasio has urged NYC residents to shelter in place.
3. To conserve masks, gloves and medical resources, other patients are being told to wait on things like knee and ankle surgeries.
4. There are even 100 year-old nursing home residents who cannot have family visit to celebrate their birthdays.
5. Law and morals should apply to the rich and poor alike.
6. You would think Syndergaard would try to redeem himself as a moral leader after his embarrassing homophobic tweet back in 2012.
newyork.cbslocal.com/2012/12/18/report-new-mets-pr…
CONCLUSION: Syndergaard is being selfish and is thus more “Loki” than “Thor”! I am not saying the guy is evil or a criminal, just selfish. Describing it as not rising to patriotic levels is a fair take in my book. Indeed, public officials have urged the public to “shame” persons not doing their part to socially distance and conserve medical resources.

3 pitchers getting Tommy John is so meaningless, I cant believe anyone is made about it

Made about it

Beede is a moot point. He’s already recovering.

Curious if his rehabilitation and therefore return is delayed by the pandemic. Or if he can do something from home…

No expression of affection and fealty yet from “the Brockstar’s” biggest fan? I’m stunned.
stratcrowder
I’ve been playing Strat-o-matic since 1974. The game is in the HOF and has been around since 1961. It’s a board game as well as computer. It’s driven by absolute statistical realism. If you really love baseball, you should try it out. There are literally thousands of leagues out there. I’m commissioner of a 20-team league with members from Cali to NY, and we even have one in Tokyo, and one in Canada. It’s WAY better than fantasy because you actually call every strategic move and also play the part of being the team GM. AWESOME game.
Dorn’s Contract
You just grabbed the extreme nerd interest in me. I already play in a fantasy league. I played strat-o once when I was a kid. Fun game with the dice at the time. How do you join a league today? Do they auto assign players or is it as in-depth as the auction league roto style that I already play in. I don’t know too much about strat-o today

I’m curious about the elective surgery standard. TJ isn’t absolutely necessary relative to a firefighter that broke his/her foot while on the job. However, they want to get people back to work as quickly as reasonably possible. There are maybe 3 or 4 surgeons (depending on how “Retired” Dr. James Andrews really is) that do such high profile Tommy Johns that are orthopedic wizards to the extent that TJ is some 70-90% of their work, since the Red Sox aren’t going to let Dr. Joe Blow do surgery on Chris Sale. They could better utilize the medical equipment fighting Wuhan Virus obviously, but given the specialty of the surgeons (and the multi-millionnaires paying for it), would they get a pass? Honest question.
The Human Rain Delay
A pass for a couple gloves and masks….Id hope so but its 2020 where emotional out bursts reign king…… like you said specialists…they are either at home collecting needed unemployment funds or working on the elbow helping the economy ever so slightly by keeping people employed-
This doesnt even take into affect the value Noah provides the city of NY 2021
Sports help at a time like this…. the Yankees D backs WS of 2001 helped our country unite for a small peroid of time after 9-11

Except that there have already been cases where an Uber driver passed the disease from a passenger to a family member, etc.
Most likely the procedure involves leaving town in addition to medical resources.
This is a lower priority than fixing the postal carrier’s knee or a teacher’s ankle, and those other elective surgeries have to wait, too.
And I do not disagree with you about how important the 2001 World Series was after 9-11. True. But an epidemic is different. Every extra trip to the grocery store could cost the live of someone’s Grandma. Waiting 6-8 weeks is prudent. I am not suggesting to wait a year or more. Follow CDC guidelines.

“Outbursts,” not “out bursts.”
“Effect,” not the verb, “affect.”
Also, ellipses have three periods only. You can’t just type a random number of periods and claim it’s an ellipse. Happy to help.
btw: do reruns of sport “help at a time like this?” Because that’s all I am seeing. Also, how does one player’s TJ surgery equate to sports as a whole? Noah getting TJ does not help society cope with a stressful tragedy like a pandemic. Unless you are suggesting that we televise his surgery and that it will help Americans come together at a time of crisis.

Is anybody excited about the royals winning the world series in 2020
