Here are the latest minor signings of note from around the game, courtesy of Chris Hilburn-Trenkle of Baseball America …
- The Orioles inked righty Danny Barnes. He’s a 30-year-old reliever who has spent his entire career to date in the Blue Jays organization. Barnes saw only limited action last season but was in the majors for each of the three prior campaigns. In 120 2/3 career frames at the game’s highest level, he carries a 4.33 ERA with 8.5 K/9 and 3.8 BB/9.
- Outfielder Dustin Peterson has joined the Angels. Still just 25 years of age, Peterson has a bit of MLB experience but has spent most of his time in recent seasons in the upper minors. The former second-round pick carries a .267/.320/.389 batting line in 1,107 total plate appearances at Triple-A.
- The Athletics have signed first baseman/outfielder Brock Stassi. He got a shot in a reserve role with the Phillies in 2017 but wasn’t able to take advantage, slashing just .167/.278/.295 in ninety plate appearances. Stassi has kicked around the indy ranks, Mexican League, and upper minors since.
- Former MLB righty Allen Webster is on board with the Nationals. He’ll be looking to crack the majors for the third-straight season at 30 years of age. The former top prospect has never managed to carve out a steady role at the game’s highest level, but he has registered 134 1/3 total innings, working to a cumulative 6.03 ERA.

I get jazzed when the minor transactions come ‘round.
clepto
slow day at Blockbuster Video, I take it?
PapiElf
Is Allen Webster considered a “former MLB righty” if he just got signed by a MLB team?
pdxbrewcrew
To a minor league contract. He’s still a “former” major leaguer.

Rather take a flyer on ex Sox kid (and LA) De La rosa than Webster. De La Rosa was never afraid to throw his upper 90’s FB on the inner half of the plate and Webster never did. no matter how hard u throw, using half the plate was a recipe to be a loser in this league.
DarkSide830
yeah, De La Rosa looks like a fascinating comeback option. i dont know why no one has picked him up

What’s really impressive is how Webster has been pitching at age 30 for the past 3 years.

Nice

You could read it that way.
I understood Jeffs original intent…..

De La Rosa signed a new deal in Japan earlier this winter. Pitched 26 games all in relief there after being released by the Diamondbacks. If he has a full season in Japan like the partial season he had last year I would fully expect him to return to the MLB in 2021.

I remember when Webster was supposed to be the big get in the Red Sox/Dodgers mega deal in 2012. Did not live up to that at all but could still find success in a bullpen somewhere someday.

Barnes is going to surprise people. Heard it here first.

If Barnes is healthy and fully recovered he’ll be a premium add to the bullpen. I’d he isn’t at full health, he’ll be back at AAA quickly.

Barnes had 15 appearances the first month of 2018 and was on-pace to have nearly 90 appearances for the season. That probably hurt him May onward because he was lights-out to start the season. Also pitched well in 2017 and looked good in 2016. Hope he does well with Baltimore.

How could Allen Webster be 30 years old for three seasons in a row?
bobtillman
It’s simple. Webster has a picture of himself in his living room, and the picture ages, Webster doesn’t.
He’s going to write a novel about it under a pseudonym, probably be something Wilde…..

Thanks you MLBTR for the update. I thought there would have been a few more than this? But I guess not since the MLB season is about to start

If you check the weekly MLB transactions page in USA Today Sports Weekly there are dozens upon dozens of roster moves.
I guess MLBTR just shows the interesting ones…..
