- The Pirates have signed infielder Sherman Johnson to a minor-league contract with an invitation to MLB spring training (h/t to Andersen Pickard). The 29-year-old tallied 11 MLB plate appearances with the 2018 Angels but has otherwise spent his entire pro career in the minors. In parts of four Triple-A seasons, Johnson has compiled a .241/.347/.364 slash while mostly lining up at second and third base. The Florida State product entered pro ball as a 12th-round pick in 2012.
Poetic that a Sherman would be signed in March.
As long as it’s not in Atlanta
His performance there was a real scorcher
And not very civil
Sherman is a good pickup for the pirates reconstruction.
this signing will certainly increase the team’s total WAR.
Lol
I’ll have to Grant you that!
This thread has entertained me. Thank you

Sherman was a 14th round pick not 12th
Sherman Johnson pitched in two games in 2018 at AAA Salt Lake. In a game on August 30 of that year, the Bees played the Reno Aces. The game went 11 innings and Mr. Johnson got credited for the loss because I guess they ran out of pitchers. They only used five pitchers that night, one of which was him (The other pitchers were Ivan Pineyro, Deck McGuire(!), Junichi Tazawa (!!), and Conor Lillis-White, for your information). He didn’t do too bad for a position player though. The play by play looks like this:
Chris Owings triple, Ildemaro Vargas scores (because they put the man on second in the minors to start extra innings)
Socrates Brito popout to 3B
Kevin Cron single, Chris Owings scores
Rey Fuentes 4-6-3 DP
He didn’t do too bad! The weirdest part of all this is that all the game stories on the internet do not say a thing about Mr. Johnson pitching. I would think that if a position player had to pitch in a 2-2 game in the 11th inning, it would be somewhat of a story. This is quite a mystery to me why this sort of thing happened.
Because it’s a minor league footnote.
Sherman was a fringe five guy Carson Cistulli loved.
Great guy. Always smiles and takes time for autographs and pictures with fans.
Solid glove, light in the bat.
Good for him. I never thought Mr. Peabody treated Sherman well at all; making him clean up the mess in the Wayback Machine (you know how those dogs are).
The shermanator will be his nickname if he sticks around
