The Red Sox announced Monday that they’ve acquired minor league catcher Jhonny Pereda from the Cubs as the player to be named later in the January trade that sent righty Travis Lakins from Boston to Chicago. Lakins, oddly enough, is no longer even in the Cubs organization; he was claimed off waivers by the Orioles just 10 days after the Cubs acquired him. Pereda is not on the 40-man roster, so a corresponding move isn’t necessary for the Sox.
Pereda, 24 next month, had a rough year in Double-A this past season, slashing .241/.336/.305 with just two home runs and 16 doubles in 398 plate appearances. Pereda caught a third of the runners who attempted to steal against him and won a minor league Gold Glove Award, but he also turned in poor framing metrics, per Baseball Prospectus. Baseball America ranked Pereda as the Cubs’ No. 26 prospect last offseason, before the poor 2019 showing, calling him a potential backup catcher with a bit of offensive upside due to his on-base skills (while also pointing out an utter dearth of power).
Regardless of how Pereda turns out, things unfolded in a sub-optimal manner for the Cubs, who presumably hoped that they’d be able to pass Lakins through waivers and retain him without committing a 40-man roster spot to the righty. That didn’t prove to be the case, however, as the Orioles (who hold the No. 2 waiver priority) quickly nabbed him and have continued to carry him on the 40-man roster.

What can you make of this, Jhonny?
astrosfansince1974
Well, I can make a hat, I can make a brooch, I can make a pterodactyl!
chicagofan1978
Man I need to find those shows on YouTube some of the funniest stuff ever. Props to you both for the reference
chicagofan1978
Crap that’s airplane, I thought it was from the police squad shows. Same thing though

Looks like I picked the wrong week to stop sniffing glue…
tigersfan1320
Thought at first that Jhonny Peralta was attempting to make a comeback
Steve Adams
I did a double-take when the Red Sox press release hit my inbox, haha.
theredsoxrule
haha i thought the same thing
Eatdust666
Lol same, because the last name is not too far off lol.
hammer_time24
Man, I’m glad I’m not the only one.
DarkSide830
not a bad return, but I still think getting rid of Lakins was a bad move for a team with little pitching.
chitown311
So the Cubs just sent a minor league prospect to the Red Sox to complete the trade they made for a guy that is no longer with them? #thatscub

News flash: you’re an idiot. But I love that you keep commenting on Cubs news. Quite hilarious

Still not as bad as trading Fernando Tatis for the ghost of a former major league pitcher.
bobtillman
Theo’s (or whomever) is losing their touch. Even sacrificing a 26th ranked prospect (in a poor system) for someone you’re going to lose on waivers is just depleting inventory. Somebody was asleep at the switch.

Agreed Bob.

I wonder how many times his 1st name get misspelled?

Guy struggled in Double AA!!! Another stellar pickup for Bloom. We are back baby!!! The Eastern Division is ours with our great pitching staff and bullpen!
Mlb1971
Omg, who did you expect to get for Travis Lakins ……Mike Trout. Quit complaining already !!!!!!!!! AL34 complaining is all you ever do. Didn’t your mom ever tell you – “If you can’t say something nice don’t say anything at all”

Right to free speech is still in effect in this country although the Democrats are looking to put a stop to it
stevep-4
Really? How exactly is free speech in jeopardy? Seems like any jackass can say anything he wants these days.
stevep-4
Evidence abounds that any jackass of any political stripe can say just about anything these days. ^
its_happening
He didn’t say free speech was in-jeopardy Steve, he just said one party wants to put a stop to it. It’s like telling a son or daughter not to go somewhere. It doesn’t mean it’s going to happen.
See? Big difference.
capnfatback
No, it’s more like saying that the executive zeeblooni made crossinfriss on the nuzznuzz, except that what I just wrote makes more sense.

You guys suck go get another room

I think we’d all rather stab our eyeballs out with a fork than listen to WAJGH moderate a blowhard political party debate! Im issuing a cease and desist order on this hodgepodge!

This is going to be a very bad year for Boston and I am not happy about giving up a front line pitcher and an MVP outfielder and not getting any pitching in return when Bloom knew Sale needed TJ Surgery and the Pneumonia was a BS story. Don’t be a Kool Aid Drinker

The Red Sox would not have won the division or World Series even if they had kept Price or Betts (for one last year). Better to rest and reload. My first 33 years as a Red Sox fan had exactly zero championships, so I appreciate that Henry & Co. have been the best owners of any team this century with 4 World Series titles. No team wins a title every year now that there is CBT.
Look at the rosters from 04, 07, 13, and 18. They are significantly different.
I agree that there is free speech and that certain parties and media groups threaten it by constantly misrepresenting what the truth is. As a result CNN’s ratings have fallen off a cliff, so I guess people are voting with their viewership.

Bloom needs a chance to fix the problems with the roster that existed before he got to Boston and not every signing will make a difference this year and many are simply roster filler. He is trying to create a competitive team not just for 2020 (which was never going to happen), but for the long term. Many of the DFAs went unclaimed, so obviously he has had a lot of work to do. I am looking forward to seeing how Bloom does over the next 3 to 5 years then we can compare him performance to Cherington, DD, and Theo. I think he will compare favorably.
AL34
I agree to fix it but pick up a pitcher in a trade
4WSsince04
I agree, I wish there was some one worth picking up who is available. Starting pitching is in such short supply that no team is willing to trade any pitch who half decent.
Dorothy_Mantooth
And this is the last time we heard Jhonny Pereda’s name…
Not a big get for Boston nor a big loss for Chicago
Capi
I think you’ll hear of Pereda when he makes it to the majors… I think he will.
Not for his bat, but catchers that can play some D usually stick around for a while.
steve dolan
Considering the pitching situation in Boston, making a trade to give up a pitcher for a non-pitcher is just inconceivable. As usual, the Red Sox do not prioritize pitching the way they should.
jekporkins
This is how thirsty I am for baseball – I am not a Sox or Cubs fan in the slightest and I read this from beginning to end. Twice.

Hadn’t they already picked up a number of minor league catchers this off-season?
4WSsince04
Plawecki and Lecroy have MLB experience. Juan Centeno (resign) and Jeff Bandy are AAA roster filler. Connor Wong is a prospect, and now Peraza, did I miss any.
Bloom is over hauling the AAA depth and has added 13 players to the 40 man roster since his arrival (roughly 1/3 of the 40-man in 5 months). It is not a bad thing to get new blood…..not every addition is a Price/Sale/JD Martinez.
oldtimer
Once again Theo looks like a chump! Paying for something you already discarded! Smooth!
Capi
The trade was agreed upon way before he discarded anyone.
4WSsince04
There will be baseball this year.
Encouraging news: three new medical studies show a commonly available anti-malaria drug known as chloroquine aka chloroquine phosphate is showing strong results against COVID-19 infections in both China and South Korea. Excerpts from three studies, including one published in Nature ……
Chloroquine and Plaqunil are established drugs that are not experimental and made as generics by multiple companies.
My wife is a Doctor of Pharmacy and says chloroquine and plaqunil seem to be curing people within several days. Too bad the mass media is more interested in scaring everyone than putting out real information.
My total guess is spring training by mid May and regular season early June.
