The Astros final roster spot will be a two-man showdown between Myles Straw and Garrett Stubbs, per MLB.com’s Brian McTaggart. Of course, this particular “camp battle” has as much to do with the pieces around the players as the players themselves. For that matter, it may come down to a conversation between Dusty Baker and new GM James Click. The two are likely still developing a cohesive philosophy when it comes to roster construction. That they have an extra roster spot in the 26th man this season ought to help smooth the waters. Still, there’s a decision to be made here, and as with many clubs, the decision may come down to just how many catchers they want to have on the roster. Let’s take a deeper dive into the candidates.
- One would think that Myles Straw is the frontrunner to make the opening day roster. Without him, the Astros don’t have a natural backup for George Springer in center. With Jake Marisnick now on the Mets, Straw is the likeliest candidate to fill that void as a pinch-runner and late-game defensive replacement. Josh Reddick would probably fill that role as a backup were Straw not to make the team, though it would be surprising if that were the case for the entire season. Even if Straw doesn’t make the cut, expect him to occupy a roster spot at times throughout the season.
- Stubbs, 26, has spent the last two seasons in Triple-A, and he’s certainly ready enough to get some time as a backup in 2020. He has a good approach at the plate, will take his walks and doesn’t strike out (16.2% K-rate last season). He’s reliable enough defensively, but it’s hard to see where the Astros would benefit from rostering a third catcher. Martin Maldonado will be the primary starter, and he could be used as a defense replacement in games he doesn’t start. On the other hand, they may risk burning their bench by pinch-hitting for Maldonado in spots. Still, Dustin Garneau is on hand for those occasions. Garneau has some power potential, but Kyle Tucker or Josh Reddick will be the first lefty bat off the bench, while Aledmys Diaz will be the guy from the right side. One backup catcher ought to suffice.
- The sleeper candidate here is Abraham Toro. He debuted last season with a .218/.303/.385 line over a mere 85 plate appearances. Toro offers a quality combination of speed/power and the ability to play either corner in the infield as well as second base in a pinch. He’s a switch-hitter, which provides some utility beyond the overlapping skillset he shares with Diaz or Yuli Gurriel, but he also has options available. The Astros, therefore, will feel no pressure to keep him on the major league roster. That said, Toro gained some popularity last season, a quality the Astros are short on these days. Having a young player that fans can root for unequivocally may get Toro an extra look.
We’re assuming here, of course, that the Astros will go with an eight-man bullpen. That’s hardly a foregone conclusion, though it’s the likeliest result in the case of most teams, and given that the Astros have some uncertainty at the back end of their rotation, they may enjoy having an extra arm to leverage until the number four and five starters establish some consistency.
Lol the trash can
Astros aren’t my favorite team but they still have a lot of talent. Getting tired of all the “they cheated” talk. They just got caught all the teams cheat. I think they still win the AL West with the A’s taking a wild card spot.
Getting tired of it ? Then hold on, it’s going to be a long season
Im on the fence. It sucks hearing about all day every day. And yes. Its gonna be a long season for the Astros.
“Getting tired of all the “they cheated” talk. They just got caught all the teams cheat. ”
The understatement of the year. If you cannot grasp the severity of what they did then @gmenfan is right, its going to be a long season for you.
Imagine being the Astros kid last year that was called up and then giving pause saying “Is this what it’s really like up here? (*banging*)” Now he’s labelled a cheater for life. Now think about the opposing pitcher making his first start against the Astros and getting lit the F up right after his pitching coach and bullpen catcher said his warmup breaking ball was as sharp as it’s ever been on that day. The players involved deserve all the flak they’ll be getting.
And this actually happened? The Astros learned they were “behind the times” from a guy that just spent several years with the Yankees, who, with the Red Sox, were investigated for a similar charge the following year.
They learned it from the Yankees, taught it to the Red Sox (Alex Cora), and the Brewers and Dodgers have been accused of the same thing.
Technically they’ve had a 26th man for the last 3 years. The camera man.
Well played
The monitor
Jose Altuve’s step stool.
Jesus Christ, this is going to have 200 “dah garbug cahn lamoooo!!” replies, isn’t it?
I’m not sure Jesus had anything to do with a lack of integrity.
Jesus was a liberal…. he invented lack of integrity.
Hopefully more than just 200. This is a popular site.
dah garbug cahn lamoooo!!
Pretty sure the article was designed to create that type of response.
Well played MLBTR, well played.
They cheated. We’ll milk the garbage can jokes as long as want to.
Basically making garbage can jokes is the new trend people follow t0 be cool and edgy.
Garbage can milk is disgusting.
Think it just demonstrates how pissed off people are at the Houston Asterisks
Zing…gottem coach. Now go sit down
And the buzzers
Straw has more versatility, as he can play middle infield, and has an outstanding walk rate. Pretty much an extra base hit every time he walks with his speed.
Nope. The other options listed in the other comments seem more likely.
23rd man – Garbage can
24th man – Monitor
25th man – Buzzers
26th man – Altuve’s step stool
AAA – Straw
Designated for assignment- Altuve’s tattoo artist.
LMAO
Plus, he knows Morse Code.
I appreciate the legit response, 1225. The attempts at comedy on this site are increasingly annoying. The puns, my god, the puns.
But they write themselves.
Don’t blame the vessels through which they arrive.
… “they write themselves” – exactly.
30 Parks = number of parks in which the Astros cheated.
@Gocats that was great
I’m so sick of this garbage can stuff. Weren’t the other teams able to hear the trash cans as well? Are you telling me that none of the catchers or umpires were able to put the pieces together that a trash can banged right before a breaking ball every time? These are pro players in a game designed to figure out subtle signals and they didn’t know? Yeah, I don’t buy it.
Yea all the video footage, all the players admitting to it, all the complaints given to MLB, I wouldn’t buy it either. Not enough evidence, it’s a shame Manfred unjustly attacked the great Houston Astros organization.
I’d hate to live in a world of denial…
You mean Egypt?
I dunno, man. It’s almost like other teams noticed and said something about it and the commissioners office actively decided not to do anything about it until it came out publicly.
It’s honestly pathetic if they really did get multiple complaints over the course of 2017 and did nothing about it. I get they wouldn’t be able to get to the bottom of it without the players interviews, but it just looks so bad. They basically admitted that their investigation into the Yankees and Red Sox was meaningless in 2017 since they wouldn’t have been able to find anything anyways.
It’s not IF; it’s a FACT that there were complaints filed in 2017.
Cry me a river.
Awww….a formerly arrogant Astros fan wants to blame others for his team’s cheating, disrespect of the game, and lack of honest remorse. Gonna be a long season for the Garbage Pail Kids, better buckle up.
I’m starting to think stripping bothers Astericks and The Dirty Sox of their titles is the way to go…
Sealbeach Comber, I own a shirt with a hand on the front sticking up the middle finger. On the middle finger is an Astros world series ring and underneath the hand it says “my apologies”. Nothing we say or do can change what happened, including wishing they won without doing it. With that being said, your comment comes off as a little arrogant. Hate us, Sealbeach Comber, hate us.
No, it will just go down forever that the Astros do not deserve the championship no matter what Manfred of their homer fans say or do.
Nrd1138, I could deny it but they did it. I could accept it and they did it. I could abandon them. Guess what? They did it. I could get a second dog and they did it. They cheated. There is nothing myself or any other Astros fan could say or do that changes that. Time to be the villain. Flags fly forever.
goastros123, I guess I’m not having a lot of sympathy for Astros fans that are defending what they did…or feeling sorry for themselves because their is no easy way to resolve things.
I for one kinda like where goastros123 is coming from. I accept his honesty, humility and sincerity.
M04ever, I’ve been following the team since 2005 and I can either continue to support them or hop off the wagon. I would rather remain loyal. I don’t ever want to be a bandwagoner. Because of that, since they’re so hated, I’m just gonna go with it and be the villain. Flags fly forever.
You mean….tainted rings stay tainted forever?
I’m sure that you haven’t noticed yet, but while investigating the root of your problem(all these harassing posts and going backward), I realized that you may have a legitimate complaint with the Houston Astros organization…
You get “Dumbest Comment of the Day” award.

Straw’s MiLB numbers are really wild. Great plate discipline and speed and negative power.
Straw seems like a good choice. Can play the OF and SS and has speed.
Trash can.
A drummer!
Bang once for Trash Can
Bang twice for Buzzers
Mike’s Trout, that’s really funny! By the way, how’s that Tyler Skaggs death investigation going? You know, the one where the Angels Director of Communications, Eric Kay, provided drugs that KILLED an Angels pitcher Tyler Skaggs? The investigation where Kay said he told two other Angels executives about Skaggs’ drug use? The investigation where Kay also named FIVE other Angels players as opiates-abusers? Asking for a friend…
What does Mike Trout have anything to do with Skaggs’ death? Not his job to help others beat addiction. Addicts need to help themselves first and foremost.
Their 26th man is gonna be the audience. We’re gonna help with all kinds of useful advice.
Ringo Starr
Both those guys deserve it, no doubt about it. But the Astros made a deal in the offseason, so now they have to give Rob Manfred’s nephew a job.
Carlos Pah-Rum-Pum-Pum-Pum
something something trash can
I like Straw. They need a back up center fielder. Springer has injury history. The teams needs an experienced centerfielder who is ready to go just in case.
I am still surprised they dumped Marisnick for 3M. I would have preferred to have Straw, Toro, and Stubbs all in the minors getting daily reps.
Flags Fly Forever!!!
Tainted ones don’t count.
To you they don’t. To the record books they do. The Reds 1919 title is tainted thanks to the White Sox but MLB let it stand.
The 1919 Reds didn’t cheat. It’s not remotely the same thing. And while we’re talking about the Black Sox, they were banned for life, so the dark arts boys should receive the same punishment, right?
Technically, that 1919 title of the Reds is tainted because they didn’t earn that title. The White Sox threw the series. Makes no sense to let them keep it for good behavior. On the subject of tainted titles, yes the Reds 1919 title fits.
You’re talking about where the other team cheated to lose though right? 29 teams fans think otherwise
The Reds didn’t earn it any more than the Astros did. It doesn’t matter if the Reds didn’t cheat. As for people disagreeing, that’s fine. Any title marred in controversy like the 1919 title or the 2017 title is “tainted”.
So you admit that the Houston Asterisks 2017 title is tainted…welcome to the very large club
I don’t mind admitting it.
it doesn’t count. *
I’m just here for the comments…
Myles will be the Straw to that stirs the trash can.
I am not an Astros fan. But I have to agree with hiflew. Other teams, umps media had to notice. Why was nothing said at the time? Something doesnt add up.
People did speak up, but the Commissioner’s Office didn’t do anything, until Fiers blew the whistle.
I think Jomboy should get a lot of credit for his video sleuthing as well. The hammer dropped right after he posted that episode.
It was said at the time by multiple players. Here in NY, the Yankees were all over it and it got some media coverage, but without proof it was just rumors and gossip. By the way the reports showed multiple teams accusing the Astros. So tons of people were saying things. It just takes a long time to investigate.
why any team, namedly an AL team, would use 3 roster spots on pure catchers is beyond me.
I think that Straw should get the spot because of Springer’s injury history and the lack of a backup and right hitting outfielders.
That said, Stubbs is not a “pure catcher”. He can play second and left field and has plus speed. He could end up being Biggio 2.0
Man, is “roster” a verb now?
I common baseball usage it has been for a while now. Works for me. You didn’t have trouble understanding what was meant, did you? That should be good enough. Not like any commenters here could successfully write for MLBTR.
If Washington didn’t figure out how to disguise their signs at Minute Maid Park they would have lost the World Series.
The end.
They still almost lost. Should’ve put Cole in.
I agree. Point is, this has been blown out of proportion. The Apple watch story is every bit as bad as trashcans yet nobody is talking about it because it involves the precious Yankees.
I also don’t blame the trainers on the recent number of injuries with the Yankees.
Houston’s just the big fish that was caught.
“Houston’s just the big fish that was caught.”
This is the general opinion of all Astros fans, and while I think there’s a certain truth to it, I also think what the Astros did was beyond what any other team was doing. Players around the league were furious over the Astros scandal. If every team were doing what the Astros doing, why would there be so much outrage amongst current players?
I am not an Astros fan. Let’s get that out of the way.
Players are competitive and will be upset at Houston for taking things too far. But let’s not pretend they are the only team cheating the system. Said competitive players are willing to put things into their body that might get them suspended, injured or worse. What Houston did was bad, very bad. The reaction is over the top. No talk over Apple Watches. None. We did not have proof 25 years ago that players were taking PEDs but some speculated. We don’t have proof of what great lengths teams are taking to win and cheat like Houston but we can speculate they are doing it.
The steroid comparison doesn’t work at all for me. While steroids were widespread, it was never a teamwide institution. The Apple Watch incident was investigated. It doesn’t seems to be anything as serious as what the Astros were routinely doing. I get it; there’s other cheating in baseball, but I don’t view the Astros as being singled out because they were caught. This scandal went above and beyond what the majority of players deem normal.
You’re missing the point.
The measurement of cheating isn’t the comparison; it’s one fan having a feeling that something is going on with no proof to back it up. A simple speculation through experience and prior knowledge of cheating in a sport that has been going on for decades.
The Astros were singled out because they were caught. Based on prior baseball history and experience we cannot rule out other teams practicing the very same concepts as the Astros. It would be foolish to do so.
As for Apple watches, it’s a big problem MLB chose to ignore.
The Yankees and Red Sox were both fined for the use of Apple Watches. So I don’t yjink it was ignored at all.
Thanks for input explaining slow response of league on the trash cans. Had my head in sand back then lol.
I guess it boils down to who wants to get plunked more, since I’m sure they are going to lead in one category for the season: Hit batsmen.
That last sentence makes my head spin.
If everyone knew, why didnt they say hey, when I call for a fastball, give me the change up? The hitter would be swinging way too soon. Or, if you hear them bang on the trash can, throw a fastball.
Tommy Lee is the obvious choice.
Pani, Tim Pani…
More to be discovered. Why is the press not confirming that Houston Astros wore buzzers. Altuve DEFINITELY WORE A BUZZER. Bust the cheating scum bags!!! MLB, knows this and is withholding evidence. MLB is terrible.
hey now let’s just lay off the garbage man and put the other guy on the hot seat awhile. the guy from Radio Shack who sold them all those wires and buzzers
Asterisks to sign Dennis “Trash Can” Floyd to be 26th man,,,
They should change the name of the assbros stadium to Rubbermaid Park.
Houston Assbros. Lol
I like Assbros, but I like Asstrolls even better!
Dear Asterisk fans,
I feel for those of you who are legit and honest to yourself about this scandal. Your city had been through a lot and it was a great story at the time. However, your loyalty is misplaced. You should be the most angry at the offending players, it was those players that cheappened what would have been a great accomplishment.
I got to see a team I like win it all thanks to those offending players. I’ll gladly take the tainted championship regardless of their wrong doing. I’d trade for it a million dollars or a championship won by them, the Rockets or the Texans where no cheating was involved. That’s it. FLAGS FLY FOREVER. HATE US.
Evidence of why the trash franchise needs to be stripped of the title, trophy and flag. You are clearly not the fan I’m talking about.
TAINTED RINGS ARE TAINTED FOREVER!
Thank you for your honesty. You’re a dick, but at least you’re an honest dick.
I wonder who all the “buzz” will be about. Maybe we should “(garbage) can” this conversation until later in the spring.
If it’s between those two, Straw no contest. Personally I like Stubbs more than Garneau…
