Major League Baseball announced some changes within its baseball operations department, including the hirings of the newly-retired Gregor Blanco and Nick Hundley. Some other familiar names will be taking on new roles, as head of baseball operations Joe Torre will now be a special assistant to commissioner Rob Manfred. Taking over Torre’s former job as the head of the ops department is former right-hander Chris Young, whose new title is senior VP of on-field operations, initiatives and strategy. This portfolio covers, as per the league’s press release, “issues that affect play on the field, including oversight of umpiring, playing rules and regulations, on-field standards and discipline, pace of play and other special projects.” Young has worked for the league since May 2018, coming on the heels of a 17-year pro career that included 1297 2/3 innings pitched over parts of 13 MLB seasons.
More from around the baseball world….
- Some of the top outfield prospects in the 2020-21 international draft class are profiled by Baseball America’s Ben Badler, who also details which teams are expected to sign these players on July 2. The Reds, Pirates, Red Sox, and Rangers are all thought to have seven-figure bonuses lined up for four players from the Dominican Republic, though the Astros are reportedly ready to pay what may be the biggest bonus given to any player in the 2020-21 class — a deal in the neighborhood of $4MM to 21-year-old Cuban outfielder Pedro Leon. Because of his age, Leon is already eligible to sign, though he will wait until the opening of the next July 2 window because most teams have exhausted most or all of their funds from their 2019-20 international signing pools. The int’l market will take on added importance for the Astros over the next two years, as the club’s pipeline of top young talent will be limited after losing their top two picks in both the 2020 and 2021 amateur drafts as part of their punishment for the sign-stealing scandal.
- The Royals didn’t waste time in their pursuit of Maikel Franco, as assistant GM Rene Francisco called Franco the day after the Phillies non-tendered the third baseman, Lynn Worthy of the Kansas City Star writes. Franco and the Royals agreed to a one-year, $2.95MM deal within a few weeks’ time of Francisco’s early expression of interest, and Franco has since been diligently working with Royals coaches to overhaul his approach at the plate. Rather than the grounder-heavy results that defined so much of his stint in Philadelphia, Franco is putting a particular focus on getting the ball in the air.

The Astros shouldn’t be allowed to sign Pedro Leon

I agree. Big 10-4

How about Leon Pedro?

No, Pedro from Napoleon Dynamite. Vote for Pedro!

No, I’m voting for Pedro Sanchez. Gosh !

Losing top 2 picks in rule 4 draft is a whole lot stiffer than super wildcards in any IFA where many (most) are nothing but 16-17YO kids not even been to much schooling, just trained by buscoes, who are 100% out for themselves.
whynot 2
If that was the case, they should not be allowed to give signing bonuses over over a million for the next couple of seasons to match their ban from the amateur draft
thebaseballfanatic
Wait, there’s a Rule 4 draft? Last I checked there was only a Rule 5 draft…
tuckshop25
June amateur draft is technically called the rule 4 draft

Yeah Houston hasn’t gained any talent from the international market. Not Yordan, not Altuve, nothing
They should have been banned from signing international guys from multiple years too. They stole a title, nearly a 2nd, and for 3 years screwed teams playing fairly. There’s no “too harsh”
stros1fan
They didn’t “nearly steal a 2nd title.” You can buy into false conspiracy theories all you want, but we can make them up on every team. There is zero evidence they cheated in 2019…zero!
stratcrowder
Said the stros fan. There’s nowhere to hide pal. Cheating is effing cheating.
puhl
Deal with haters! Your only pissed we cheated better than you did.
Astros baby!! Sign them all!
sambino
You should be so proud of your team the Houston Trashcanss!

You seem to be so proud of your Houston Trashstros cheating it’s pretty sad.

Enjoy that one and only tainted championship ’cause you ain’t winning again, Spanky.
Rudy Zolteck
Lol Yankee fans every day on here trying to call other teams tainted. So rich
stratcrowder
What, no WS wins for you?
Rhino
Stros should be able to sign whoever they want. Cry me some more alligator tears, hate us cause you ain’t us!
stratcrowder
Thanking God I ain’t you. Cheaters.
Coal tender
Absolutely no International signing for Pedro Leon for the cheater Astros.
stros1fan
Maybe you’re not up to date, but the Astros can sign Pedro Leon and have agreed with him for $4M.
bhambrave
The Astros should have lost all of their international money for two years.
angt222
I wouldn’t take their international bonus pool money. Just ban them from making International signings for 2 years. Once the term is up they can utilize whatever Int’l $ they had frozen.
DarkSide830
the former dictates the latter, and is less bendable of a rule.

*here comes a bunch of cry babies complaining about the astros*
dynamite drop in monty
Seriously. We have an entire season of this to look forward to. Dozens and dozens of knuckle draggers with nothing to offer to the convo than “but mah trash cans!”

I’ve counted one mention of trash cans in this thread so far. And the winner is…

Well, two people. One particularly sensitive fan.
Buckle up, it’s gonna be a long season. Look at it this way: the fans didn’t cheat.
burtgummer
People are ignorant
They got busted and are paying the penalty, time to move on
thatdudetg
The Astros should be limited on their international signings, too.
Their punishment was weak.
takeitback
It wasn’t as weak as the punishment the other teams using technology to steal signs received.
JustCheckingIn
The one still under investigation lmfao
Coal tender
I was advocating that MLB should do a player dispersal on all its starting players spread across all of the other major league teams. Let the “Trashcanners” rebuild from scratch. To allow the Astros some semblance of competitiveness let the other clubs disperse some of their marginal players off their 40 man rosters to fill the “Trashcans” vacant positions.
gronk
44 , Welcome to my world! I’m a Patriots fan by the way.
TheAdrianBeltre
Has Cora taken the Video Coordinator job that Belichick offered?
dlevin11
I think Cora’s holding out until after MLB finishes their Red Sox investigation. So far they have said they will be finished before the start of Spring Training.
sambino
Lol!
BobSacamano
I understand dfa Franco, but non-tender Cesar Hernandez..not so much
jchiaratti
Because his arb figure was like 10 million
BobSacamano
Good players earn good money. He went to Cleveland for $6.25m, imo that’s team friendly for a guy like Cesar
AndyMeyer
That’s right about what he should make. $12 million for a second baseman with a 1.7fWAR is too much
jchiaratti
He was good at a point in time, he’s been below average over the last two years, hence why the Indians were able to sign him for what they did (and only signed a 1 year deal)
Pax vobiscum
I wish Franco great success and I think he’ll enjoy it given the right coaching. Regrettably Franco’s tenure with the Phillies was not blessed with good coaching. Actually the Phillies minor league system under Amaro and Klentak has been devoid of good coaching and developmental strategy.
dynamite drop in monty
After awhile it’s really up to the player to perform or not. Blaming “developmental strategy” can only go so far.
Pax vobiscum
You’re right considering the Phillies have developed so many major league players in the last 15 years.
nythefan
There is still time before the season starts. The league can still hand out punishments for the astros for the international draft and I think the league will come down on the Red Sox for their involvement with sign stealing. Just because Cora was let go, does not let the Sox off the hook. I can’t imagine what these Astro’s games will be like. Will fans throw trash onto the fields in protest? I’m dreading going to an astros game and constantly hearing banging on trash cans… not good for baseball. Honestly it can go either way and I am a baseball fan.. not just a Yankee fan.
BobSacamano
MLB fans have been giving a lot of crap to the Astros fan base for no reason.. It’s undeserving. I feel like you guys suffer more than the actual dirtbags. I can’t imagine if my team did that. I support Astro fans 100%. You guys deserve the WS, but the actual team…idk
dynamite drop in monty
Well said, Bob.
JustCheckingIn
Most Astro fans openly parade with pride that their team cheated and are happy to cheer for them
They deserve to be called out. Sorry your panties are in a bunch. Maybe don’t cheat for3 years and steal a title, then complain people don’t like you?
hammer_time24
That’s the problem. The fans had absolutely no control over what happened. The Astros themselves should obviously be punished, but the fans are hurting enough.
reds2010
Then perhaps they shouldn’t be trying to salve their injured pride by beating their chest in public forums about how great their team is. I get your point about not bashing the fans for their team’s actions. But some of them, quite obviously, deserve to be called out. And, though I have not engaged in it myself, I certainly understand fans of other teams taking it all a bit personally and lashing out. Especially fans of some of those teams who feel cheated of titles and WS rings.
whyhayzee
yankee fans have already thrown more trash on the field than gets picked up in a year by the New York City sanitation department.
stros1fan
Not unless there is further evidence of wrongdoing beyond the 2017 and 2018 season. The punishment has been levied and it is what it is.
CardsFan77
Oh seriously shut up!!!!!! Im tired of anyone even having an opinion that would somewhat support wjat the Astros did…. They @$!@d up!! They assumed nobody would find out.. No different than the PED era… All or most of the teams we root for habe had a falling from grace due to embarrassing situations.. You have to conceide defeat sometimes and have humility… As a cards fan, do you know how embarrassed we were because of some low level exec hacking Astros email?????? Forrest damn Gump wasnt that stupid!! Although, in hindsight, he COULD have been googling “well made trash cans” and poof! In just saying you can defend the Astros, Barry Bonds,McGwire, Clemens or even the Latino lover from the Pirates (Vasquez?) The point is if you are an Astros fan, you should be mad at your TEAM!! Thay are the ones that embarrased their fans
takeitback
Not mad at all. Definitely not embarrassed. If anything I feel sorry for fans of other teams because you guys post negatively on every Astro related link and sit on your high horse like the Astros were the only team doing this. It’s amazing that fans can bury their heads in the sand on a topic like this, and live life so ignorantly.
So no, I’m not mad at the Astros for doing what everyone else did. Nor am I embarrassed that the Astros got caught. I honestly couldn’t care less. They have been one of the best teams in baseball the last three years, so what is there to be upset about?
CardsFan77
*can’t and ok im done…. Im not correcting all those typos….
terry g
I’m not an Astro fan but MLB has punished them. Whether you think it was harsh enough doesn’t matter one bit. Move on. Get over it. I’m so tired of hearing arm GM’s that can see the future and see the past in only black and white.
JustCheckingIn
Good luck with telling everyone how to feel about the biggest cheaters in 100 years
Rudy Zolteck
Lol what a drama queen. They were even better on the road that year. Cope some more man. Nothing “common sense” about any of your posts.
Rexalint
You call getting the manager and GM out is a punishment ? Give me a break. Not a single player was punished and they still have the title and all the perks that went with it. Including guys being rewarded with massive contracts. It was only a mere slap on the wrist. And chump change for the owner.
disgruntledreader 2
“International draft class,” Mark? Foreshadowing, or just a brain cramp?
legendsoh
As a Pirates fan, I have been watching the new GM Ben Cherington operating different than Neil Huntington. We still have the same worst owner in baseball–granted. It does appear though that we will be landing a front line international player or maybe two with the money he has been accruing. The only way for them to get better is to drastically scout better, draft better and develop better. People hate it as all patience is gone but I’m tired of AAAA players. It’s time to really build an organization from the ground up the right way.
Tony B
Astros players should have been suspended like PED users. Cheating is cheating and should have consequences to those who did it. I feel bad for Hinch — he actually tried to stop it. But if a PED violation (even accidental) gets you 81 games, isn’t intentionally cheating worth at least a month off?
stros1fan
PED suspensions did not happen until they were collectively bargained with the MLBPA. If you want suspensions for using cameras to illegally steal signs then take it up with the MLBPA. There were many PED users, including Canseco, McGwire and Bonds that were never suspended.
Tony B
Nice for Chris Young. A good guy who had big moments, particularly for Royals WS winners in ‘15. Now putting his Ivy League education to good use.
rivera42
Astros didn’t lose any international money because … ?
Manfred is spineless.
sambino
The Trashstros should have their mascot dress up as a trashcan.

Either you’re like 70 or 8 to think these are funny anymore and keep doing them
Rangers29
That’s one thing I really like about my Rangers is the fact that they use the intl. market to their advantage. Here in 2 or so years players like Oslevis Basabe and Luisangle Acuna (Ronald’s brother) are going to be top prospects in baseball, because we chose our international players wisely.
(All I hope is that Profar 2.0 doesn’t come up and ruin all my hopes and dreams of another top prospect “bust”).
Fire Jon Daniels
I’m still SO mad about how light that Astros punishment was
bjupton100
Punishment too light. If you’re a team and you need one player to get over the hump you sign the player, lose a draft pick, and are usually stuck with a Votto to Myers/Price type contract that’s unmovable. You still do all that and consider it worth it to win a World Series. Astros should be severely limited at best in IBM/signings. I think they should extend it to three years especially if not going after any players. Honestly I’d suspend everyone who was on the team ten or fifteen games and make them forfeit them.
Rudy Zolteck
Yeah that’s the only way your team would be able to stop them, keep them from showing up?
ifyouaintcheatingyouainttrying
I just can’t wait to hear all the people saying the Astros are still cheating on our way to another playoff appearance and beating the Yankees again in the playoffs.
Jock2854
Yes Stros won but there will always be an asterisk by those wins!!!
Jock2854
Stros are done, they prob won’t make the playoffs with Dusty, bridesmaids never the bride
