While recovering from November wrist surgery, Tyler Glasnow is tinkering with his arsenal. The big right-hander plans on ditching his changeup and replacing it with a splitter, tweets MLB.com’s Juan Toribio . Glasnow’s changeup has never been a primary feature of his arsenal, topping at a 10.3% usage rate in 2017. It also hasn’t been a particularly effective pitch, save for in 2019 when hitters managed to slug just .125 against it, albeit in very limited usage (3.5%). It’s certainly intriguing to dream on a splitter to compliment Glasnow’s two lockdown offerings, but the pitch will have to survive spring training before taking on much (if any) significance. On a night of high drama, let’s check in on a couple other pitchers…
- Michael Wacha recognizes the starting depth he will be contending against in Mets camp this spring, but he’s undaunted, per Newsday’s Tim Healey. After all, as Healey points out, Wacha twice fought his way back into the Cardinals rotation last season after time in the bullpen. Of course, that might also be a sign that he’s the likeliest of the Mets’ six rotation candidates to start the year out of the money (both literally and figuratively, given the incentives in Wacha’s contract for games started). Wacha finished last season with a 4.76 ERA/5.61 FIP across 126 2/3 innings, and he’s only twice crossed the 150 inning threshold. It’ll be an uphill climb for Wacha to make the rotation by opening day, but it’s not impossible. Given the injury rate, there’s a decent chance he finds his way into the rotation at some point in 2020 regardless.
- Jack Flaherty isn’t eligible for arbitration until after the 2020 season, which means he can’t test free agency until following 2023, but the Cardinals ought to do their due diligence in locking him up now, writes Ben Frederickson of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Easier said than done of course, especially with a player who has already shown signs of understanding his tremendous value. Frederickson recounts Flaherty’s rejection of the Cardinals salary offer before last season, which cost him $10,000, though the penalty was worth it from Flaherty’s perspective. The statement he was able to make about the current system was of bigger importance to the Cardinals’ ace. That’s a good sign in terms of Flaherty’s character and competitive spirit, but perhaps less so for Cardinals fans hoping for news of an early extension. Flaherty’s displeasure with the arbitration system has little to do with the Cardinals, of course, but after a dominant 2019 in which he posted a 2.75 ERA/3.46 FIP, including a mind-boggling 0.91 ERA in the second half, it’s understandable for Flaherty to be at least a little displeased at making close to the league minimum.

Flaherty deserves a contract

Pretty sure he has one buddy

Buddy Guy reference. Great blues guitarist. I had dinner with him once.

Arbitration and pre-arb sucks for all non-free agents. But, as with other pro sports players unions, though not always to the same extent, the union always represents veterans first.
If Tony Clark cared, he’d insist arbitration be removed from the next CBA. Go to a system kind of like the NBA with service-time tiers for free agency after shorter-term rookie contracts.
Javia
I can’t wait to see the splitter from Glasnow! With his gigantic hands it should be able to slip right between his fingers with no spin. It should drop like a rock!
baines03
Splitters are supposed to have spin… the batter thinks it’s a fastball. Fork balls have no spin.
oooofishrighton
God that comment made me hot!
jkinser20
Pay flaherty. He’s the face and the ace of this rotation for the considerable future and while I want him to be paid fairy, locking him up now will be cheaper than in 2 or 3 years considering he continues being an ace level pitcher. No brainer move.
Prospectnvstr
They already paid Jack Flaherty $2,000,000.00 in 2014. I’m pretty sure, not positive, that his bank account is in good standing.
teufelshunde4
Ah yeah there is a thing called taxes. Back in 2014 the highest Federal rate was 39% California state rate is what 13% so rough estimate is 52% of 2 million went for taxes. So what 940k or 950k, is what Jack cleared. Median cost of a home in LA metro area is 669k. So tell me again how wealthy Jack is after his 2 million signing bonus?
Nuggethoarder
Incredibly wealthy. Financially independent with the ability to own your own home outright before you are 25 years old puts you beyond…almost all of your peers. You also forget that he made 550K per year the last two years.
That doesn’t mean he shouldn’t negotiate to earn as much as he can given his skillset and occupation. But he is incredibly wealthy, particularly considering his age.

Teufels…
Just so you know the average effective tax rate (after deductions and write-offs) for someone in the 39% tax bracket is 19%. That on average is what they actually pay. Less than the rate of folks in the 28% tax bracket. Because the 39%ers get all the tax breaks. And CA state income tax rates range from 1 to 12.3%. So I wouldn’t go assuming a 52% tax rate… I guarantee it’s not that and probably not even close. I would guess 30-38% total, state and federal, if he works at minimizing it..
mustang66
You only pay your home state tax in the games played in that state. The balance is based on the tax rate from the state you play the rest of your games
Bob Lablah
Incorrect sir. There’s spin but it’s very minimal if thrown correctly. It’s one of the nastiest pitches ever but super difficult to execute.
PhilliePhan
I’d be extremely worried about Glasnow’s elbow if he starts throwing a splitter.
Javia
Splitters are not bad for a pitchers elbow. Especially if your fingers are 8″ long.
Baines03- the less a splitter spins, the more it drops. I remember seeing Clemens throwing a splitter. It was replayed in slow motion. 90mph and barely 1 complete spin from his hand to the catchers glove.
Mikel Grady
Cardinal way is keep him cheap for next 4 years As a ace then when he commands 300+ million let him walk
JFactor
When has that ever happened with the Cardinals?
Pujols was given over $100M and was a Cardinal for 11 years before getting his big contract. Nobody else fits. Cards keep their favorite players
teufelshunde4
Pujols 100 million dollar deal was thought to be an overpay at the time.
In hindsight its fair to ask how old Pujols really is? He has been really inconsistent in some interviews when discussing age in last 3 or 4 years.
live42day
When exactly has that happened?
spudchukar
Evidence! You have none.

remember that one offseason when Padres reigned Heath Bell or am I tripping?
JackStrawb
Wacha’s incentives are far more pricey if he starts than relieves, making him the clear #6 on the Mets depth chart as of today.
One of Matz and Porcello is going to have to have a dismal spring for Wacha to make the rotation as of Opening Day.
brandonl
You need 6 starters in today’s game. Injuries and rest, you need to have a guy on the roster that can start a hand full of games. Mets didn’t have a lot of money to spend this off season but they were smart and built up the pitching staff and bullpen.
DarkSide830
yeah but no one employs a 6 man rotation
met man
Maybe that will start now
Keithyim
Then degrom gets fewer starts, which isn’t ideal
tiredolddude
Well said and with that in mind, I always wonder how anyone considers the Padres or D-Backs contenders. Four more starters each and they’d be set
Javia
Padres have more than 10 starters, thanks.
AssumeFactsNotInEvidence
Robbie Ray, Zac Gallen, Bumgarner, and Luke Weaver is a pretty strong 4 starter core. Maybe you need to brush up on their roster!
Maurice Lock
Don’t sign a damn thing, Jack. After this season, if you pitch well, you will make millions in ARB. Make the Cardinals pay dearly. Don’t sign a lowball 5/30 deal like they will throw at you. Don’t do it.
south.city.hustle
Both Jack and the Cardinals are playing this right. Jacks sustained production will determine his long term value but the Cardinals cant just throw elite level money at him just yet. Both would be smart to at least try and work out an arbitration years contract though. Then go from there….
No need to work on that value though until the end of 2020 season….
live42day
South.city – that comment is on point. The Cards will talk to him during arbitration at the end of the 2020 season. At that point, I hope they lock him up for a longer contract.
teufelshunde4
Cards gave Martinez 5/50 and Jack has shown to be more then that in a short period of time.
Jack will get paid, as long as he stays healthy
