The Phillies and Dodgers have agreed to a trade that will send outfielder Kyle Garlick to the Phillies, according to Todd Zolecki of MLB.com. In return, the Dodgers will receive minor league left-hander Tyler Gilbert. To clear a spot for Garlick on the 40-man roster, outfielder Nick Martini was designated for assignment.
Garlick had been designated earlier this week. He got a brief taste of the Majors with the Dodgers in 2019, appearing in 30 games and slashing .250/.321/.521 with three home runs. It was a nice showing from the 28-year-old rookie, who will have to show that he can hang around in the big leagues after an impressive showing at Triple-A.
With two minor league options remaining, Garlick could be a nice reserve option for the Phillies in the corner outfield. He’ll compete with the likes of Nick Williams, Roman Quinn, and Jay Bruce for bench at-bats. For what it’s worth, Garlick is the only true righty of that group (Quinn is a switch-hitter).
Gilbert is a 26-year-old reliever who was the Phillies’ 6th-round pick in 2015. He spent all of last season at Triple-A, pitching 47 2/3 innings of 2.83-ERA baseball, striking out 46 batters. With the Dodgers’ crowded bullpen unit, he’s a long shot to genuinely contend for a roster spot, but he at least represents good depth, especially in case of injuries.
C’mon Royals , puck martini so I can get a cool jersey
I believe this was a good trade for the Phillies. Garlick has potential to become a good hitter. Great job Phillies.
Garlick did really well last year, good trade for both teams
He definitely will add flavor to the clubhouse
Lol I hope he brings trout with him…quite the duo. Maybe Salmon could come manage?
Chet Lemon would make for a better recipe 😀
LOL
Well, clearly garlic and a martini don’t go together and couldn’t be on the same roster
Sounds fishy. Maybe some salt and pepper too
Any team in a rebuild would benefit from signing a player like Martini.
Not really
Garlick Jr was no match for Goku
Underrated comment
Give up a Martini for Garlick????? Not in my universe…..
Sorry,, somebody had to……
Solid D+.
I’ll give you a D too.
I was trying to think of one myself. Kudos
Maybe Garlick will win a Gold Clove someday.
Hey!! I didn’t start this!
Rumor has it Martini had a penchant for shaking things up and it really stirred the room which lead to this
Hope they sent along Brandon peppermint to help cover the odor!
Rougned Odor, that is.
Garlick isnt worth Martini and Gilbert.
The return truly stinks
I think the Phis’ logic is they want a RH hitting outfielder in case they ultimately need to sit Haisley vs lefties. Maybe if Cutch comes back strong we can bump him over to CF once in a while against lhp
Was hoping they landed Hunter Pence to fill a similar role before he resigned with the Giants for some reason. I like Gilbert but they Phillies traded from an area of depth. They have Morgan, Alvarez, Suarez, Francisco Liriano, Damon Jones and even Jojo Romero ahead of him for lefty bp reps in the spring
Roman Quinn will hit lefties in CF for as long as he’s healthy. And if he hits as well as he did last August they may find a place for him to hit righties. Until he gets hurt.
Garlick is better than Martini and the other AAA options are question marks. He’s unlikely to make the team but he’s one phone call away if Roman Quinn … er… someone gets hurt.
Poor Martini and his high OBP getting passed around like a j this offseason.
High OBP at a time when power is the thing organizations look for.
1990 called. Teams are always looking for high obp guys at top of the order now an days.
Eh, not really. High OBP and defense gets you a job.
But then again you tried to argue a joke. Don’t do that. It’s a joke.
Also “high” and “like a j” was another layer I tried to add there that totally flew over your head.
Conclusion? I am smarter than you. Sorry.
You’re confusing the league having an abundance of power, with teams specifically looking for power. Because power is everywhere, it actually makes an OBP-driven profile quite desirable.
Are you guys related?
Smells like garlic in here
The jokes are bad but the food was good.
Why did they trade, what on paper looks like a solid reliever, for a guy that doesn’t play CF and is a 28 yr old finally getting to the majors?
Launch angle skill.
The Max Muncy effect.
Gilroy needs a triple A team named the cloves.
Yes!! This…
Change the unoriginal “San Jose Giants” to the “Gilroy Cloves” = beautiful
Adios Garlick….you will be minced!
That could well be the best yet preauto.
A Garlick Martini, shakened, not stirred.
Best comment!
Seems like he performed well when called upon, albeit only small sample size. Thing is, he’s already 28 years old so maybe he’s a late bloomer. Hope he gets a legit chance.
Appropriate, since garlic blooms late in its life cycle
Same agent as Donnie Veal?
Pasta present?
Zack Wheat, perhaps?
Carp? Trout? Salmon?
So what’s wrong with Gilbert? It looks like his minors numbers are pretty solid but at age 25 he hasn’t been promoted to the majors. What’s up with that?
In a thread that would naturally fill up with garlic and martini puns, “what’s wrong with Gilbert?” is a masterstroke. Respect.
Eating grapes?
I’d imagine this situation must be eating at Gilbert right now. He’s so far down on LA’s depth chart this might lead to sour grapes.
Bad luck really. He could’ve gotten a call up in 2018 but the Phillies traded for Aaron Loup and then Luis Avilan instead. Last year there were a couple of times where it looked like he might get the call but he came down with a couple of minor injuries and he wasn’t on the 40-man. So they picked other relievers instead.
Now the Phillies have about 300 relievers on their Spring Training roster so he was expendable.
The astros should get Garlick. Garlic repels vampires and cheaters.
Not sure if Garlick can ward off the vampire zombies of the Philadelphia Badlands. Good luck.
I’m being punished by these puns
So you say you’re being pun-ished?
Garlick will be quite popular with the Italian community in South Philly.
Garlick was a name I wish LAD did not DFA for Mookie, but hope he gets a real shot with the Phillies
Since La changed his swing, he’s been a real solid bat. Philly may have gotten themselves a nice bench piece and occasional starter for not much
I wish the best to Garlick in Philly. He has had tremendous upside since LA tweaked him. Put together some solid at bats for LA in the little bit of time he was with them.
Nice way to garnish a roster.
Least now they Phillies’ are safe from vampire attacks.
I’ll show myself out…
Much like Philly, I have DFA’d many a Martini in my professional life.
I feel like this has been a very punny off-season.
Last time I checked, the Phillies were still in Pennsylvania, not Transylvania.. There’s no vampires around, so no need for Garlick.
Maybe the confusion arose because they had one too many Martinis.
I would take Martini over Garlick. I believe Martini would settle in as an average ML’er.
Gilbert probably has more value than either.
Love Garlic
I wonder if his breath smells?
I believe we have named all members of the All-Fish Team in this post about Garlick now…except 2. I’ll name drop Kevin Bass and Robert Fish. Anyone got any others?
Preacher Roe, Chuck Finley, Gil Hodges, and Rod Carew could all be on that roster.
Nicely done
Catfish Hunter – full stop. Marlon Byrd, who was clearly confused on his species, Tim Crabtree, Rob Whalen, AJ Pollock. And too many Oscars to mention.
Darn and I also totally forgot about Vida Bluefish.
With Derek Fisher trying to catch their hits
Now I’m hungry
I can’t remember the name of the guy that played for the Marlins not too long ago who was a great hitter, but that Fish had a pretty good Stick!!!
Relief pitching did the Dodgers in last year. You never have enough relievers because they are a dime a dozen.
