Reds outfielder Nick Senzel could begin appearing in spring training games next week, per Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer. Senzel has been working back from the shoulder surgery he underwent last September, and though the Reds believe he’s versatile enough to handle all three outfield positions, they’re only going to play him in center until he’s fully healed, according to manager David Bell. “I know he could do it but allowing him to focus on one spot may be more important than any of our other outfielders just because they all have so much more experience out there than he does,” Bell said of Senzel, a former infield prospect who spent his rookie season in center. The 24-year-old’s one of several outfielders for the Reds, who also count Nick Castellanos, Jesse Winker, Shogo Akiyama and Aristides Aquino among their options in the grass.
More from the National League…
- Concerned about the possibility of “a structural emergency” in their current stadium, Chase Field, the Diamondbacks sent representatives to Vancouver to explore the Canadian city’s viablity as a temporary landing spot in 2018 and ’19, Sean Fitz-Gerald of The Athletic reports (subscription link). Diamondbacks officials toured B.C. Place Stadium in Vancouver, which was one of six potential destinations Major League Baseball recommended for the club. “While working at Major League Baseball, I provided the team with numerous possibilities, including Vancouver,” Joe Garagiola Jr., who’s now in the D-backs’ front office, told Fitz-Gerald. “Club executives visited there to determine the reality of making it a contingency plan.”Meanwhile, Diamondbacks CEO Derrick Hall told Doug & Wolf on 98.7 FM Arizona’s Sports Station (via Kevin Zimmerman) that the club did indeed send officials to Vancouver. “Any team that has a dome, in particular in a challenging weather atmosphere, should have at least a backup plan,” Hall said. “I mean, if that (Chase Field) roof won’t close in the middle of summer, we can’t play here. Probably, the union wouldn’t allow it, we wouldn’t allow it.” Even though Chase Field opened somewhat recently (1998), the Diamondbacks have made their unhappiness with the facility known over the past few years. Still, the team has “no intention” of leaving Arizona, Hall said.
- Most of the Giants’ rotation appears set with Johnny Cueto, Jeff Samardzija, Kevin Gausman and Drew Smyly in line to comprise 80 percent of it. The last spot’s in question, but it’s “likely” to come down to righties Tyler Beede and Logan Webb, Maria Guardado of MLB.com writes. For now, Beede looks to be in the lead, per John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. The 26-year-old threw two no-hit innings and reached 98 mph on the radar gun in his Cactus League debut Thursday. Beede averaged just over 94 mph on his fastball in 2019, when he struggled to a 5.08 ERA/5.03 FIP and posted 8.69 K/9 and 3.54 BB/9 in 117 innings. Webb, 23, made his MLB debut in 2019 and put up numbers similar to Beede’s over a smaller sample of 39 2/3 frames (93 mph velo, 5.22 ERA/4.12 FIP, 8.39 K/9, 3.18 BB/9).
- Infielder/outfielder Chris Owings has never played first base in his career, but he has been working there this spring in an effort to make the Rockies as a super-utility man, Jake Rill of MLB.com writes. Owings, whom the Rockies added on a minor league contract in free agency, had a couple useful seasons in the past with division-rival Arizona. But neither 2018 nor ’19 treated Owings well. Between the Royals and Red Sox last season, he battled an unsightly .139/.209/.233 (13 wRC+) in 196 plate appearances. But if he does earn a roster spot with Colorado, he could be a backup option behind starting first baseman Daniel Murphy.

The DBacks are moving to Vegas by the end of this decade
John Kappel
No. If they move, and it’s a big if it’ll be to a much bigger city than Vegas. Charlotte, Portland, San Juan, Nashville, Memphis, Montreal, or Mexico City would all be better choices. Vegas is 42nd largest TV market in the country. Not to mention that Vegas, along with some of the choices I named, have triple A teams that need to be moved and compensated. Probably the best bet to move to with the least change or restructuring would be Portland. Same time zone, bigger TV market, no affiliated minor league team ( the closest is 15 miles away and it’s low A for the Dbacks.), no need to shuffle up the divisions. Makes way more sense than Vegas.
amk3510
Imagine thinking any of those citys would be a better location for an MLB team than Vegas. We heard the same nonsense about the NHL and that worked out just fine. If Toronto struggles to land free agents you ain’t seen nothing yet if Mexico City or San Juan ever get a team. They would have to overpay for free agents so bad.
MetsFan22
Why would they have to overpay?? Mexico City is safer than most of Detroit and Chicago etc anyways. Do you think players like playing for the royals Utah Jazz or Browns based on location? No but they have to it’s a job. Mexico City is also not the far away and people speak English there….
earmbrister
Mexico City is safer than Detroit or Chicago?
Sure
inkstainedscribe
Mexico City is also a couple thousand feet more above sea level than Denver (and has year round air quality problems). You’d have a hard time developing any pitching there.
John Kappel
FYI, Chicago is not even one of the 20 most dangerous cities in the United States. Everyone thinking it’s dangerous is just flat wrong.
John Kappel
Toronto struggles to land free agents for a whole host of reasons including higher taxes, bad playing surfaces, poor weather. A new stadium in Portland or Nashville or Charlotte wouldn’t have those issues.
John Kappel
That would be the biggest issue for Mexico City.
amk3510
Professional athletes don’t live in 8 mile or hood Chicago LOL. The suburbs in those citys are some of the nicest in the country. Utah is really nice and you clearly have never been there. Kansas City and Cleveland is not ideal but nearly all athletes would rather play there than Mexico. Mexico is nice for a little cash grab game each year but the idea of a full time team there is laughable.
MetsFan22
That’s is true. Good point…
MetsFan22
Yes some parts of Chicago and Detroit are more dangerous than anywhere in Mexico City…
MetsFan22
The most dangerous part in Chicago is more dangerous than the most dangerous part of Mexico
MetsFan22
You’re delusional, Mexico like the USA.. has dangerous parts and safe parts.. Mexico City is not dangerous at all… the players also would be living in nice areas in mexico where they would face no danger.. I’m not saying we should put a team in Mexico but that for other issues.. safety is definitely not one
fred-3
Portland isn’t that much larger than Vegas. Vegas is basically the perfect city to have a baseball team – weather, fast growing city and surrounding areas like Henderson, young population, attractive FA destination due to low taxation, and perfectly seated in between the Rockies and California
paddyo furnichuh
Oh yeah, that Vegas summer weather is just great! Said no one ever…
fred-3
They will play in a AC dome, obviously
John Kappel
The TV market is.
fred-3
And 2 less popular sports – the WNBA and NHL – were seen as successes during their 1st few seasons in Vegas
fox471 Dave
Las vegas = 648,000
Portland = 639,000
Not sure what you are trying to say John Kappel?
John Kappel
The surrounding area is a much bigger TV market. You must not have read everything I wrote. It’s okay. Reading is a skill.
MoRivera 1999
Actual numbers for LV and Portland are 642K and 647K if you google them for greater metropolitan area. Not sure where you got 639K or numbers that show Vegas ahead… Vegas temperatures are like 115, 120 in the summer and rising. The AC requirement would be as ridiculous as Phoenix. Just a bad choice for a summer sport.
prestigeworldwide
phx metro is around 5 million. Dbacks aren’t going anywhere…just owners jockeying for more local tax money.
layventsky
Portland had a PCL team in the past, but their venue was renovated for a soccer-only configuration if I remember correctly.
lowtalker1
Portland could not even hang onto a triple a team. They got rid of it in favor of soccer.
They will never have a team… bunch of hipsters
John Kappel
There is an ownership group already there ready to bring in an expansion team…..
whynot 2
Hipsters like baseball too… they may prefer artisanal beer and kombucha but they still like the sport and have the disposable income to support a team
RoyalsFanAmongWolves
Mexico City? Isn’t there a warning that you should never drink the water in Mexico? They would never get any fans from the United States because of that. Why do people think the Diamondbacks would leave Arizona?
whynot 2
I bet you have never left the US? Mexico City is a popular destination for a lot of reasons, but let’s assume tap water is not drinkable, have you heard of bottle water? I really hope this was just a silly attempt at trolling and not your actual believes
MetsFan22
Living in Mexico City is 10x better than living the middle of nowhere like you lol!!
MetsFan22
All this people are just following a narrative about Mexico that is not true.. Mexico like many other countries has bad cities but it also has safe cities. (Where the players would be living) This dude is probably racist
rightyspecialist
The Giants.Lol
Rsox
I don’t see MLB ever having teams in Purrto Rico or Mexico. Didn’t they cancel a series in Puerto Rico a couple of years ago because players were concerned for their health?. Mexico offers greater concern for player safety, a couple of games during a season is one thing but 81 home games plus possible post season is another.
Either of the Cities in Tennessee, Portland, and Charlotte are interesting. I’ve always thought baseball would do well in Tennessee. The Braves have some ownage of the Carolina market. Portland has often been mentioned as an up and coming sports city but I wonder if they could support a MLB team on a nightly basis.
MetsFan22
lol your talking nonsense rn. Players wouldn’t be in danger in Puerto Rico or Mexico City any more than some of the teams location rn. Chicago Detroit etc are more dangerous than Mexico City… I get there are some more dangerous parts in Mexico but they wouldn’t be playing there and there is dangerous parts in the USA too…
John Kappel
No they really aren’t in danger in Chicago.
MetsFan22
Chicago has areas that are more dangerous than Mexico City…. it’s not even close…
agrorolm
I live in Puerto Rico. In case you didn’t know Puerto Rico taxes are higher than any state in U.S.A. No way MLB or any owner will even care to move a team here.
Eat'EmUpTigers
That Giants rotation is absolutely horrifying
PandaExpress
Couldn’t be worse than last year. And we got some tricks up our sleeve, openers should help. Pretty sure Smyly, Gausman, Beede won’t be asked to pitch more than 5 innings at a time. Not that it matters much, but they have yet to give up an earned run in ST. Look good so far.
larry48
LMAO
rightyspecialist
….This might be the worst rotation in the National League.
John Kappel
The city of Pittsburgh is on line 1.
PandaExpress
I think Tyler Rogers is going to be our “secret” weapon. Guys can’t square him up. He can be used as an opener, setup guy, high leverage. He’s going to add alot.

No, Chris Owings is hoping to make it as a utility player. There is nothing super about him. Super utility is just a ridiculous term anyway.
dynamite drop in monty
Yet another code word in the lexicon of baseball for “white”
Brixton
What lol? Super utility literally means someone who plays the INF and OF off the bench. Nothing to do with race at all lol. Emilio Bonifacio and Michael Martinez were always referred to as super utility men.
DarkSide830
Andrew Suarez also had a good debut for SF. woudlnt count him out either.
PandaExpress
Be nice to see Suarez have a comeback year. He really struggled last year.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Being from the east coast, I don’t get to see too many D-Back games on TV. However, when I have, what I do remember is a fairly active and enthused fan base.
So why would the team want to move? Isn’t Phoenix, and Arizona in general, one of the fastest growing areas in the USA? Lots of boomers move there from cold weather climates. Like Florida in the east, don’t see that migration to a warmer climate slowing down any time soon.
So, what am I missing?
hiflew
It is a fast growing area, but it is growing with retired folks. The D-Backs have the same problem as the two Florida teams. The retired folks moving there that are baseball fans have probably already been fans of the Dodgers, Giants, or some other teams for years. Florida probably has more Yankees fans than Marlins and Rays fans combined. Young fans could be developed over time, but that requires patience and time. Plus, baseball has not exactly been great at getting young fans across the board.
Moving to Vegas will have the exact same problem, but with a different demographic. Arizona is a retirement community, while Vegas is a tourist community. People will start out enjoying the novelty of the new team, but won’t have any long-term connection.
But the biggest factor is the owners of the D-Backs basically threatening to move in order to get a new ballpark. I would just love for a city to one day say, go ahead and leave. We’ll just find something else to do. I think Phoenix could easily be that city.
larry48
D-Backs park is a dump city owns the part and have not done basic maintenance ever. The baseball park is only 22 years old but needs 50-100 million in repairs and the city won’t pay for whatever the reason. They just want their share of the money with no reinvestments. Diamondback won’t be in Chase field by end of the decade unless they buy the stadium and then spend 50 million a year for the next decade.
Gonzo's blooper
The Dbacks took over and are now in control, no more Maricopa County Stadium authority. It’s not really a dump but has never been beautiful because of the, walls, roof and AC- 105F average summer highs! Coors Field with a roof is a good comparison, and it was patterned after Denver’s then-new stadium, 50K seating and all.. The team says they are going to refurbish or build a new local stadium. I don’t get why the improvements are so costly and maybe Dbacks exaggerated to get out of county contract.
trout27
Vegas would have a hard time developinga fan base considering a vast majority of the city and the suburbs are populated by people from all over the country. There is a good chance that there would be more fans in the stadium from the visiting team there than locals.
Backup Catcher to the Backup Catcher
Senzel may get off to a slow start because of health concerns and PT availability. However, I think by Memorial Day Cinncy’s modern day “Nick the Stick” will be playing every day somewhere on the diamond.
Staying on the field has been a problem, but a healthy Senzel is one heck of a baseball player. The bat is pure gold.
Endersgame
Could you imagine how heavy a pure gold bat would be? But you are right, I think just about every team would be better with Senzel in the lineup.
DockEllisDee
I’d estimate.. 30-40 lbs?
titanic struggle
If they don’t deal him by MD…and I hope they don’t!
Macburns
If Smyly and Gausman are your 3/4 in the rotation, you know it’s gonna be a long year.
crazylarry
Simply stupid to even suggest the D- Backs are moving anywhere. 5th largest population in the U.S. MLB has far worse cities. This is the owners jockeying for better conditions. How someone would suggest it is a dump is silly. Moving to Portland or Vancouver or MEXICO City or any of those cities shows how people just don’t get it. Upgrades needed yes, dump no.
fred-3
Who cares about population size if fans can’t support a team? Even their World Series home games in ‘01 were overrun by Yankee fans. That was before the stubhub and seatgeek era btw.
Gonzo's blooper
Definitely not true, few Yankees fans could be heard and I was there. It was a crazy place and Jeter himself said so. After Soriano hit the Game 7, 8th inning home run off Schilling to put NY up 2-1, it was a morgue. Now Dodgers and Cubs fans for regular season games – that’s another story.
DockEllisDee
I really hope the Reds don’t let Phil Ervin die on the vine, he’s a legit Adam Eaton type stat line player over a full season
SupremeZeus
Maricopa county study estimated that Chase Field will need $187M in maintenance & repairs over the final 2 decades of the agreement. That is a lot of scratch for that aircraft hangar. I believe that the Dbacks new stadium will ultimately be built in the East Valley—East of the 101 on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Reservetion.
Ghost Pepper
What a disadvantage it must have been for Arizona in 01 ; playing to a rival crowd for 7 games in a row.
Gonzo's blooper
You couldn’t be more wrong about the Dbacks home field “disadvantage.” I was at Games 1 and 2 of ’01 Series. Bank One Ballpark was crazy loud, white towels waving for the Dbacks, few if any Yankees fans could be heard. Sadly I wasn’t at Game 7, but the place went even crazier for Gonzo’s walk-off blooper off Rivera to win the #1 most thrilling World Series. Same thing in the crazy ’17 Wild Card game Vs Rockies. Chase Field was as loud as any. True, we Dbacks fans dislike the thousands of Dodgers fans pouring into Chase Field, but it has a big home field edge in postseason games.
