Let’s take a look at the latest notes from the National League:
- Dodgers great Clayton Kershaw was something of a surprise offseason Driveline Baseball student, Pedro Moura of The Athletic reports (subscription link). It’s by now common to hear of hurlers spending time at the renowned clinic, but the most accomplished pitcher of his generation? Kershaw says he was mostly intrigued by learning “how to create the most efficiency with your body, and how to create the most power with your body.” President of baseball ops Andrew Friedman calls it a testament to the superstar lefty’s curiosity. No doubt a devastating postseason exit played a role. It’ll be interesting to see how the effort translates as Kershaw attempts to continue to evolve as he ages. (Long-time division rival Mason Saunders prefers a somewhat different offseason regimen.)
- The Cardinals seem hopeful that righty Carlos Martinez can return to being a quality rotation piece in 2020. Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch writes that the club still feels Martinez has exceptional talent. But it’s equally clear there’s still uncertainty. Manager Mike Shildt says Martinez is “out here giving himself a legitimate shot to compete” for a starting job, but notes that “what he does during the work and how he recovers between games that are going [to matter] as we start to ramp it up.” In other words, as Goold puts it, the organization believes Martinez must “embrace a more consistent between-start and pregame approach.” Whether Martinez can find his groove could make quite the difference in the Cards’ 2020 outlook, particularly with Miles Mikolas set to miss time.
- We heard chatter about Freddie Freeman’s late-2019 elbow issues, but it seems the injury was a fair bit more debilitating than the Braves slugger let on. As Jeff Schultz of The Athletic reports (subscription link), Freeman dealt not only with pain, but with quite a lot of difficulties relating to his efforts to deal with the agonizing bone spurs in his joint. Schultz writes that the star first baseman relied heavily upon pain pills just to be able to play. But that came with other problems: “He had gotten into bad habits, cutting his swing short, because of the injury. The lack of sleep and accompanying stress made things worse.” The story speaks to Freeman’s determination, but it’s also a bit worrisome to read of his travails. Thankfully, it seems offseason surgery has eliminated the need for such drastic measures in 2020.
- The Reds roster remains fun to watch even as Spring Training gets underway. The team placed some bat-first bets around the lineup but also installed Freddie Galvis at shortstop. He’s currently without a reserve complement, but the Reds are now looking to find one in a somewhat surprising place. As MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon writes, Kyle Farmer will be given a shot at adding reserve shortstop to his already lengthy list of responsibilities. The 29-year-old has plenty of amateur experience at the position and has spent a bit of time there as a pro, but he has primarily been tasked with playing behind the dish and at third base since being drafted. It seems the Reds are comfortable playing Farmer just about anywhere on the infield; he could be an interesting asset if he’s able to improve upon last year’s tepid offensive showing.

I love Freddie, but his decision to try to play through the pain was foolish, both for his long-term health and the Atlanta’s ability to compete. No one will ever know what could have happened had Freddie gone to the IL, but still… seems foolish.
Matt
I 110% agree with you. We all could tell something was wrong…..but its over now.
uncle mike
Surprise surprise!!! The 2020 Cardinals savior, Matt Carpenter was scratched prior to today’s game because of back spasms. This is just a preview of games to come. While Edman or someone else better than Carp sets on the bench
bravesfan88
Yes, this will be a very long message, but it is a big deal, that is not talked about enough. It is a huge deal especially in Atlanta, where Freeman is setting a bad example for his young teammates..
As a leader, and as someone his younger peers look up to, watching Freddie grind, fight, and play through injuries year in and year out, his teammates feel the need to do exactly the same thing..
This ends up hurting the team, because not everyone is Freddie Freeman, where sometimes even at 60% it is still better than his back-up. Not only that, but Freeman also has an amazing understanding of his own swing, his mechanics, and he understands how to constantly make adjustments accordingly. That is a rare trait that only a handful or so players have..
Over the past few seasons, we have seen Freddie play through alot of “minor” injuries countless times. We have also seen Dansby, Ender, Riley, Johan, Acuña Jr., etc. all do the exact same thing, especially Dansby.
Dansby has done his best to stay on the field despite battling wrist issues, among other injuries. When healthy, Dansby has steadily improved both offensively and defensively, yet his growth hasn’t been as obvious, LARGELY due to playing hurt.
The worst part about these younger players trying to play hurt for extended lengths of time is that it can and will create bad habits, relatively similar to what the article alludes to for Freeman. Anytime you’re favoring a part of your body, have less strength than you’re used to, etc. the smallest adjustments can completely throw off your mechanics at the plate.
We have all seen and witnessed how the smallest adjustments can lead to huge improvements at the plate for guys like Ronald Acuña Jr., Christian Yelich, Josh Donaldson, Jose Bautista, etc..Well, understand, any small adjustments, they will impact your bat path, follow through, etc., especially injuries to your hands and/or wrists, and it WILL negatively impact the at bats you have..Even after you’re “cleared to play” wrist injuries still negatively impact a player’s performance..That’s the primary reason why Judge wasn’t the same for parts of last season..
You might get a pain injection or even take pain killers, and your injury could be the farthest thing from your mind, but your brain and your body will still react and adjust to that injury accordingly..Or even after the injury has “healed” it will still take longer to fully regain your strength back, especially in your hand, elbow and your wrists..
Anyways, it is good to want to play, fight for your team, and want to help your team win, but there comes a point when the smartest thing to do is know when you’re only hurting yourself and the team. UNFORTUNATELY, with Freddie being the leader, and Snitker being such a player’s coach, I dont think this culture is going to change in Atlanta anytime soon…
samthebravesfan
While the premise is true, what we and the players also saw is he played like hot garbage for a couple months and got a lot of flak for it. Don’t dismiss that as a factor either.

Appalachian_Outlaw
Agreed. Guys shouldn’t sit for every little thing, but there is a difference between playing sore, and playing hurt. If a guy is hurt, the way Freddie was, he needs to take care of his health, first and foremost. Secondly, you have to weigh when you actually start hurting the team by being out there.

gettig your backup catcher to play short is insane. if he can play there senzel would easily be able to. farmer is not nearly quick enough
sportsfreak52
Sure and reliable hands at short beat speed any day, obviously you’ve never played the position.
Decius
Obviously, you don’t know how to talk to people.

Honestly, this place has become a cesspool and full of negativity since I first joined. It honestly used to be a fun place of good discussions in the comments sections back in the day. A troll or negative, pointless comment here or there, but the comments section is trash now.

Agreed

I mean thank you I was really just trying to make a point it had nothing to do with that cranky guy

This.

give me a break.not like he has a good bat. there are guys still on the market who could give us an equal bat and glove amd speed than can hang. it’s not a video game.ss is quick for a reason. I am sure your gaming experience makes you more of an expert that 150 years ball.

@jtvincent Senzel was literally the first thing that popped into my head, as soon as I saw the words ”Kyle Farmer” and “shortstop” so close together..I love his versatility and willingness to play anywhere, at any time..but they HAVE to realize that they’ve got better options…
JoshG
Farmer was a college SS ya know ..
jtvincent
what like 8 years ago and 1000 less innings on his knees. we seen the guy playing the infield he’s not very good
Jon Vera
Anyone who follows the reds know they have repeated a 1,000x SENZEL IS NOT PLAYING SS. Stop bringing up such nonsense.
jtvincent
that’s not what I said. my argument was having slow ass farmer play
JoshG
No .. they have not said it a thousand times… all that had been said is they don’t see it as possible right now coming back from shoulder issues
earmbrister
The Reds don’t need to spell it out or say it a thousand times. They tried the Senzel at short experiment. He trained for it, took the reps on the practice field, and he lasted all of ONE game in ST a year or two ago. The Reds had a need at SS but clearly did not like what they saw of Senzel at SS.
That ship has sailed people. Wake up and smell the coffee.

Daynlokki
I mean he has played 3b and 2b already. I get that short is more challenging but it’s within the realm of possibility. Especially considering catchers usually have an arm.

And your point is?

Pretty much.

Your post? Yeah, it is.

Well that explains why Freeman played like garbage for a while.

‘Most accomplished pitcher of his generation?’ Dude doesn’t even need a WS ring just not be hot dogshit in the postseason. Take it back.

And not using more than one double negative in a sentence couldn’t be a worse and more confusing way to write.

Who’s better?
Then check, What percentage is kershaws era better than them? 20%? 15?
It’s not close. He’s in the top 5 all time conversation
No verlander nor Scherzer are no where close to kershaws personal accomplishments so don’t even start
Dorothy_Mantooth
Kershaw is the best regular season pitcher we’ve seen in decades. But if I’m being honest, I’d rather have Scherzer on the mound for me in the post season. Kershaw needs a 2018 David Price post season breakthrough in order to be considered one of the best all time.
JustCheckingIn
Oh you mean his 2018 post season before the Astros? Lmfao isn’t narrative great, even when the other team cheats
willymayshayse
Hey ghostrobot….51 curve/sliders thrown to the Astros. One of the most dominant breaking ball pitchers in a generation generated zero swing and misses. ZERO!
I think your assessment is rather ridiculous given the mountain of evidence that exists to show that he was cheated out of a ring. Try thinking beyond face value. No rings? Garbage assessment.

Kershaw going to driveline is the perfect example of wanting to stay at the top as long as possible, and working for it
Last year was his first full year with an era over 3 ever, and it wasn’t even 3.10. He could very well post a sub 3 era if driveline can help him, once again
differentbears
Hopefully he can find some of his lost velocity. He really needs a bit more of an MPH gap between his slider and fastball. When he threw seemingly every fastball at 94, 87 on the slider worked, especially with the late break and depth. But now his fastball is barely faster than his slider, which itself has become closer to 88 or 89. It’s sometimes hard to tell which pitch he’s even throwing, as they’re nearly the same velocity and the slider just doesn’t break that much as the MPHs go up.
Having seen Kershaw adapt before, I have hope that he can either find a few ticks or adapt. When he briefly struggled with batters jumping on his first pitch fastball, he fixed that. And being a strikeout pitcher, he learned to pitch to early contact, saving his energy for later innings and to pitch even deeper into games with lower pitch counts.
jtvincent
he is not listed as one of their clients is there something I’m missing
vtadave
They didn’t say he was a client. Just checked things out.

Dodgers as a team hired One of the driveline Guys as pitching coordinator. Prob thru that connection
cincinnatikid
Thought maybe Cincinnati would bring Zack Cozart back since the Giants would be paying all but the league minimum of his salary.

Not one person claiming Farmer can’t play short and that Senzel can, has watched one third of one inning of Reds baseball in the last 2 yrs.
Farmer is NOT a backup catcher that plays infield. He is a backup infielder that can also catch. Big difference. Senzel played Short for one Spring training game last year and that project was IMMEDIATELY scrapped.
Senzel is now a major league outfielder…..PERIOD. The addition of moose sealed that weeks ago. Senzel CANNOT play short at the MLB level. 2nd? Yes, 3rd? Meh…..SS? Hard NO!
Farmer is a backup infielder who can catch or be a 5th/6th outfielder. He can even soft toss some blowout B.P. mop up detail in your standard 22-2 shellacking. Shortstop is not a foreign concept to him. It’s kind of what he does. The fact that he can catch confounds the minds of the simple who still consider catchers gear the tools of the ignorant.
jtvincent
he’s a backup power hitter if you could even call him and hitter. he’s not quick. glove is average at best. I mean give me a break if this guy can play short then senzel can play short. not saying that’s what’s going to happen but it’s much more sane than this nonsense. I mean this just shows how weak are bench is. and yes I watch the games and the guy can play shortstop at all he can barely play the infield.
earmbrister
Senzel CANNOT PLAY SS!

ksoze
He can, he’s just not very good at it

That’s funny, Larkin watched him working out at SS and said he could play the position.

270 obp 230 avg. pretty sure we can find a shortstop with really good hands that can hit like that.

STLkakaw!
Carlos will never reach his potential until he stays out of the night life and strip clubs of East St. Louis and focuses on his pitching. He has amazing stuff but would rather party. Probably the same reason Ozuna regrets not taking the qualifying offer. Lots of party animals on this team.
