Let’s keep up to date with the latest minor moves from around baseball…
- The Indians announced that they’ve inked left-hander Ty Boyles to a minor league contract. The 23-year-old southpaw, a 2013 draftee of the Reds, has spent his entire 7-year professional career in the Cincinnati organization, reaching as high as the Double-A level last year. After beginning his career as a starter, Boyles transitioned to a full-time relief role last year, getting into 47 games and working 66 total innings. He struck out 64 batters against 34 walks, notching a 4.36 ERA in his first full season in the bullpen. He was a 2018 participant in the Arizona Fall League. He’ll report to minor league camp with his new organization.

So they plan on stashing him in Akron then? It’s a bit confusing, as they already have a bunch of lefty options at AA or higher as relievers (Krauth, Gose, Speer, Nelson and Young. Plus possibly a converted starter like Hentges, Allen, or Tully). Unless they have a few injuries I’m not seeing a need/fit.

I think you’re overthinking it. Guys like this are basically just organizational depth; you worry less about where they fit because you’ll always need more arms to shuttle back and forth over the course of a year. Depth is depth. Besides, most of the guys you mention will probably be in Columbus anyway, so even if the intent is to stash him in Akron, there’s still a need.
But overall, if you think you have enough pitching, you still need more.

Agreed… he was signed more for depth and the potential that he makes some adjustments (limiting walks would be a good start) and turns a corner to become a legit bullpen prospect. He’s still young enough that if he can improve a bit around the edges his K/9 numbers as a reliever could translate well as a LH reliever. So whether they already have guys in AA or AAA who profile similarly – he was picked up because you can always use more pitching depth and on the off-chance they end up finding a diamond in the rough. Solid signing for them I think… really no risk and solid enough potential for someone as young as he is.

Why is there a general minor league signings post followed by 2 individual minor league signing posts? Legit question.

its how big of news the signings are. the others have MLB experience. few have heard of Ty Boyles
