TODAY: The Marlins have officially announced the signing. Rodriguez’s minor league deal indeed contains an invitation to Miami’s big league Spring Training camp.
FEBRUARY 4: The Marlins have struck a minor-league deal with veteran utilityman Sean Rodriguez, per Jeff Passan of ESPN.com (via Twitter). Other terms aren’t yet known.
Presumably, the 34-year-old will receive an invitation to participate in MLB camp. Rodriguez has seen action in each of the past dozen years in the big leagues, though he has failed to produce league-average offensive numbers over the past three seasons.
Rodriguez slashed a robust .270/.349/.510 in 342 plate appearances with the Pirates in 2016. That was an remains his best campaign at the plate. He inked a two-year contract with the Braves in the ensuing offseason, but was never really able to get going in Atlanta. Rodriguez and his family were victims in a major automobile accident before camp opened in 2017.
Given the severity of the injury and the depth of his ensuing struggles on the field, Rodriguez’s 2019 season was actually something of a rebound. He took 139 plate appearances last year with the Phillies, slashing .223/.348/.375.

Awesome pick up for the fish. Best of luck!!!!! He is awesome!
weezer17
How is he awesome? The only thing the bum is good at hitting is the Gatorade cooler. He is a worthless player that threatened to “fu*king kill” cubs players after Jake Arietta was hit by a pitch. Marlins are the joke of the MLB.
angt222
Strong fit for MIA
crumpy24
I guess Marlins fans aren’t entitled, oh wait there barely any.
bravesfan
Lol. There are more actual marlin (fish) that are fans of the Marlins baseball team than there are human fans…. it’s a fact… look it up
dannyd2210
Damn… you really need to work on your jokes. Kind of pathetic.
Brandon kosnik
There are more Native Americans than actual Braves fans… oh sorry not anymore. Be ashamed pal.
OofAndYikes
Imagine getting this shook about a 34 year old utility man who’s not even good. Good Sixers game last night btw!
crumpy24
I’m one of the few Phillies fans that actually appreciated his service in Philly. He hit lefties decently and played 8 positions.

This is one guy I’m always curious to how he hangs around but others flame out and profiles as a better player
rememberthecoop
Haven’t seen him play much and haven’t checked Fangraphs, but I recall he had a terrific defensive rep when he first came up, didn’t he?
MarlinsFanBase
He must be good at networking, is a quality clubhouse guy, and he plays a bunch of positions and is athletically in good shape. He has family connected in the game in MiLB.
But from the Marlins standpoint, he’s also a local guy.

This was a move they should of done 5 yrs ago. but as a depth piece not bad.
Think they only had 2 infielder invite this spring

Nice spin.

DonC.
He’s an ass kisser surprised Gabe k didn’t sign him
DarkSide830
sadly i think the car crash ended his productive years. he looked solid off the start in Philly but mostly struggled.
MarlinsFanBase
This is really going to be an interesting Spring Training.
With all of the moves this offseason, I think the Marlins will be cutting some vets and may have a trade or two in them involving any guys that can’t make the team, but are out of options.
It’s good to know that the Marlins are getting back to a little thing that did well, that Loria tended to interfere with – creating competition to field the best team possible come Opening Day. Notice is out to guys like Lewis Brinson, Garrett Cooper, Jose Urena, and any others that aren’t performing or are routinely spending time on the IL. Perform and/or tough it out to stay on the field, or someone else will be playing.
Other than giving Matt Joyce a guaranteed MLB contract (should’ve been a MiLB deal), I’m loving this.
I do wonder, with Rodriguez going to be looked at, what are the Marlins’ plans with Jon Berti? You’ve got to think that he’s deserving of having all but earned a spot on the roster based on his solid rookie year performance (even as an older rookie).
bravesfan
Joyce is the better veteran hitter on the team by far lol…. I’m trying to think of the roster off the top of my head, but I’m confident they don’t have 3 other outfielders that are better than him. Especially if Anderson goes back to 3rd
MarlinsFanBase
Dickerson is a better hitter. Harold Ramirez had a very solid rookie season. Garrett Cooper will very likely be battling for an OF position instead of 1B. Villar will be rotating in and out of the OF.
How’s that for someone that doesn’t follow the game?
filthyrich
Boom, roasted!
PS:
You’re on the internet, you don’t have to think of the roster off the top of your head eh…
Double PS:
Marlins have more WS titles than Atlanta.
Roasted again.
MetsFan22
You know it’s bad when you think Harold Ramirez had a solid rookie year.
MarlinsFanBase
I’d take his year over Brandon Nimmo any day of the week and year.
Ramirez can hit his way onto base…not pray for a walk. Guess which one is more offensively effective against pitchers that throw strikes.
I know it’s difficult for you, as a Nimmo polisher, to understand the value of a guy that is effective when he swings the bat instead of the guy that keeps it on his shoulders.because he doesn’t do much if he does swing.
bravesfan
When you find a marlins fan, they clearly don’t follow the sport very much….
earmbrister
You must be so proud …
stretch123
MetsFan and BravesFan,
Since 1986, Mets and Braves have 2 combined World Series titles. Since Marlins came to existence in 1993, they have 2 championships.
Even through all the dysfunction the Marlins have had more success than the Mets and Braves combined… The results speak for themselves!
MetsFan22
Do you know the marlins also have division wins during that span?? Pathetic

Hide the Gatorade coolers
Moonlight Grahamcracker
I must have posted my comment about 3 seconds after yours, both thinking the same thing lol.
CubsWS2016
He sure did! Went 10 rounds. It was a draw. But it was easier than taking on Arrieta.
Moonlight Grahamcracker
Didn’t he fight a Gatorade cooler once?
Puxatony phil
Just hope he makes the Fish so we can booo the heck out of him. He’s got a big mouth and no bat to back it up
Deerslayer1
Yep,got tired of his snippy attitude fast in Philly, he sucked!

Eatdust666
He can still hit for power, but since that breakout season with Pittsburgh, he’s otherwise been useless.
bravesfan
Marlins keep making small, impactful good moves. Rather it’s filling in good starters, or find good bench pieces… I haven’t seen many bad moves by them this offseason (which is highly unusual as they generally make the worse moves and are the laughing stock of baseball). Even depth moves have been solid… I’m impressed overall. Went from an extremely bad team to a team that’s gonna give good teams fits every once in a while.
Deerslayer1
Thank God he won’t be back for the Phillies. He didn’t want to play for fans like me cause I’m entitled! I’m like most fans that work hard everyday to to enjoy a baseball game at night to unwind.
What an ass. Talk about entitled? He took valuable playing time from some prospects that could maybe show some talent.
Paperdyer
Sean’s choice of his words is what the issue is
He was trying to defend Rhys.
I’m also surprised Sean isn’t a Giant.
UKPhil
This move brings in some competition for Jon Berti. I expect Berti to keep his spot.
Vizionaire
when you are in a fight he will push you aside and fight.
Deerslayer1
What the Batboy?
MetsFan22
Might help them lose 104 instead of 105
stretch123
Mark my words, Marlins will win 75-80 games this year (puts them around 80-85 losses). Mets on the other hand, will lose 50% of their team again to injuries while paying Cespedes and Cano 60 million…
bresch32
I thought He’d go to the Giants since he and Kapler were joined at the hip. He’ll get booed heavily in Philadelphia.
joblo
He was joined at the hip (or artificial hip) with Clint Hurdle in Pittsburgh. Brown noser 100%.
tiredolddude
He’s a good guy and played with a lot of heart in Pittsburgh Wish him all the best
