The Red Sox don’t have a manager at the moment, but the person who lands the job will oversee a much different roster than the one previous skipper Alex Cora worked with in 2019. There’s no more Mookie Betts or David Price, both traded to the Dodgers on Tuesday. Nevertheless, the Red Sox have been working to find a replacement for Cora since his ouster a couple weeks ago.
Athletics quality control coach Mark Kotsay is among those to interview for the position, but it doesn’t appear he’ll get it. Kotsay’s out of the running for the job, Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. Along with Kotsay and Diamondbacks bench coach Luis Urueta (previously reported), the Red Sox have discussed their managerial role with two in-house possibilities in third base coach Carlos Febles and bench coach Ron Roenicke, per Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com.
The 43-year-old Febles, a former Royals second baseman, has been a coach with the Red Sox organization since 2007. The majority of his work has come at the minor league level, but he joined the MLB staff as a third base coach in advance of the 2018 season. Roenicke, meanwhile, has significant managerial experience under his belt at the sport’s highest level. Now 63, Roenicke oversaw the Brewers in parts of five seasons from 2011-15, during which they went 342-331 with one playoff appearance.
There are “likely” more names on Boston’s radar, Cotillo writes, though it’s safe to say that individual will be inheriting a worse roster than the team had entering Tuesday. The Red Sox acquired a pair of quality building blocks in outfielder Alex Verdugo and hard-throwing right-hander Brusdar Graterol, but it’ll be hard to make up for the losses of Betts and Price in the near term.
Carlos Febles would be worse than Bobby V..
Buck Showater is available. He’s a quality manager with a good track record.
Buck is the worst. He ruins young pitchers, he won’t draft gingers because “name 1 red headed superstar”, etc.
He doesn’t seem like a Chaim Bloom pick at all.
You’re right; Buck is not a yes man.
He won’t draft anyone, he’s not up for GM…
“Rusty” Staub y’all. Duh.
I liked Bobby valentine. He made no sense in Boston but he was great for the Mets
Might as well give the job to Tek for a year and see how he does. Us Sox fans don’t have much to lose for this year.
he said he’s not ready for the role yet, I’m hoping he’s the next manager after this new one they hire
Should have commented below you AJO. That’s part of why I want a Farrell type now. If the season results in another non playoff season, replacing whomever is signed will be obvious. Also why not have Tek sit in the dugout and learn?
I still say Farrell for this year.
John Farrell is a terrible manager. Farrell does not control the game, the game controls Farrell. I’d rather have no manager at all.
Why does everybody say “for this year” do you think Cora is coming back next year ???
And no Manager outside of Dusty Baker would sign a 1 year contract !
Because it’s incredibly hard to find a manager in February. You take someone for a year that can hold you over until next year when you can possibly recruit a guy from another team
Job is a little less attractive now. Pretty much destined to have a bad record when you take on a rebuild.
it’s hardly a rebuild
I for one am happy they at least got some young talent back for Betts, and really glad they shed Price, who never really was happy in Boston. You know who’s really glad Price is gone? Eckersley….
Betts was going to Free Agency anyways. If he wanted to stay in Boston, he could have worked out some extension. We should still contend for wild card spot. Never know what will happen.
Rebuild? Price was really more important for 2020 than Betts because without pitching they have no chance. That said, if both Sale and Eovaldi can avoid the IL, they should be a contender although certainly not the favorite for even a wild card. That said, how many believe even one, just either Sale or EovLdi can avoid time on the injured list?
Retool. Step back. Whatever you want to call it. They’re likely the third best team in the division and making no real push to get higher.
Push is for going forward. be it making another deal now or for 21. Team will spend. Since Mookie forced this, I now have no issues. Think about it. Once JDM opted in, what choice was there?
They were the third best team in the division last year with Betts and Price
Verdugo, Bogaerts, Devers, Martinez, and even Chavis with good progression can still be a buzzsaw to run through. Pitching will be rough if there is even one injury to a starter but there’s wild card hunt potential on this team. There’s also 5th in the East potential.
Dewey, none. Mookie was the only player they didnt have to pay down salary. The salary flex is like at least one more player.
Where do I submit my resume
McDonalds?
Just kidding
Tek doesn’t seem to want that, wish he would. Now that I’m grieving Mookie is gone(not Price), maybe they will bring bk the Brockstar!!!!!!!
I agree with you on missing Mookie and not Price. But I wonder who takes Price’s rotation spot?
Bringing Holt back would only cost about $4M. $3.5M with a $500k buyout on a $4M option for 2021.
With the $49M saved from moving Betts and Price, there is no reason to not..get it done.
It might help to have a manager in place by the end of this week at the latest since ST starts next week. Now that the big trade is completed, Bloom should devote all his time on choosing the next manager. Roenicke would be a solid choice at this late date.
Probably waiting to see who gets suspended and/or implicated in the investigation into the Red Sox cheating their way through the 2018 season.
Paging Bobby Valentine..
Mop up in aisle 12.
Price was to much for his age and I’m sure Evoldi and Sale will be fine if we get a majority of the old Sale back that would be good obviously don’t expect them to compete much this year pending any other signings or trades
Sale at $35m for the next five years? He’s yet to look good in September other than perhaps on Snapchat.
Friggin Sox will try to trade JBJ to the Pads now for Patino,Morejon, Weathers and Abrams but the Pads have to agree to take on his whole contract.
Hey Sox, good chance one of the Pads you didnt trade for may end up an all-star or cy young winner.
Same cod be said about the ones the Bosox got in the deal
Roenicke? They’re considering Roenicke? I hope that’s a joke.
They should hire a big fella and replace trash cans with belly slaps
Jon Fishman is my vote 🙂
It depends on how much the Sox are sending to LA to cover Price’s contract, but I think they did well in getting Verdugo and Graterol.
Plus the Red Sox need to be careful with any internal candidates that worked with Cora over the past couple of years.
Sox missed on Dusty. Character guy on a one year deal – missed opportunity. Dusty has exactly the presence the Sox require.
tony la russa
My vet pick would be Showalter, up-comer pick would be Matt Quatraro, and inexperienced goes to Mike Lowell or Chase Utley.
lower payroll lower ticket prices
bring back bobby v
Who cares at this point
This seems like a good deal for Boston. Betts reportedly turned down a $300 million offer – which is a joke, as he’s not a $300 million player – and Price is way overpriced, plus they received 2 talented players in return.
As a Yankee fan, I was hoping they had to give those 2 guys away for low-level prospects for salary relief, but they really aren’t that much worse off on the field after this trade. Nice move by Chaim.
Sorry I disagree Carlos Febles has my vote for now… would love Tek and think he would be great. This team still has a tough batting order, please just give me some starting pitching !
Varietek managing makes me think of old catcher who became manager in Major League 2 lol
I would think Bloom hires a saber manager who has no managerial experience.
Idk but I think Boston might lean towards a new manager that will be expendable after 2-3 years if they complete a soft rebuild of sorts.
It’s a perfect time to think outside the box and go with Dustin Pedroia. You know it’s true.
What the Red Sox really need is Ozzie Guillen. He has the experience and knows how to manage a winning baseball team.
Perhaps Lou Brown will quit his job at Tire World again and manage the Sox 🙂
