Mets corner infielder/outfielder J.D. Davis is heading in for an MRI today after suffering a shoulder injury yesterday, as Mike Puma of the New York Post reports (Twitter links). He was pulled from the club’s spring contest after diving for a groundball.
It’d be presumptuous even to speculate as to the possible outcomes here. The initial word is simply that Davis “jammed” the shoulder on the play. An examination from the Tigers’ team physician indicated a lack of damage to the labrum or rotator cuff.
If that all holds up following the more detailed examination, it’d represent good news for the Mets. The club has been snakebitten at times in recent years by injuries — especially to shoulders, it seems (Michael Conforto, Jeurys Familia, Matt Harvey, David Wright).
Davis was injured while playing at third base, but it seems he’s lined up at present to spend more of his time in left field. That flexibility is particularly useful for the Mets as they wait to see what they’ll get from players such as Yoenis Cespedes and Jed Lowrie. While Davis didn’t grade well at either position last year, the club will feel just fine putting him on the field if he can hit at anything approaching his 2019 levels (.307/.369/.527).

Please let it come back clean. The drop off from Davis to Nunez is huge

I mean Nunez makes the team if Davis is out
MetsFan22
Oh yeah.. but I wouldn’t worry he won’t get many at bats
Rsox
Nunez makes the team as long as a Lowrie is wearing a knee brace. An injury to Davis would allow the Mets to carry both Dom Smith and Matt Adams for a little while.
VonPurpleHayes
Hoping and thinking he’s fine, but the Mets outfield is luckily pretty deep.
takeitback
Wait, so people actually want a cheater on their team? I’m confused. On all the Astros articles everyone makes it sound like they wouldn’t want any of the Astros that cheated in 2017.
VonPurpleHayes
I’m not a Mets fan. I just don’t want to see anyone hurt, even cheaters.
You do bring up an interesting fan dilemma though. It’s interesting that Davis seems forgiven. Perhaps because he wasn’t that great in 2017, but videos clearly showed him using the trashcan system.
davidk1979
Barely on the major league team in Houston and broke out with the Mets please buy a clue.
yogineely
I mean info showed he used the Astros system, lied about it to the media (which who knows what mlb told players to say during the investigation), but his apology came out of nowhere and seemed heart felt. And that came from a dude playing 43 games. I’m pretty sure that’s all everyone wanted from altuve bregs and correa but still never got it. I thought was a classy move by JD, and I’m not even a mets fan
takeitback
@yogi Exactly. The data clearly showed he used the trash can system. How many games he played is irrelevant. I agree that Bregman’s apology left a lot to be desired, but Correa’s apology was sincere and remorseful. The next day he was defending Altuve, Reddick, and Kemp because they didn’t use the system, so he came across as defensive, but if you watch the whole interview he was only defensive about those three. He again took responsibility for himself and the others that used the system. As for Altuve, I’m not sure how sincere and heartfelt his apology can be, since he didn’t use the system. He’s probably pissed that his teammates actions have drug his name through the mud.
Either way, it’s interesting how people do mental gymnastics to forgive their current players, while still having anger towards the current Astros.
Take Cole for example. It is perfectly reasonable for Yankee fans to be excited about him joining their team since he wasn’t on the 2017 team that clearly cheated. But, Yankee fans think the Astros were cheating last year with buzzers, so that would make Cole an accomplice. Yankee fans can’t have it both ways. You can’t feel the Astros cheated for the past three years and hate the players on those teams, and then look the other way when you sign one of those players.
VonPurpleHayes
It’s just going to get more and more interesting in the yeara to come as 2017 Astros move on to other teams.
Endersgame
There is very good reason to believe that Altuve did not cheat. First off, his numbers were arguably better in 2016, with the same number of HRs in 2016 and 2017, and with more RBIs in 2016 than in 2017. Second, if you look at the website of the guy who investigated all of the banging, Altuve only had 24 trash can bangs all year, which equals less than 3% of his pitches. All of that seems to agree with Correa’s assertion that Altuve not only did not participate, but would get mad when his teammates would try to cheat for him.
cadagan
Altuve Only had 24 times? Also it’s one sign, so really 48+ times?
I dont get the logic of Altuve apologists. What is people’s idea of a cutoff that seems reasonable? For me, maybe once or twice. So hes yelling and deriding teammates 24-48+ times to get them to stop the banging? That sounds believable? Sounds more believable that, at the very least, he put up with it.
Endersgame
Maybe this will finally get the logic through your skull. The ONLY Astro from 2017 that had a lower percentage of trash can bangs was Tony Kemp, and that is because he had literally zero trash can bangs. Are you really telling me you have a harder time believing Altuve asked them to stop and they got so caught up in the cheating that they forgot Altuve didn’t want the bangs than that he was willfully participating when he NEVER had more than 2 trash can bangs in a single game, and only ever had those two bangs in 5 games?
I understand you are upset that the Astros cheated. The numbers are there, they clearly did. But for anyone looking at the actual facts, it is also very believable that Altuve didn’t want any part of it. And before you mention anything about 48+ times again, the guy who put in all of this work was very good at it, it was very clear Altuve only got the 24 bangs, period. Which, I repeat, is less than 3% of the pitches he saw that year.

Davis played in 42 games in 17 and 64 games in 18 for the Astros. And if he cheated he sucked at it cause his production isn’t what you’d expect from a guy who knows what pitch is coming.
17 he hit .226/.279/.484 in those 42 games
18 he hit .175/.248/.223 in those 64 games.
He either didn’t cheat, given his production I’d say Davis didn’t cheat as much as people seem to think, or did cheat but sucked at cheating.

maybe he blocked out the banging

Wait, so you are a 24 y.o. rookie, and you come up for your first chance in the show. you learn the most respected veterans and the front office have a system set up to steal signs. And you are telling me you’d blow the whole thing up? You’d take on the veterans and the front office, without any backup?
Good for you, man.
You’re better than I am.
VonPurpleHayes
You don’t have to blow it up, but you don’t have to use it, but I’m not judging either way. I just think the fan reaction player to player is interesting.
bqbombers
Were there younger players who refused to participate? Haven’t been following close enough to know.
timyanks
where was the mets physician?
ExileInLA 2
Doesn’t travel to all ST road games. Besides, could the Tigers MDs be any worse?
lowtalker1
Even though the Mets should have started a rebuild… I wonder how long this will continue until Brodie gets fired
G Vanlue
Mets almost made the playoffs last year, are projected as a possible playoff team again this year; they have some good pitchers and good young hitters- what is the argument for needing a rebuild?
VonPurpleHayes
I agree with G Vanlue. The 2nd wildcard makes almost every team a contender. And when you have a solid rotation like the Mets do, you can easily see them making the playoffs. Unfortunately for them, they play in what I believe is the hardest division in baseball.
MetsFan22
A rebuild lol.. all our good hitters are young and controllable and we have Degrom Syndergaard and stroman. Thank god you aren’t GM…
@DaOldDerbyBastard
You troll.
cecildawg
take it-back – You said the yankys could not have it both ways. Yeah they can. A lot of hoopla for Pride. They lack integrity. In other parts of this ol’ world and times they’d be called ‘PIGS’.
Then a ‘fan’ says i am jealous. He’d be right. Though only until i realize i dont want to be a fan of the Russians of baseball. If you live there I get it. (and yes i am troll)
