Fortunately, there hasn’t been much in the way of negative health news to this point of Spring Training. Let’s check in on a few issues that have arisen …
- Reds third baseman Eugenio Suarez is feeling both excitement and some trepidation as he nears readiness to test his recently tweaked shoulder, as Bobby Nightengale of the Cincinnati Enquirer reports. Indication remains that Suarez could conceivably be ready to roll on Opening Day. He says he’s getting his timing down even as he avoids throwing or swinging full-bore. But there are also some nerves as he prepares to ramp up. “Just a little bit because I know I have something there,” Suarez said when asked whether he’s nervous. “I don’t want to get hurt again. I have to be careful. We’ll see what happens.”
- After a disappointing 2019 season, the last thing Athletics outfielder Stephen Piscotty wants to deal with is another injury issue. Right now, the hope is that his oblique/rib cage problem isn’t going to represent a major limitation, as Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle reports. But Piscotty might be down for another week and it’s beginning to look like Opening Day readiness could be in doubt. That’d be a disappointment, of course, but it’s surely better than rushing back and ending up with a bigger problem.
- Neck tightness kept Pirates righty Chris Archer from making a scheduled outing today, as Rob Biertempfel of The Athletic was among those to report on Twitter. There hasn’t been a substantial update just yet, but there’s no reason to believe that this is more than a minor blip.
- It’s a similar situation in Indians’ camp, where righties Emmanuel Clase and Aaron Civale have been limited. As MLB.com’s Mandy Bell tweets, the former is dealing with lat discomfort and the latter a sore groin. While Clase is going to slow his build-up to let things calm down, Civale is preparing to throw a sim game.

It’s a Clase by Clase basis

Cricket … Cricket ….

It’s actually pronounced “class A” but I respect the effort

congrats on being cheap, Indians. now you have no starters. and people dislike the Cubs’ cheapness…

They still have Bieber, Plutko, Plesac, Clev is only going to miss a few weeks at most, and Carrasco is day-to-day.
That’s not even counting Jefry Rodriguez, Logan Allen, Tristen McKenzie, Sam Hentges.
If there’s something they have, it’s bulk amounts of pitching.

Hope they don’t rush Geno back too soon..

The neck tightness must come from the newfound freedom of movement after he cut those long dreadlocks. I mean, I envy the amount of hair but sheesh, how did he pitch with it
StPeteStingRays
Archer is a head case. Maybe it will be easier to get through to him now that all that hair is gone. Maybe Glasnow can give him some pointers?
Too soon??
Rsox
His neck is stiff because he hasn’t had a chance to crack it by watching balls go over the fence yet
tiredolddude
And in that vein, I’m willing to cut him some slack, as Searage is gone and with him, the idea of molding him as he thought a pitcher should be, as well. Glasnow, Morton, Cole—they all seemed to improve once they left
StPeteStingRays
Archer being a head case goes back to his days in Tampa Bay. Searage might not have helped, but he didn’t cause the preexisting problem. I was among the minority in thinking he was overrated. He couldn’t get out of his own way. He has always had a high ceiling…
tiredolddude
Cole was a guy that thought he could just blow the fastball by everyone when he was here. At 97 or 98 on the gun, he had his share of high points but too often, he paid dearly for that mentality. As you saw last year, he’s learned to pitch. Archer was in that same category last year, albeit without the heat. Don’t know if this was hardheadedness was or Searage’s love of heat but…
Saw him pitch a number of times with TB and never thought he warranted Glasnow, Meadows and Baz.
He’s seemed like a good guy since he’s arrived. Sure hope he can turn it around

Crazy trade. I still don’t understand how it happened. Maybe he taps into some of that ceiling potential this year. So far the trade makes the Pitt FO look inept.

Archer may or may not be a head case but no one is certainly looking towards Glasnow either for help in that regard.
And btw it’s not “Pitt” for the professional teams in town. Please. I beg of you. LOL. .

By the way Archer pitched & acted last year he could certainly use Glasnow as an example of how to get the hell back down to earth. I will take Glasnow’s record of 6-1 with era 1.78 over Archers 3-9 era 5.19 everyday.

The Pittsburgh Pirates own is tighter that two coats of paint!! He throws nickels around like manhole covers. He squeezes the ass on the buffalo Nickel.

With the Rays, Archer seemed an intelligent, low key guy but then he got arrogant after being traded seeing how everyone thought he would be the difference maker in Pittsburgh. Same thing happened to David Price. Went to Boston & became a big mouth thinking he was somebody. These two used to be humble guys but “fame” brought out their real characteristics. No respect here.

Sorry but I’m just not seeing this arrogance from Archer that you reference. He’s been soft spoken, thoughtful and stand up in his dealings with the media.
However I did see Glasnow repeatedly underperform in his opportunities here, at least some of which I’m sure has to be attributed to himself. Let’s see how he does beyond 12 starts last year. That’s all I’m saying. I wish him well.

I don’t know Archers history so I’m not disagreeing but I’m curious where that comes from? Is it his mound presence or attitude on the mound or is it more of an assumption from results?

Not exactly a big vote of confidence from Suarez
Matfactor2
Yeah… I hope it doesn’t turn out to be like Votto and his knee. When Votto injured his knee it seemed like he was scared to even walk after coming back.

Sounds like the Tribe may have to start the year with a 4-man rotation with Clevinger, Carrasco and Civale on the mend. Bieber, Plesac, Rodriguez and maybe even Logan Allen.
