FEBRUARY 18: Hughes would earn $1.5MM in the majors and has a March 18th opt-out opportunity, Bob Nightengale of USA Today tweets.
FEBRUARY 17: The Astros have signed right-handed reliever Jared Hughes to a minor league contract and invited him to Major League Spring Training, per Jake Kaplan of The Athletic (Twitter link). He’s repped by ISE Baseball.
Hughes, 34, pitched to a 4.04 ERA with 6.8 K/9, 3.4 BB/9, 1.64 HR/9 and a hefty 59.2 percent ground-ball rate in 71 1/3 innings between the Reds and Phillies in 2019. That ERA was his highest since way back in 2013, as Hughes has quietly racked up sharp bottom-line results for the Pirates, Brewers and Reds for much of the past decade.
From 2014-18, Hughes worked to a combined 2.41 ERA between those three NL Central foes. He totaled 329 innings in that time, but his lack of missed bats (5.8 K/9, 15.9 percent strikeout rate) seemingly limited his appeal. The Pirates released Hughes at the end of Spring Training in 2017, and after quickly signing with the Brewers, Hughes was non-tendered the following offseason. He posted nearly identical ERAs of 3.02 and 3.03 in each of the two seasons prior to being cut loose.
Hughes has never thrown particularly hard in the first place, but the 91.4 mph average on his sinker in 2019 was still a career-low. The spin on that sinker has been lower than virtually any other heater in the game (first percentile in ’18, second percentile in ’19), which is a good thing for sinkers (as opposed to with four-seamers, where a high spin rate is optimal). As such, it’s no surprise to see that Hughes has been a ground-ball machine throughout his career (61.5 percent). That should bode well for a team that boasts a quality group of defensive infielders in Alex Bregman, Carlos Correa, Jose Altuve and Yuli Gurriel. He’ll need to earn a spot in the bullpen first, of course, but there are enough inexperienced arms in the ’pen mix to think that Hughes will have a solid shot at making the club with a good spring effort.

….. to play the trash can
GothamNeedsMe
Not a Stros fan or condone what they did but these jokes are already getting old.

Then stop reading. Astros are trash, and people aren’t going to forget anytime soon.
shawn hemp
I bet his spin rate is better then ever
GothamNeedsMe
This guy wasn’t though. Is it fair to him? Nothing you can do about it, so quit complaining.
Rudy Zolteck
ok grandpa but “durr muh trash cans” just gets annoying after a while no matter what team you’re on, unless you just really like, I don’t know, Adam Sandler movies. His point wasn’t that they’re not trash it’s just that you don’t have to leave lame zingers on every post about the Astros. If you think that you’re some brave fighter against cheating by doing that then you need a hobby lol
shawn hemp
This boy “you know blah blah” has gotta be the biggest nerd on this site. I brought up the idea of the astros having to fight due to their baseball sins. And he cried for hours about how fighting is wrong and there’s no place for it in baseball. Gtfoh u mf chump. No one cares about ur pompous sissy opinion. Get up on ur high horse so I could slap ur lil @ss off it

You’re clearly not as “cleaver” as you think you are.

Astros are cheaters forever
Eatdust666
He probably increased his fastball velocity as well.
jkurk_22
No, but anyone that chooses to sign with the Astros any time soon knows what they’re getting themselves into. I wouldn’t touch that team with a 40 foot poll
Halo11Fan
Gotham…
Bonds and Clemens are getting around 60% of the Hall of Fame vote. And of course there are some, if not most, teams who don’t care if players have used PEDs. Most people don’t hold cheaters accountable,
Honestly, people should be making more noise. Because we don’t, we have the game that we deserve. Demanding better is what we can do about it.
Rudy Zolteck
I mean, this would be noble but even if it was true, Hughes is new to the Astros. Implying that he’s a cheater now is being a little harsh man.
Breezy
They cheated. Some folks are just reminding them every chance they can. Can’t say I disagree with it
goastros123
Making trash can jokes on Astros articles while not talking about the actual article is gonna go down the route of wearing skinny jeans and listening to dubstep: people are gonna do it to be edgy and cool.
stansfield123
It wasn’t a joke, it was a sarcastic comment. Sarcasm is not meant to make you laugh, it’s meant to mock, demean and all around express a refusal to take someone seriously, or to treat them with respect.
And it isn’t getting old. It’s the correct attitude to have. The Astros should not be starting the season on even footing with the other 29 teams, this year. It’s a disgrace that they are, and we should all disrupt any attempts to treat them as just another baseball team. Comments like the one above are an excellent way to do so. They take no effort, and achieve the goal perfectly.
Rudy Zolteck
That’s a really petty way of doing it and it’s not like we all forgot about the Astros but go off I guess
IronBallsMcGinty
The discussion is one thing but I agree the jokes are definitely wearing thin and lacking creativity. Unfortunately some will continue to beat the life out of them. I’m a White Sox fan and had to endure about a year of Machados family and friends jokes.
Rhino
Good lord man…eat a dick and move on!

If the Astros plan to distract from the indefensible cheaters on their team is to sign high character guys from the outside…
They couldn’t have gotten off to a better start.
Great guy. Decent pitcher.
craigmiller13
Really great guy and better pitcher than last year’s numbers show.
DockEllisDee
Agreed and agreed. Really liked him here during his time with the Reds. Hopefully he doesn’t have to deal with too much of the crap going on in Houston, though obviously he signed knowing he was entering a potentially difficult situation. Good luck to him!
Joeypower
MLB adjusted the roster to 26 so Houston can have the extra guy to play the trash can

Good one, Farva.

This didn’t deserve one comment, much less two. Shouldn’t you be sharing Minions meme on facebook or something

bluejays92
Is it fair to say that he’s one of the most underrated relievers of the past decade or so? Over 500 innings with an ERA of 2.88 is pretty impressive. He’s been a serious bargain considering that he’s only (relative to being a pro baseball player lol) made just less than 9.5 million dollars in his career.
lsujedi
Absolutely. And works well against the lefties Will Harris style, so a great fit.
greatgame 2
Career FIP of 4.11 shows how lucky he has been
Mendoza Line 215
Shows how little applicability FIP is for a large sample size even with relievers.
PiratesFan1981
I am a fellow Pirates fan and it’s nice to see Hughes still around. He won’t get many strike outs, but he will help keep balls in the park and give a chance for a DP when needed. I thought he was always underrated reliever and still believe he was one of the anchors in the pen for the Pirates during their successful seasons. I met him a few times and thought he was a real stand up, down to earth guy.
Mendoza Line 215
Good post and accurate on Hughes
HalosHeavenJJ
Wow. 60% ground ball rate with Simba, Fletcher, age Rendon begins him might’ve been nice.

Got to be tough for any FA going to Houston right now. It’s going to be a circus this year. At the same time, Houston is a contender, so that’s a plus.
larry48
I can see pitchers going to Houston cheaters, but not position players. But the big question did the Houston Cheaters bang the trash can for pitchers also.
TJECK109
Are you implying that they managed to crack the base coach signals as well?
MoRivera 1999
All depends on how much leverage/choice the player has for going elsewhere. Sometimes you take whatever deal comes your way.
Gwynning's Anal Lover
They should sign the cast of Stomp.
Chasingamymatt
wish him nothing but the best, always came across very well. No idea how he gets an minor L deal and SD gives Drew (who admittedly looked great as a RP) that contract…

Next Padre’s bad contract that no one will take.

Great another sign stealer! After all the cheating! How come the cheaters can still make transactions?
Rudy Zolteck
Then by your standards the Yankees and White Sox stole signs this past offseason when they signed Astros pitchers lol

I’m still a novice on this site.
Rosstradamus
Good Pickup…..Hughes uses a complex pitch-sign signaling system that the Astros ‘Codebreakers’ program just couldn’t crack….LOL Pile it on ALL YEAR LONG these scumbags deserve it, especially since the league did ZILCH to punish them! In fact, there will be more suspensions to pitchers who bean them on purpose than the players who actually cheated(likely for 3 years running too) HAAAAAAAA
Tom E. Snyder
If only you had all the facts you’d be a wise man instead of a wise ….

Astros are taking the brunt of the heat. Where is the disgust with the Yankees and Red Sox who were caught doing precisely the same thing? At least 8 of the 30 teams had sign stealing schemes associated with technology. Probably more. Baseball has been stealing signs for a hundred years. MLB put tech right next to the dugout and then didn’t expect anyone to use it? I agree this isn’t good for baseball but it was a widespread league problem that all the contenders participated in. And remember – by the commissioner’s report this had stopped within the 2018 season.
MoRivera 1999
Yankees were accused by Boston. They were investigated. The Commissioner found that the accusation had “no merit.” The NYY were fined for having a phone. No camera. No sign stealing.
Boston on the other hand was fined for stealing signs.
Can we please get this straight and learn to make the simple distinctions? Sheesh!
As for your claim of 8 of 30 teams stealing signs, please do share your wealth of non-existent evidence.
larry48
I can see pitchers going to Houston cheaters, but not position players. But the big question did the Houston Cheaters bang the trash can for pitchers also.
Darkside
Mike Trout just blasted the Astro players. The heavyweights of the game are now chiming in and delivering a knockout punch to the cheaters and their supporting fans.
Rudy Zolteck
… how?
Darkside
players never break rank, especially with the ever constant pressure of the Player’s union bearing down on them. Small fries saying something is one thing, when the best player in the game speaks, the volume is loud enough to hear in all quarters, the commissioner’s office, the office of the players union and the cheating players in Houston.
Rudy Zolteck
You mean that guy who plays for the Angels, who killed a guy? I get that he’s really good but he’s still a player. I think you’re looking too far into it.
Darkside
Come on, a really good player?
He is the face of the game.
Considering these guys may one day all play with each other, criticizing the lack of penalties for one of their own is unheard of.
Coming from Trout, it is a paper bull from the pope.
Mike is pretty much saying the teams will take matters into their own hands.
Rudy Zolteck
Even if he’s the best, still a player, is my point. Guys said the same things about PED users back in the day. They practically have to. It’s good to keep up appearances but you seem to be implying this will be what downs the Astros.
tiredolddude
I just want to know who he killed
Rudy Zolteck
I re-read that and I see what you mean.
“Opposing pitchers” is an acceptable answer though.
Darkside
I doubt the Astros will be able to pull off a deadline trade this season.
They will be pariahs around the league’
It is not the same as steroids.Steroids made players money, and it was an individual choice and even then they suspended players.
This cost players money. Two managers lost their jobs to the 2017 post season cheating. Pitchers went nuts thinking they were tipping pitchers, this was a concerted effort, to screw over other players, that stole from them accolades and titles and nothing happens to the cheaters.
Talk about the Black Sox scandal finally passing the baton, Shoeless Joe can finally leave the field of dreams and get away from the worst actor in hollywood.
Rudy Zolteck
Besides the whole drama queen movie thing at the end, steroids were indeed not individual, as the Mitchell Report showed us. Those dozens of players did not magically stumble on dealers on their own. It gives a competitive edge no matter the mechanism.
And you should already see with the way other teams are eager to scoop up Astros players that they are apparently not as offended by this as Mike Trout is.
MoRivera 1999
If your claim is true then the Astros player caught using PEDs yesterday must have come from a team of PED users since they cluster in herds as you suggest. Not intuitive to me. Drug users tend to be in small numbers in the shadows. Like Clemens convincing Pettite in Houston. People who are using suggest the drugs to others very selectively and often they are turned down. On a team of 25 players, even its heyday, PED use was a small fraction of the whole. Maybe 0-4 players. And that was most teams. But this notion that PEDs are marketed and dispensed en masse within a team is totally fabricated nutso fantasy. There were like 10 Yankees players mentioned in the Mitchell Report. Most of them were only on the team 1-3 years. At any particular time maybe 3-4 were on the team. Not all of them were doing PEDs every year they were on the team. Again, 0-4 players any given year is a reasonable estimate. Not a whole team of PED users as you suggest. Very different from having a whole team stealing signs. Still egregious, but a very different impact. Especially since all teams were doing PEDs at the time.
BobbyDynamite
it’s like how child abusers go out and loudly denounce child abusers. To the simpletons in society (and there are MANY), these pronouncements are taken as proof that the person issuing them couldn’t possibly ever abuse a child.
Trout and Markakis aren’t the only players concerned about what the discovery phase in the ongoing Astros lawsuits will turn up. 60+ interviews conducted by Manfred’s team turned up dirt on many players, not all of them Astros.
MoRivera 1999
“60+ interviews conducted by Manfred’s team turned up dirt on many players, not all of them Astros.”
Interesting how you have this inside information. Please do share and cite your sources from the actual Commissioner’s report, not some Astros reddit board. Enquiring minds want to know. Forgive me for saying this sounds like more wild, unfounded accusations by Astros fans to deflect attention from the Astros, but I’m open to being persuaded otherwise.
Rocket32
Darkside If you’re serious, yes the Astros will be able to pull off a trade deadline deal this year…if they make the best offer. No competent GM is gonna refuse to trade with them cause of this to make some moral point. If a deal with the Astros is best for their team they will do it.
Ironman_4life
Even when it’s all said and done and the dust settles there’s not very many baseball fans that would not take any of these players on their team
toooldtocare
I’ve followed the Houston baseball team(s) since their expansion year of 1962. I’m currently a Texas Rangers STH, bit still follow the Astros also. I am appalled by the sign stealing scandal, but in the big scheme of life, there are a lot more important life events for me to worry about than it. I have resisted commenting on this subject, but will just offer one bit of advice that was taught to me many years ago, “If they can live with it, I can live without it”. Baseball, after all is not the sport it was 50 years ago. I know many won’t take my advice to, Move On, but believe me, there are much greater things in life to be concerned about.
BFFLR
Like losing your job or $$$$$ in contract value because the guys you compete against are a bunch of cheating a-holes?
toooldtocare
Can you show empirical data that shows anyone lost $$$$ in contract value? Heck if that’s the case the Rangers shelled Gerrit Cole during a game last season….let’s see, don’t think he lost any $$$$$ in contract value. Guy form Blue Jays who is suing Astros for loss of $$$ is ridiculous. He only pitched a couple innings of one game against Astros. There is no MLB team that will release or send down a good pitcher due to one outing
MoRivera 1999
Two things. Cole is a pitcher. Pitchers are going to get a different look from position players in a sign stealing scandal. Second, Cole was not an Astro in 2017. Now many people suspect the Astros of stealing signs in 2018 and 2019, but 2017 is the main target and there were no doubt GM’s who considered that fact when acquiring a pitcher from the Astros.
sambino
The fact that the Crapstros can live with it is the problem they seem to not even care about what they’ve done.
619bird
I heard a documentary has been greenlit by HBO about the Astros cheating scandal called Bang The Can Slowly. DiNero and Michael Moriarty will narrate.
brassred66
Hughes is about as nice a guy with character as there is in baseball. I’m sure the Astros have signed him as much for his character as his stuff.

Depends on what other offers he got. Supposedly this was the best and better than others to make the hassle worth it. Who knows? Maybe he wasn’t thinking about the hassle at all. Maybe he didn’t get any other offers. Maybe he has family in the area. It could be any number of factors. Being involved in the scandal is only one factor and who knows how much an individual player looking for a job even thinks about it. Some may be oblivious.
Eatdust666
Shocking, an Astros MLBTR article that doesn’t even have one mention of cheating!
