A’s Acquire Burch Smith

By Anthony Franco | February 15, 2020 at 11:32am CDT

The A’s have acquired reliever Burch Smith from the Giants for cash considerations, the club announced (h/t to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle). Smith was designated for assignment by San Francisco earlier this week. As the A’s noted, this is the first swap involving an MLB player between the Bay Area rivals since 1990.

Smith, 29, hasn’t found much success at the MLB level. In 99.1 innings with the Royals, Brewers and Giants over the past two seasons, Smith has just a 6.61 ERA with an underwhelming combination of strikeouts (20.9%) and walks (11.6%). He has continued to find 40-man roster spots around the league, though, suggesting teams are holding out hope for better results.

To create roster space for Smith, Daniel Mengden was placed on the 60-day injured list, tweets Martín Gallegos of MLB.com. Mengden underwent elbow surgery earlier this week.

A’s have had success taking scrap heap and turning it into decent pieces.

Could be a good pen option.

They’re hoping and praying for the silk purse not the predicted sow’s ear, of course. But, this desperate gamblers way of doing business is no way to build a World Series winner, as has been the final result for our favorite team. Go A’s!

A mere depth piece, please dont over-analyze. He’s not going to see much MLB time unless he destroys at AAA and there’s injuries to all 10 guys in front of him.

One note to MLBTR, as asinine as it is: it’s the first player-for-player trade since 1990, as the Giants traded Adam Pettyjohn to the A’s for cash in 2004.

“As the A’s noted, this is the first swap involving an MLB player between the Bay Area rivals since 1990.”

      “MLB PLAYER”

Adam Pettyjohn had not pitched in the big leagues since 2001 and was not on the 40 man roster. You’re referencing a trade from 2004. I’m sure your local Community College has a course that would help!

Your reading comprehension skills are at an inner city public school 4th grade level… Please attempt to improve on this.

“Adam Pettyjohn had not pitched in the big leagues since 2001” is still a “MLB PLAYER”

It is you, who literally contradicted themselves here, who lacks basic reading comprehension skills. Yet you aggressively try and take me down by straight up lying about what a MLB Player means, which means “a player who has appeared in a MLB game”. Pettyjohn IS a MLB player no matter what.

Go back to the little kids table, the adults are talking here…

Strike four, I personally had issues with the use of “asinine” in your first post. Are you saying the trade was asinine? If you’re saying that suggesting the info you provided was trivial maybe the use of the word “trivial” would have been more appropriate.

Does any of this matter? 99% chance that smith is waived before the end of spring training. Where he will most likely be in AAA or playing in a foreign country. He may not even make it past 30 days on the team. You guys need baseball to start to argue over a player that nobody will remember in 6 months.

This wasn’t an argument about value of the move.

          @arc89

This is nothing to do with the trade, it has to do with the journalism.

          1990: player for player
          2004: player for cash
          2020: player for cash

“As the A’s noted, this is the first swap involving an MLB player between the Bay Area rivals since 1990.”

ironic, given how “petty” it is to simply not trade with another team, especially if they are in the other league

LMAO how did I miss that when replying to @AssumeFactsNotInEvidence?

        Here’s the rundown:

        1990: player for player
        2004: player for cash
        2020: player for cash

“As the A’s noted, this is the first swap involving an MLB player between the Bay Area rivals since 1990.”

No “MLB PLAYER”s, past or present, are safe here!

If you know anyone who played the game, literally anyone will argue over them!

Pettyjohn was kinda caught in the crossfire here though, it’s more about people who should know better not reporting facts correctly.

Smith has been very effective in the minors but unable to get anything close when moved up to majors. Even in the AAA last year he was very good and it seemed everyone was getting lit at that level. He is worth a February March look see.
