The White Sox have signed right-hander Bryan Mitchell to a minor league contract, The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter link).
Mitchell spent 2019 in the minors, after seeing at least a bit of MLB action in each of the previous five seasons. Even with the caveat that 2019 was the most hitter-friendly season in the history of Triple-A baseball, Mitchell’s results weren’t good, as he posted a 9.41 ERA, 7.0 K/9, and 5.7 BB/9 over 44 innings for the Padres’ Triple-A affiliate in El Paso.
Chicago represents a fresh start for Mitchell, who has shown flashes of promise of his short big league career but has yet to deliver consistent results over his time with the Padres and Yankees. San Diego acquired Mitchell in the 2017-18 offseason, as part of a trade that saw the Padres agree to absorb the remainder of Chase Headley’s contract as the price for getting a controllable young arm in Mitchell. The gambit didn’t work out for the Padres, as Mitchell had a 5.42 ERA over 73 frames (starting 11 of 16 games) for the club in 2018.

SD didn’t pan out, like it when they got him. hope he figures it out with the sox
lowtalker1
No one liked the trade for in San Diego
Dude is trash
SDHotDawg
Good luck with Mitchell. You’ll need it.
Russianblue35
He’s still around?
bbatardo
Watched him all year in 2018 with the Padres and control was always his biggest issue. He would look good at times, but then just walk back to back hitters and give up a few hits and before you knew it he had given up 3-4 runs.
zippytms
LOL good luck with that
hyraxwithaflamethrower
That WHIP is ridiculously high. Don’t really get this signing, unless Cooper has watched a lot of tape on him and thinks he can fix both his control issues and hittability, but that’s a tall order.

Prime candidate for Giolito’s meditation techniques.
Rallyshirt
I’m on the first tee and I hand him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one – big hitter, the Lama – long.
ChiSox_Fan
Well he is only 28. Soon to be 29.
Worth a try, I guess.
He can work with Coop, Farquhar, and the other pitching coaches. Get him back on track.
lowtalker1
Lol
He couldn’t even figure it out with two of the best in baseball
Dogbone
Ahhh yes, he will get to work with the great ‘Coop’. The great Coop is the one and same guy, who has been overseeing this team’s pitching staff for the last umteen years. Over the current 8 year ‘rebuild’.
Yet Sox fans buy into the ‘Coop’ hype. Gullible lap dogs.
Jim Carter
Do you write “8 year rebuild” every day? Get a life!
Paulie0514
Dogboner has templates on what to post on here, that’s why he’s repetitive

Haha

I agree with this Coop mumbo-jumbo.
Many pitchers display horrible fundamentals on the Sox.
Cooper is no miracle worker.
He must have photos on Jerry.
The same pics that keeps Kenny in the Executive suite.
The current salary total is $122 million.
Still cheap.
And Sox fans are again lining up for a major disappointment.
Jerry, spend some real money and sign some real relievers
You are 83.
Change your depends, call the bank and spend some cash.
Surly
Coop dog comes across like a used car salesman… nothing he says is of any real importance. The Sox should go after Luhnow and then Strom. I would double Luhnow’s wages in 2021 to make up for the leagues decision to make him the fall guy for the actual cheaters.
ChiSoxCity
I find it hilarious that two lousy championships in 114 years gives cvbs fan the nerve to call another fanbase “gullible lap dogs”. The irony is beautiful.
IronBallsMcGinty
Some of them are just bitter because the last time the Sox went to the WS they got it done in four games capping off an 11 and 1 post season run. It took the cubs seven games (which was almost lost in the end) to win. Not to mention being shut out twice.
mike127
ChiSox—-we (Cubs folk) find it hilarious that it’s actually THREE lousy championships in 113 years for the Cubs. You actually need to go back to that 114th year for the Sox third championship (albeit at the Cubs expense). Where irony is beautiful, so is ignorance. Please, never let facts get in the way of a good troll. Most readers on here are clueless and will believe anything that is typed.
wordonthestreet
Oh they “almost lost” so the championship does not count? Typical White Sox fan envious of all things Cub.
Cubs had what 5 million at the celebration. Sox had 500,000 maybe. Hahaha. Boy that makes your blood boil
hyraxwithaflamethrower
@mike127, well that one extra year makes all the difference, doesn’t it?
hyraxwithaflamethrower
@wordonthestreet And you sound like the typical bitter Cubs fan angry that their window’s closing while the White Sox’ window is opening. Guess that makes your blood boil. It goes both ways.
fwiw, I count the Cubs as my second-favorite team. Wish more Chicago baseball fans could do similarly. I was honestly almost as excited about them winning it all as I was back in 2005 when the Sox did. Chicago’s a great city, fortunate enough to have two teams. What good does hating the other team do?

Coop and the Sox pitching staff have helped turn around a lot of famous pitchers.
If you’re saying Coop has no track record of reclamation project pitchers turning into serviceable or even high quality guys you just sound ignorant.
Quintana was a waiver claim from the Yankees and went on to put up top ten in baseball WAR over the next 5 years.
Kahnle was released from the Yankees and we later were able to trade him back to them for a first round prospect. Swarzak was a minor league signing.
Just last year Evan Marshall was a minor league signing and put up top 50 relievers in baseball numbers for the Sox, Josh Osich was a scrap heap signing who put up league average numbers, and Jimmy Cordero was a reclamation project who is showing high leverage setup man quality stuff.
That’s three decent success stories for Coop just from 2019.

The Sox do *a lot* of things badly. But this is one of the things they do really well.

Yall should sign Chase Headly too
CrikesAlready
He had a bad attitude with nice, courteous fans and some press made comments about his ‘tude. To think the Padres took on Chase Headcase’s contract for him… Total fail!
He did nothing in the field to deserve the admiration of AJ Preller… Makes me wonder.
Good riddance!
msqboxer
You need batting practice pitchers in Spring Training….he seems to be one of the best available!
DakotaJoe
He was a great special teams player with the Redskins!
Comrade Tipsy McStagger
Does anyone know if Chase Headley officially retired? I want to sign him up for my beer league. He’d be perfect.

If the Sox want to go dumpster diving they should look at the Dodgers latest RELEASE Casey Sadler. Right Handed Pitcher, 6’3″ 215lbs, making league minimum.
Sadler, whom they acquired from the Rays last July. In terms of bottom-line results, though, Sadler was quite effective with both teams in 2019. The 29-year-old put up a stingy 2.14 ERA over 46 1/3 innings between the clubs, also notching a terrific 51.8 percent groundball rate and walking only 2.53 batters per nine.
Sadler also posted a career-high 95 mph average fastball velocity in the majors last season, but he barely struck out six hitters per nine. He also managed a bel0w-average 9.1 percent swinging-strike rate, and ERA indicators such as FIP (4.38), xFIP (4.78) and SIERA (4.58) weren’t high on his work.
Last year may have been a mixed bag at the MLB level for Sadler, but there’s no disputing that he was a standout in the minors. Sadler worked 38 2/3 innings innings in Triple-A ball and recorded a 3.26 ERA with 12.3 K/9 against just 1.4 BB/9. That performance, not to mention Sadler’s run prevention in the majors last season, may put him on other teams’ radars. However, the fact that Sadler’s out of minor league options could work against him.

‘Cooper is no miracle worker.’
Please name one pitching coach who is.
NYY thought enough of Cooper to open their vast vaults and offer a dumptruck full of money for him to move east. Coop chose loyalty over cash.

I know you writers have jobs to do, and I do appreciate your work. Compared to much of the drivel on MLB.com, FoxSports, and CBS Sportsline, the articles on MLBTR look like Pulitzer Prize winning masterpieces. So, thank you MLBTR writers for your work.
If I would have a chief complaint on here, it’s these meaningless dumpster dive transactions. More specifically, writing these transactions as feature articles. Maybe lump all these dumpster dives (or whatever you want to label them) into a weekly article. I know, I carry no clout whatsoever on this website, but it’s just a suggestion to ponder.
My reasoning is most of the posts on these dumpster dives are trolling posts. It’s like Pavlov’s dog, a dumpster dive transaction gets a write-up, and the trolls come en masse with their same lame jokes. The only thing funny about their weak attempt at humor is that they think what they post is actually funny.
Despite my beef about these dumpster dive articles, keep up the good work. After reading the garbage other websites pass off as journalism, it’s refreshing to read many of these articles, even if I don’t always agree with the commentary.
maximumvelocity
I appreciate it. I like to know about everyone in system.
It’s not their fault trolls post.
And the team has had some success with budget relievers. It won’t be this guy, but i appreciate the posts.
Idioms for Idiots
@maximumvelocity
So do I, but I think lumping all these dumpster dives into a weekly article giving a smaller synopsis (or even adding a link to each one where one can’t comment on that specific link) will cut down on the meaningless troll posts. You’re going to get your troll posts (and you’re right, it’s not the writer’s fault), but when the majority of the posts are troll posts, it takes away from the article. It’s hard to talk shop when the trolls take over that specific message board.
hyraxwithaflamethrower
I agree. I don’t really need a full article on any minor league signings with an invitation to spring training; maybe if it’s for a former superstar like Felix Hernandez, ok, but other than that, no.
As for the trolls, they’re everywhere and every team has them. I think they’d just unleash more trollery on the other articles.
